so I have the opportunity to move to mexico for a year and work in a law firm (primarily translation work; spanish NOT a pre-requisite of appointment WTF?) and am wondering what it'd be like? would you recommend it? have you been to mexico etc?

Mayan AND Aztec history. What more could you ask for?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 7 June 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

you must know.

I'm serious.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 June 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Where abouts in Mexico. Its a bloody big country.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 7 June 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll get back to you.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't eat chicken from the American surfer shack on the beach at Puerto Escondido. Mexico City is amazing, as are los pyramides. I want to go back. Oaxaca is v nice. You travel a lot by bus, and get to feel like the extras in the end of the bus in the Italian job.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 7 June 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Boyler, we should talk re Mexico. It sounds like your trip had a very similar route to mine (Mexico City = Ace > Puebla > Oaxaca > Puerto Angel (about twenty mines from Escondido and nicer) then back to Oaxaca and Mexico City. I want to go back on the other side - Guadalahara & Copper Canyon.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 7 June 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I can help with Chiapas and Yucatan. And if you wish to know about Mayan architecture, I'm your man.

I saw a great crucifixion in Christobal de las Casas.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 7 June 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I went MC-Oxaca-Puerto Escondido and then back in a day (stopping off for a nice spaghetti in a groovy cafe in Oaxaca mentioned in the rough guide).

Here's a thread I started on the subject, printed out and took with me - it may explain why I followed in your footsteps (bus tracks?) Pete.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 7 June 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah yes, that would make eerie sense that our routes coincided so. I had the lxury of eleven more days than you mind.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I would love to go back to the north of Mexico. To Baja and Mexico City. Did you go to the canals in the south of Mexico City? That was part of the lake of Teotihuacan before Cortes bulldozed it.

Mexico's history is so fascinating.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The canals of Mexico city are amazing, just as sunset it is a bizarre otherworldly urban yet not kind of place (I thought they were Ballardian). The Diego Rivera murals in the Presidential palace in the BIGGEST SQUARE IN THE WORLD was grebt too. Plus the restaurant that kept giving us food for nothing was ace.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the pay is £270 pounds a month? that can't be right.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

You'll live like a lord!

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

so where is it???

teeny (teeny), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

mexico.

there is a guy already there from our law school whose contract is due to run out and the vacancy has been circulated round the law school's students. it says to e-mail him with any enquiries. I'm going to ask about accommodation, transport, visas, quality of living, etc. what else should I ask about? beasties?

£270 seems frightfully low. unless this is some sort of low cost of living / comparative thing.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

What out for conquistadors, you'll spot them by their pointy beards

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I am going to hit you cozen.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought that said, for a second, I remembered you are married, 'I am going to hit on you cozen'.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm only engaged! WHERE IN MEXICO?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know. I'll ask that too.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Might be a good start, Mexico is big.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

a man could lose himself

chris (chris), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

LOSE HIMSELF

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Tu eres en una situacion mala.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 June 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"A salary of Mexican Pesos $5,000 per month is paid" = £270 per mth.??

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 June 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

dude currency converters are all over the web.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 June 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I know. and I've tried those. but I can't believe that's what they mean.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 June 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, Mexico! I don't know anything about Mexico (but ask me about Cuba!) -- you should definitely go if you can, it seems like a pretty exciting way to use a law degree. But it won't be a patch on Glasgow.

¡Que tengas suerte!

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Tijuana FAP!!!!!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I was about to say.. working in Tijuana or La Ciudad Ju´rez is different than working in Mexicali, which in turn is MUCH different than working in Monterrey or Mexico City (or "D.F." as they say) which is also MUCH different than working in Cancun.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a friend from Mexico city. He ran away from there because he kept getting held up and mugged.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

seven years pass...

Seriously though, can anyone speak to living/working in Mexico City? How safe is it? How safe is it for women? Are there jobs? Is it fun? Would I need a car?
