suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, Cold Mountain has got the SHAFT!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

And Whale Rider girl edging out Johansson... a whole evening of shocks and spills ahead!

*has not seen any of the films nominated at all

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay! Johnny Depp! He's not going to win though is he?

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It's gotta be Johnny Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean, he was genius in that!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Gah, 'City of God' yawn. I've hardly seen any of them, so by default good luck Sofia, no hard feelings.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

City Of God has five nominations, I think.

None of them for Best Foreign Language Film, though. Hmm.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Also - Best Animated Feature - Nemo vs. Belleville FITE!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't seen any of the 'female actress' nomination films.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Naomi Watts is just going to be nominated for best (/supporting) actress for the rest of her natural life, isn't she?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, the City of God nominations were COMPLETELY unexpected. If ANY progosticator anywhere was betting on those, they're now millionaires.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Also In America showed better than expected, considering I only figured it for a screenplay nod.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Belleville Rendezvous for best song, surely!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, I wanna see 'Barbarian Invasions'

MUSIC (SONG)
"Into the West" - THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
"A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" - A MIGHTY WIND
"Scarlet Tide" - COLD MOUNTAIN
"The Triplets of Belleville" - THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE
"You Will Be My Ain True Love" - COLD MOUNTAIN

'Scarlet Tide' -- old skool euphemism corner. What terrible titles.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny with all the talk of Evan Rachel Wood potentially becoming the youngest Best Actress nominee in history, Keisha Castle-Hughes now holds that distinction.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just looking forward to seeing Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara perform "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" on the telecast!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Why didn't Monster get a makeup nomination???

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

lost in translation is going to clean house. johnny depp will win. a sympathy oscar. same with renee.

doomified, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

LOTR is still going to clean house, I'm afraid. Depp's chances are slim (it's between Penn and Murray), but Renee's are very good.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, going with the 'rubbing Cruise's face in it' theory, your new Best Supporting Actor... Mr Ken Watanabe.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Basically - Master & Commander & Seabiscuit are getting rinsed, are they not?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

lotr is too much of a special f/x movie to clean house.

doomified, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

thing is, most of the Categories LOTR is up for are special effects/visual arts categories. The only category it's in where it is a big outsider is Adapted Screenplay, from what I can see...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Master and Commander got the second-largest number of nominations, though most of them are in techy stuff where it'll be trounced by LOTR.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i doubt lotr will kick arse. they had the chance with the first round. by the third round its nothing new.

dooomified, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, fuck it - Mystic River to come up on the rails and take everyone by surprise, with Marcia Gay Harden becoming the least-known double-Oscar winning actress ever.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone actually seen In America? Hopeless bilge, with Morton doing the usual deer/headlight acting-substitution.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i doubt lotr will kick arse.

Just keep telling yourself that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i think Marcia will win again and reckon she should too. Good to see somone else YAWN at City of God Enrique - i thought i was the only one.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Look, I hate to be pedantic about this, but there isn't a serious Oscar follower in the world who's not predicting LOTR to win Best Picture. I don't think the trilogy is old hat by now; in fact, many critics say that ROTK is the best of the three. And what's more, the thinking is that by showering it with Oscars this year, they're honoring the entire trilogy. The Golden Globes selected both the film for Best Picture and Peter Jackson for Best Director; I don't see the Oscars veering from that at all.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

A theory goes that giving the best picture to LOTR I/II would have forced the academy's hand the next year, and so now they can give III the best picture with no worries. I don't know if I beleive it.

Mystic River has the most nominations for the big six categories, doesn't it? Hardly a dark horse (or a film which didn't have "Gissa Oscar" all over it).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcia has a shot if there's a big backlash against Renee. Which is possible.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I adore MGH and am very glad she agreed to be in this Mystic Pizza prequel for all the acclaim an' that.

"A Kiss..." surely not even the best (=funniest) song in A Mighty Wind? But, yes, Eugene'n'Cath in front of a TV audience of trillions - or, better, Cath gets a cold, her sis Mary Margaret stands in.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Only Finding Nemo and Johnny Depp want me to stand up and go "Woohoo!" (Haven't seen Bellevilles) The rest is all a bit, whatever. Bill Murray deserves a prize, but I'd rather he'd gotten it for Quick Change.

The main crime is that Ian McKellen hasn't been nominated.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry if I was snippy above; I think I pay too much attention to the experts when it comes to the Oscars. I mean, if one of you had said yesterday, "I think Keisha Castle-Hughes will be nominated for Best Actress" or "City of God has a good shot at director, right?" I would've chuckled softly and shook my head.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

But here we are.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Talk about a split between the "big 3" branches (actors, directors, writers) and the techies. Up until I looked at the whole list of nods, I figured that Seabiscuit and Master & Commander had gotten the shaft. That is just not the case...

Well, In America didn't exactly pull the sweep I was guessing (Djimon Honsou is the single biggest "wha?" of the morning, and there were LOTS of those this morning), but I sort of always suspected that Cold Mountain's Oscar hopes were in deep trouble the moment it showed up on Rosenbaum's top 10 list.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Djimon Honsou is an incredible ham in a pretty racist role.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, remember when I said Hounsou was probably the 10th most likely candidate, and you said he wasn't even worth mentioning?

Still, I'd have to say Mereilles is the single biggest "wha?"

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

El Diablo Robotico will be happy to see that Basquiat Vance was nominated, at any rate.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Somewhat unexpectedly made sad-ified by the non-inclusion of the following in the following categories:

best picture - Finding Nemo
supporting actor - Sean Astin
cinematography - Return of the King

Although the inclusion of "A Kiss At the End of the Rainbow" in best song category lifts my spirits quite a bit. OMG if Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara kiss during the performance of this I'll totally cry all over again.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Sofia Coppola looked so weird at the Golden Globes - she was wearing flats!! Anyway, off the subject.

Mandee, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

rotk wasnt a movie so much as it was a computer animated gif that was very pretty to look it.

doomified, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

best racist film - Lost in Translation

Vacillating temp (Vacillating temp), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the japanese were laughing at bill murray didnt we establish that in the other thread? several clear shots of the japanese laughing at him throughout.

doomified, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

And they can't pronounce their R's!

LiquidTide (LiquidTide), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoa, you were more moved by Schneider than by Deschanel???

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Given E! news' patronizing reference to Peter Dinklage ("he's a 'little person'"), I won't be shocked if he's given some sort of Harold Russell-type award alongside the 'regular' awards...

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha jaymc, both Benicio Del Toro and Ben Kingsley have won Oscars!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I know that -- I'm just amazed that there are SIX non-white nominees in ONE YEAR.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I was only kidding about the non-Mitch'n'Mickey songs being worthier, Eric. "Flat-out puerile" is an interesting assessment.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, is it true, Dan, that you only clicked on this thread because at the end of the day, you do a search to see if Halle Berry was mentioned somewhere on ILX?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

*hides Ben and Jerry's tub*

No.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

He does that search first thing every morning instead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The funniest thing about the oscar nominations was looking at the aint it cool news messageboard postings about how the matrix movies were robbed.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

At the same time, though, it is kinda dumb how the Best Picture nominees rule the technical categories, too. I mean, was the sound in Seabiscuit really superior to the sound in The Matrix Revolutions? (NB: I haven't seen either.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

No American Splendor?

ModJ (ModJ), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Adapted Screenplay, dude!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

is this the first errol morris flick to get a nod?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, OK then

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

is this the first errol morris flick to get a nod?

Thin Blue Line got nominated, didn't it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

no, it was a big deal that it didn't. i though maybe mr. death did but then i realized if it had it surely woulda caused a big flap and i'da remembered. i haven't seen this yet, but my understanding is this is not mr. morris' finest work so to speak.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

no, it was a big deal that it didn't

Ah, okay -- sorta like Hoop Dreams and its similar snub?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

my guesses:

lotr:trotk
pete jackson
sean penn
charlize theron
tim robbins
renee fishface

next year look out for a you got served sweep

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I hadn't heard that much dissent on Fog of War, cinniblount, but I wouldn't be surprised. It occurs to me that if Bus 174 would've replaced Weather Underground, we'd be looking at possibly the most critic-friendly Oscar line-up in any category ever, basically. In fact, I bet it's still in the running for that particular distinction. Best Director in 1974 (Fosse, Polanski, Coppola, Cassavetes, Truffaut) is the only other category that comes to mind as even being close.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Even if only Coppola's is widely recognized as being one of his best films.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I the only one who thinks The Good Thief should have gotten an art direction/cinematography nomination at the least?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

No "City Girl" for best song?! travesty.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, you're right! *weeps*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I just read that, amazingly, Sofia Copploa is the first American Woman ever to be nominated for best director.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup. And only the third woman ever (Lina Wertmuller, 1976; Jane Campion, 1993).

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Oscar host Crystal pretends he's friends with Cool Guy Murray
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — A month before returning as host of the Academy Awards, Billy Crystal said he’s thrilled that his friend Bill Murray earned a best actor nomination.
“I’m so happy for him,” Crystal said. “He’s really stretched himself in the last three or four years.”
Murray was nominated for playing a washed-up actor in Tokyo in Lost in Translation. The role earned him a Golden Globe Award on Sunday.
Crystal was in Sarasota for a screening of his daughter Lindsay’s documentary My Uncle Berns, about his charismatic uncle, Bernhardt Crystal.
Crystal said he’s eager to host the show again after a three-year break, but said he still gets nervous.
“It’s a tough room,” he said with a grin.
Crystal also smiled when asked whether he’ll be dressed as a hobbit, a jockey or a sea captain in the style of some of the best-picture nominees, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Seabiscuit and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
“We’ve been working on possible ideas since November,” he told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. “It’s tough, because the Oscars are a month earlier this year.”

Huck Me Gently (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice revised headline there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

the real headline AP is running: Oscar host Crystal thrilled that friend Bill Murray got best actor nomination

Huck Me Gently (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"Whoa, you were more moved by Schneider than by Deschanel???"
i thought they were both freaking phenomenal, but when i typed that post i took into account that my HUGE crush on zooey might be influencing my opinion of her performance so paul got the upper hand.

Fell This Boy (Felcher), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

So, if Johnny Depp wins best actor, will he be the first Oscar-winning pirate?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

but when i typed that post i took into account that my HUGE crush on zooey might be influencing my opinion of her performance so paul got the upper hand.

Hahahaha, oh it's so true it hurts.

Although I will say that the scene where she tells Paul about her scar is one of the most amazing performances I've seen ever, crush or no.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(Am I getting annoying about this movie yet?)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

not at all. it's definitely one of my favorite movies ever (and ive only seen it once!). and i agree totally about the scar scene.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer Tracy, Captains Courageous in '37... well, he might not be a pirate per se.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

What I'm wondering is, if Depp wins, would it be the first actor in a not-exactly-a-"drama" film to take an Oscar?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

And also not-a-comedy or not-a-genre film that acts like a drama (The Goodbye Girl, The Silence of the Lambs), right?

I want to say Peter Finch in Network because the film and especially he in it were practically every bit as campy as PotC.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

won't it be the samething if bill murray wins?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

oh wait, maybe I don't understand the question!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The word I was grasping for was "camp" (thanks Eric). I just can't imagine such a campy (albeit amazingly so) performance in a film as openly not-taking-itself-too-seriously as Pirates... getting the nod from the Academy, whereas Bill Murray's role in the definitely-taking-itself-very-seriously Lost... seems a more likely go.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure that there have been more than a few 'non-serious' acting wins - see 'Cat Balou', like 900 other movies

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

See also Gwyneth Paltrow for "Shakespeare In Love".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i was gonna cite Shakespeare in Love, but I couldn't remember who it was who won for it. judi dench too, yeah?

marisa tomei! jack palance! yul brynner! Cher! and dozens more names!

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Mira Sorvino!

shockingly!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

seabiscuit was crap. master and commander was better than lord of the rings.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but Shakespeare in Love, Moonstruck, The King and I, and to some extent even City Slickers had the classic veneer of Oscar®-brand "class." Not so sure about Marisa Tomei, though. She might be a bit more in the Johnny Depp and Network camp I think.

(Speaking of camp, did anyone know that in 1981, Faye Dunaway was the Best Actress runner-up at the New York Film Critics' Circle for her immortal performance in Mommie Dearest? Oh that she would've won and gone on to an Oscar nomination! That year's eventual Oscar winner for Best Actress was somewhat campy though as well.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 29 January 2004 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I think comedic or campy performances are more common in the supporting categories, which is where Palance, Sorvino, and Tomei won. (I mean, just think of Chris Cooper in Adaptation, Martin Landau in Ed Wood, Dianne Wiest in Bullets Over Broadway, Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda, etc.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 29 January 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)
