Alaska to Kamchatka - I miss Risk

Anyone know where I can play Risk online? My sunday night Risk and joints gatherings have been discontinued due to my little band of merry men splitting up and I long to play my favourite game again - even if it is online against faceless opponents who won't take their turn to roll a joint.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Monday, 7 June 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

That sounds like the best night in EVER.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, Risk is a great game. We had adapted rules involving kill the person to your right, to your left, or capture 21 countries including either Japan or Madagascar (was it - off Africa, anyhow) and then sing a karaoke Freddie Fender song before capturing the 21st country (from his awful "Cajun Style" CD).

___ (___), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

My little box of plastic men and horses is gathering dust atop my wardobe. None of my current mates (squares) are interested in playing and flicking the pieces about myself just doesn't cut the mustard.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't played risk in months. i love risk. and i love weed. this sounds like a winning combination.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Aye they were good days. We'd all sit round on the floor round the board on a sunday night, the first one out would be on building detail for the rest of the night.

I'm going to have five kids and teach them to play. It's the only way. Then I'll be happy forever more.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I spent a winter in Holland playing every night all night. Then I tried it here in the States. Typical -- the US version is different. You get loads more armies and the mission is basically just to rule the whole world. In the Dutch version, the missions were much more subtle and tricky (occupy South America and Europe, for instance).

Maria D., Monday, 7 June 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's the version I played - you have your little card with the mission which you try to keep secret. The world domination one can take one hell of a time to get through.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Risk is rubbish. Real nerds play Diplomacy.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

There should so be an ILX PBEM diplomacy!

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Rumpy, I did exactly this last night. I also won! Eighteen countries with two on each. Get in!

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I never played RIsk, but you enthusiasm is making me want to go to ebay and get a copy.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I liked it. The person that introduced me to it when I was about 12 was just such a little asshole, and he didn't really explain the rules - he just kept telling me I lost the battles.. So I associate playing the game with having a total asshole for an opponent.. No, I have never liked Risk.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

So I guess nobody can tell me if I can play this online? What a travesty. I'm really craving a game too.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Vicar on point, but not just any Diplomacy. It has to be http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00001N2P0.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

As I understand it, the original version of Risk (my grandparents had it) was all just about world domination, like the 'American' version you hate. The mission cards were introduced later. It makes the game less interminable, but more unfair.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I have an old computer version of Risk which is great fun. I haven't been able to find Risk online though.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a programme called Isle Wars which is pretty similar. You can get a free download version.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Anna, I'll give it a try when I get home ;-)

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Are the mission cards visible to every player? Or do you show your mission when you complete it?

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

They are hidden.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless one of your opponents goes for a pee and everyone has a fly peek at their card. I've never done this...

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometimes my dog would wander into the room and step all over the board. You'd be rescuing wee guys from under furniture for weeks.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

am i the only person who doesn't like risk? it bores me senseless.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Seems to me that once one person gets a slight upper hand, then winning becomes inevitable. Whether I enjoy it or not depends a great deal on whether this person is me.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The worst/best thing about the mission cards is when someone draws a 'Destroy all armies of x colour' card. It becomes obvious fairly quickly that this is their mission and everyone laughs at them. Then if someone else finishes off that colour, the mission is automatically changed to capturing a certain number of countries, necessitating a complete change of straytegy. It's funny if it's not you.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

what is this mission card crap?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Where's the love for Axis & Allies?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Stratego - C/D?????????

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I recently sat in an "innovation" meeting which was led by a consulting group with a fairly similar name to Stratego. I had to refrain from making jokes about miners and spies and admirals and whatnot all freakin' day.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

a consulting group with a fairly similar name to Stratego

Strongo Consulting?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaha

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Stratego is classic.

Risk I find boring, but it depends on who you are playing w/.

I have never played w/these mythical 'mission cards'.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It becomes obvious fairly quickly that this is their mission and everyone laughs at them. Then if someone else finishes off that colour, the mission is automatically changed to capturing a certain number of countries

that's why most of the time you should instead go for the army that has the most borders with your actual enemy, to try and get them to finish off that army and unwittingly knacker themselves out, which is when you go for the jugular.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo consultington

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ken takes this far too seriously.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, trust me, that isn't taking it seriously.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to play with a bunch of computer science students studyng AI. They play the game as if they're doing maths.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stratego spies were always sharply dressed -- very James Bond, ie, they were OBVIOUSLY spies.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Lauren, you're not the only one. I hate Risk too.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

risk is sexy.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I know I shouldn't have told OKCupid I didn't like Risk.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Sex is risky.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon, that bear game looks awesome, how did you find it?

Tom, what is Colonial Diplomacy like?

I love board games.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Bear game Looks like a Ravensburger game of some sort. What about Samurai Swords? You get plastic ninjas! Up until last year I thought Stratego was set during the American Civil war. My childhood dreams were crushed when I realized it wasn't.
My guy friends all say mission cards are the weak way to play. I say pah.

Jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Colonial Diplomacy is a just like Diplomacy but set across Asia and a bit of north africa (as implid by the box)
