TS: people who incessantly quote Tarantino vs. people who incessantly quote "Swingers"

I thought it was over, but then last night I heard someone outside my apartment discussing wanting a "royale with cheese" and giggling like he was cleverest lad in the land, and this afternoon I heard a guy tell his friend "you're so money and you don't even know it". Naturally I'm constructing a time machine to eliminate Tarantino and Favreau, maybe Hitler if I have the time. That aside, which is worse? or better...

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect the Tarantino quoters are more thick but more fun to be with.

As for the Scorcese quoters..

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I still quote Withnail every so often, god help me.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

But only Monty's lines.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

personally I would much rather hear "fuck you pay me" than "mmm that is one tasty burger!"

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard anyone quoting either since, like 1998.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Scorsese bah - add that to the words I can't get into my head properly.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

the bane of mid-late 90's parties and social gatherings

Kingfish Balzac (Kingfish), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I still type 'Scorcese' all the time. But generally I'm slagging him, so I guess it's good to be google-proof.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I hear Office Space quotes constantly, though.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: Fratboys vs Fratboys

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i've always been fond of "shut the fuck up fat man"

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

if you have ever lived in LA, there is a very funny moment in swingers where favreau gets a girl's # and all the guys peer over his shoulder to look at it, one of them asking "818?" and then he says "no, 213" and they all breathe a sigh of relief.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Does this mean I can't say, 'What the fuck are you carrying a gun for? What, in case somebody steps to you, Snoop Dogg?' anymore?

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I"M TEH RICKJAMMES BITCH

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll let you slide on that one luna

$Gear$ (Gear!), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Good, because I get to say it so rarely.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Monty Python and the Holy Grail quoters beat all of them.

Prude (Prude), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ni!"

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, Dan stole my line.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I think perhaps theater students who hang out in the dorm singing tunes from Rent and Godspell defeat even the mighty Python.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a roommate in university who adopted a completely new persona after renting Swingers. After watching the movie three times in a row, he disappeared for a couple of days, which was unusual since he rarely left the apartment.
When he returned, it was with a new Swingers-inspired wardrobe, a couple of bottles of expensive scotch, Honduran and Cuban cigars and a mini-humidor.
He adopted the movie's slang, which became extremely grating, and started to tag along with my friends and I when we went out. He went from hermit to faux-hipster in a matter of days.
I can remember one evening when we were heading to a local pub. "Isn't this great," he said. "The five of us are going out, just like the five guys in Swingers."
I moved out and never talked to him again.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear god.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha! Oh lord, I'm sorry. That's pretty funny, though.

Prude (Prude), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

haha wow

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

That's pretty sad.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Bruce was very wise to move out. Swingers and that retro swing revival it helped popularize were the worst thing to happen to popular culture after nu-metal, ska-punk (of the Goldfinger/Mighty Mighty Bosstones variety), and Michael Bay movies.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of the girls who took up swing-dancing and retro fashion were cute - can you say that about nu-metal or ska?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

yes.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

mall punx over sub-rockabilly EVERY TIME

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Just say no to Torrid/Hot Topic.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

torrid makes me say schwing

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

And I tend to schwing for the 'Topic, too.

Prude (Prude), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

endlessly quoters: Father Ted -> Tarantino -> Austin Powers

There are people who incessantly quote Swingers? WTF?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

why can't more people incessantly quote lord buckley?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Where does Kevin Smith fall? Above or below Austin Powers?

Indiana Jones quoters aren't so bad - "no time for love, Dr. Jones," "he chose poorly"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Swingers was shite. Pulp Fiction was good at the time, even if it hasn't aged well.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought "you're so money" was a SportsCenter-cum-hiphop invention.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Both sets of people are wankers. I, OTOH, am a double wanker, cos I occasionally quote Withnail lines without even noticing I'm doing it.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

After me & my friend made hardcore fun of a man who left a message on her machine telling her 'you're so money', whenever the word 'BOOYAH!' slipped from my mouth she would remind me that "booyah isn't a very money thing to say".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

They are all trumped in annoyingness by Lock Stock and Two Fucking Barrels quoters.

It's a deal. It's a steal, it's a sale of the SHUT UP! JUST SHUT UP!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Father Ted/Hal Hartley/Spike Jonze films in my area

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't worry, the Tarantino bit will soon pass.

From this thread:

funny/stupid things you've overheard said about music

(c) Jody Beth Rosen:

Non-musical funny/stupid thing heard on the subway last week. Teenage girl and teenage boy trying to get into her pants. They're deciding which movie to go see. They can't be any older than 16.
Boy: How 'bout Kill Bill?

Girl: What?

Boy: Kill Bill, the new one by Quentin Tarantino.

Girl: Quentin.... ??

Boy: Tarantino. He's a very important director.

Girl: Well I never heard of him.

Boy: . . .

Girl: Why is he so important?

Boy: I dunno, he's just like really, uh...

Girl: . . .

Boy: ...influential. Really? You've never heard of him?

Girl: What did he do?

Boy: Oh, lots of really important movies in the '90s. Have you ever seen Four Rooms?

Girl: *blank stare*

Boy: From Dusk Till Dawn?

Girl: *blank stare*

Boy: Well, Kill Bill is his new one.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

don't worry, Dave Chappelle will/has replaced this all as a source of quotes.

Kingfish Balzac (Kingfish), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

That's actually why I haven't watched his show -- I know I'd just get sick of it being imitated around me all the time (especially in the fall when I'll be teaching a freshman class again).

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, one of the most obnoxious people I have ever met made a point of going on and on at a party about how much he hated Swingers and all the people back home (he was from New York) who quoted and lived by it.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Did Swingers become a TV series or did I imagine that?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Worst: people quoting Monty Pythong vs. people quoting Austin Powers.

Infinetely cooler: people quoting Derek & Clive.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

There's quoting and there's quoting, as I have tried to explain before. I don't think quoting anything *in the wrong way* is good, no matter how 'cool' the thing one is quoting is. I think I'd rather people quoted Monty Python than Derek & Clive, in a way.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

do people still do this??
swingers seems like several lifetimes ago. tarantino fanboys are still going strong.

velko, Monday, 18 August 2008 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

this seems like a lame thing to get annoyed or worked up over

latebloomer, Monday, 18 August 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago)

ha, you got worked up about swingers upthread!

velko, Monday, 18 August 2008 02:20 (seventeen years ago)

that was a different guy

latebloomer, Monday, 18 August 2008 02:21 (seventeen years ago)

The only movies really worth quoting are Iron Giant and Grease 2.

Abbott, Monday, 18 August 2008 02:23 (seventeen years ago)

and Ghostbusters

Kerm, Monday, 18 August 2008 02:25 (seventeen years ago)

gf nipped my incessant quoting of Red's lines from Pineapple Express in the bud pretty quick smart :(

wilter, Monday, 18 August 2008 02:26 (seventeen years ago)

IRON GIANT: Choice quote is Hogarth's prayer: "And please stop...SATAN!...from...doing bad things?"

GREASE 2: "Being a man of mystery will get you very far!"

I will admit to have copping a few memes from Safe Men tho. :(

Abbott, Monday, 18 August 2008 02:27 (seventeen years ago)

I really only ever quote movies alone, to myself.

Abbott, Monday, 18 August 2008 02:27 (seventeen years ago)

SHAKE AND BAKE, BABY, SHAKE AND BAKE.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 18 August 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

CUZ I LIKE TO PARTY?

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 18 August 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

TS: Southpark Quotes.

Mordy, Monday, 18 August 2008 02:55 (seventeen years ago)

do not waste my MUTHAFUCKING TIME

Ste, Monday, 18 August 2008 09:31 (seventeen years ago)

and anything Robert Shaw says ever, but mainly in jaws

Ste, Monday, 18 August 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)

just want to bare witness here and thank god that i never quote anything, mostly because i can't remember anything.

strgn, Monday, 18 August 2008 09:39 (seventeen years ago)

I quoted "Three men & a baby" the other day. I lose ;_;
WTF is Swingers? I actually looked it up and still have no good idea. I guess it wasn't big in Norway. The swing-dancing revival didn't really happen here either.

Øystein, Monday, 18 August 2008 09:43 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe my current attempt at growing a beard is turning me into Tom Selleck.

Øystein, Monday, 18 August 2008 09:44 (seventeen years ago)

I've never heard of "Swingers" either, it must've not been a hit on this side of the world.

Tuomas, Monday, 18 August 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

The side of the world you are on is no side of the world.

strgn, Monday, 18 August 2008 09:58 (seventeen years ago)

Huh?

Tuomas, Monday, 18 August 2008 10:01 (seventeen years ago)

Huh?

strgn, Monday, 18 August 2008 10:02 (seventeen years ago)

I don't understand you.

Tuomas, Monday, 18 August 2008 10:05 (seventeen years ago)

I think Swingers is a States thing, i'm in uk and although Ive watched it nobody else i know has or knows about it.

Ste, Monday, 18 August 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

"d'ya foller?"

Ste, Monday, 18 August 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

I don't understand you.

strgn, Monday, 18 August 2008 10:26 (seventeen years ago)

But I love you, Tuomas.

strgn, Monday, 18 August 2008 10:26 (seventeen years ago)

I've seen one Tarantino movie and I've never seen Swingers, so I'm hoping this is just about people who have industry jobs in los angeles or who want(ed) to have industry jobs in los angeles in 2004, of whom i imagine gear has quit caring about and rightfully so.

strgn, Monday, 18 August 2008 10:30 (seventeen years ago)

I think much worse than Tarantino quoters are people who quote Monty Python, because they tend to be much more obsessive about it. A friend of mine once was in a party where two guys basically reenacted the whole of Holy Grail.

Tuomas, Monday, 18 August 2008 12:37 (seventeen years ago)

perhaps because monty python quoting involves lots of silly voices and is generally not as 'cool' as tarantino, or jaws, quotes.

Ste, Monday, 18 August 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

I think obsessively quoting any movie or TV series is pretty dorky, no matter how "cool" it is.

Tuomas, Monday, 18 August 2008 12:54 (seventeen years ago)

How "cool" the movie or TV series is, I mean.

Tuomas, Monday, 18 August 2008 12:55 (seventeen years ago)

but quoting jaws on a regular basis allows me to convey my deep admiration for the actors Rick Rob and Roy, and all things fishy.

Ste, Monday, 18 August 2008 13:03 (seventeen years ago)

"This was not a BOATING accident!"

Ste, Monday, 18 August 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

Monty Python's quoted heavily here too, probably because people feel less self-conscious about poor English pronunciation when they can really ham it up. I know I do. Quoting Pulp Fiction with a really heavy Norwegian accent and slight pauses between words = well... I imagine it'd be fantastic for you guys to listen to.

The film I remember being quoted most heavily when I was in high school was Eddie Murphy's "Raw", with some of the advanced guys going for "Delirious" material. I was no exception ;_;
My second year in college I met a guy who was still quoting that shit heavily, and suddenly it seemed really annoying to me. lolassholesophomoreøystein.

Øystein, Monday, 18 August 2008 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

i think bad santa is the only movie i ever really quote. or maybe it's just the way i fuckin talk.

will, Monday, 18 August 2008 13:23 (seventeen years ago)

I only quote ILX threads.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 18 August 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

my wife and I quote peep show a lot... this is probably less annoying in the US, where no one knows what we are talking about

repo man was a popular favorite for many years
