I've the iMac with OS 10.2, and I feel weird in that I've never IMd or "done chat." How does one go about this assuming this setup?

Dean, does iChat require a .mac membership?

iChat looks nicer, but Fire connects to multiple instant messaging services (not just AOL Instant Messanger), including IRC and Jabber. Its a nice all-in solution:

iChat is more cheerful.

Hmmm...after recommending Fire, I started it for the first time in ages only to discover that it won't log into MSN or AIM accounts anymore. Apparently both AOL and Microsoft didn't like software made by a third party being able to access their IM networks and shut them out (voicing 'security concerns').

Sucky.

Try X-Chat Aqua for IRC; of all the Mac clients, it's the best IMHO. iChat is more than adequate for IM.
