When there is very little left to eat and you make macaroni and cheese and realize there isn't any butter and things of that nature

So yeah, I was making macaroni and cheese only there wasn't any butter. I resorted to using I Cannot Believe Its Not Butter! out of a squeeze bottle. IT IS POISON. Way worse than Tuna Helper Tetrazini.

So I am slowly dying now. Please entertain me in my last moments on earth. (I have decided to listen to The Birthday Party to begin my slow descent into hell)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 17 April 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 17 April 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck yeah. You have to put like a third of a sticck in that bitch. Then some extra cheese if you got it.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 17 April 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i use butter and NO MILK!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 17 April 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm cool

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 17 April 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Does that make it really thick?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 17 April 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i find the "cheese" to be zingier

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 17 April 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok...

Aja (aja), Saturday, 17 April 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

and yeah it's a little dryer, but i prefer that to soupy milky mac & cheese

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 17 April 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

If I drink this entire 2 liter bottle of Squirt I might live.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 17 April 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, this is why you buy the Velveeta Shells n Cheese. Sauce packet. No butter needed. No milk needed. No disaster looming.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

And does the powdered-stuff-add-things-to-it brand come in bacon flavor? It damn well does not, no.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

BACON FLAVOUR!?!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

my friends have been pushing this health-food-store brand mac & cheese on me lately, i shall report back later with results.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

America's obsession with macaroni cheese continues to fascinate and traumatise me.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Tep I cannot afford the luxury of Velveeeta though I agree it is far more delicious and perhaps I should treat myself sometime.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm looking for a photograph of it (in the meantime, this is one of the first things I found while googling it, and no, it isn't work safe).

Everything about American food traumatizes you, Nick.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

wtf? deconstruction please?

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Weird, no luck on the photo. Sorry slutsky. But it's the regular Velveeta stuff, with a separate packet of bacon bits you mix in. Here instead is a very small photograph of the broccoli flavor:

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You are correct, Tep.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

America's obsession with macaroni cheese continues to fascinate and traumatise me.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Beans on toast rocks!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

it does not.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

it is the snow patrol of snacks.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

except browner and runnier.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not brown if you do it right.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Come on, Perry.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Why include the comma?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i had a chicken and nothing to baste her with. nothing short of a tragedy.

non-u, Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

until we rescued the day by sticking her on a vodka bottle and taking turns to be photographed with it.

non-u, Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

of course, it was all ruined again when a distant friend put her on his fist and proceeded to belabour my head. repeatedly.

non-u, Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It IS a food thread, Ned.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

is this butter stuff alright on toast then?

Ram, Saturday, 17 April 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Take a shit boys!
youve earned it!

Big Boss Man, Saturday, 17 April 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahhh, bachelors. Is there anything they can't do?

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

besides feed themselves properly?

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're making macaroni and cheese from scratch you don't need butter at all, just pasta and a couple different kinds of cheese. If you want to be fancy add prosciutto and bread crumbs. Cook the pasta, drain, put it in a casserole dish with layers of grated cheese and prosciutto. Scatter the bread crumbs on top and then put the whole works in a 375 degree oven and bake for 40-50 minutes.

FAR BETTER than any pre fab mix with butter shit

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone went through that the last time mac and cheese came up: it's like saying there's no point talking about In n Out, McDonald's, whatever, because you can make a better burger at home. It's true. It's just not actually useful.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

However, I can't make a burger in my car where is where Tommy's, the Apple Pan, etc. comes in handy.

Making mac and cheese generally requires a kitchen and end product if far more rewarding (and avoids all this stupid food trauma) if you make it from scratch.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, this is why you buy the Velveeta Shells n Cheese. Sauce packet. No butter needed. No milk needed. No disaster looming.

EXACTLY.

My oven has cobwebs inside. I don't do the cook thing.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're making macaroni and cheese from scratch you don't need butter at all

yes you do! i make my sauce w/ butter, milk, flour, and cheese (w/ nutmeg, tabasco, and salt to taste) and i use a small amount of melted butter for the bread crumb mixture as well. 5 tablespoons of butter in all (more if you grease the pan).

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

it comes out really fluffy and not that greasy. also the bread crumbs layered throughout soak up some of the grease.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Velveeta Shells & Cheese rocks. I cannot abide by the "look! it's orangey powder!" boxed mix thing that ends up giving you quite dire mac & cheese.

And stockholm cindy completely OTM about homemade mac & cheese.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 18 April 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I make mine with yogurt instead of milk/butter. When making the boxed kind, that is (Annie's for me, thanks). It comes out great!! Good texture.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 18 April 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine is very similar to Stockholm Cindy's, except without breadcrumbs or nutmeg. I may put some bacon or sausages in there as well. i.e. IT'S REAL FOOD AND NOT DISGUSTING ARTIFICIAL SLOP LIKE ALL YOU CRAZY AMERICANS SEEM TO DIG.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yes you do! i make my sauce w/ butter, milk, flour, and cheese (w/ nutmeg, tabasco, and salt to taste)

Aha! Probably why my mac and cheese is more casserole-like than traditional mac and cheese. I don't mind that at all though.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 18 April 2004 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

mustard powder is very important

Ed (dali), Sunday, 18 April 2004 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

how so?

But it takes 40-50 minutes just to bake!! In that time I'd already have eaten the entire thing of box mac n cheese and be in the 4th stage of grief for having done so.

FUCK BUTTER I USE THE MAYO NOW

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 19 August 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds like the title of a conceptual art exhibition involving lots of nudity.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Thursday, 19 August 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking of bachelors, every time i go past the pet supplies aisle in my local Target, I often wonder whether i should finally go all out and buy myself a dog bowl like Fry on futurama. im really fascinated by this idea. wonder if anyone's ever done it...

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I dont know about that Oops. Homemade stuff is CERTAINLY good, but its just a different animal from the boxed mac n cheese.
