yes

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Waiting for the Powerbook version plus lots more spare cash.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

there are new revisions coming out soon, guranteed to be powerhouses.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, that might be a long wait from the stuff I hear re: power consumption

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, that might be a long wait from the stuff I hear re: power consumption

Precisely! (My G4 Cube is serving me perfectly well in the interim.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

You yuppie!!!!

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay me!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

there is one in the cube behind me. it scares me.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 7 June 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

They weren't making them in a laptop format when I was buying Pursey. :-(

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

DO not, buy now, wait untill after 28th June when new model are expected to be announced. How ever there are fabulous computers even pre update and now might be the time to pick up a bargain (if you can find one; stores are not getting any new stocks in at the moment)

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Patience is always a virtue with Macs -- as Ed says, older models go cheap, new models suddenly make you reconsider your options.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Are they updating the powerbook line???

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

not again surely?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i think they just updated ibooks and powerbooks?

but you never know.. jon did you order yours yet?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

www.macrumors.com has a buyers guide with information on what's due for an update

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't bought yet, waiting as long as possible

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm in the market too.. waiting

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't hold my breath for g5 laptop until jan/feb at the earliest. I'd say announce jan delivery march. I'd love to be worng though.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck it, I'm going to buy after june 28. they might bump some of the specs, but I really doubt a G5

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a refurb 887 powerbook g4 on the Apple site last night. Opinions?

Minion of Ozzy (fedo), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

it'll still be love love

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It was only $999

Minion of Ozzy (fedo), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

A G4 is fast enough to do realtime video mixing type stuff right?

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

how do you mean real time, and for that matter what do you mean by video mixing?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

if that 866 was a 12" then it's OK but it had the same motherboard as the equivalent iBook so a current model iBoook would be better.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

What I'd like to do is hook up one of those cinema displays to it when I'm home, and I think I need a PBook and not an ibook to do that.

Minion of Ozzy (fedo), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

supposedly both ibooks and powerbooks have the same video card that allows for dual display, but the ibook has a jumper that stops you from doing it. i believe you can make ibooks dual display capable though with some hax0ring.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, but I've thought about doing some kind of real time video stuff with noise / dance music crap

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html

This link looks helpful for hax0ring an iBook to do that.

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

thx

Minion of Ozzy (fedo), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but real time how? projecting video while altering the video in real time in addition to playing and altering music?

max out your RAM is all i can say

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm going for 768 megabytes of RAM when I'm said and done.

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

that seems to be the way. the 512MB chip from crucial is very affordable. the 1GB chip is NOT.

new line may have 4GB capacity though.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

G4 should be fine. If your talking live video for visuals. It's fine for edititing too, you just have to wait for rendering. Image/ine has been compiled for G4 so should be just fine, shame no one has done any devlopment on it for 2 and a half years. No idea what the alternatives are.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Live video/audio mixing? I'd recommend Max/MSP with Jitter.

And yeah, a G4 PB will be fine with sufficient RAM, and then some.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't hold my breath for g5 laptop until jan/feb at the earliest. I'd say announce jan delivery march. I'd love to be worng though.

I would wait until rev. B models of PowerBook G5s come out though. Just saying...

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

True.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I finally paid off my Apple/MBNA student loan thing. On the off chance that I'm dumb enough to buy anytime soon (not likely), am I going to notice much improvement over a G4/933 (w/ 1GB of RAM)?

I use Photoshop and a Vuescan/NikonScan utility quite a bit, iTunes constantly, I hope I'll have a reason to use FCP/FCPExpress in the next year or so.

I haven't noticed any dire need for an improvement yet, but if I do I want to trade in before my G4 becomes worthless on the used market and I could still get something for my Pentium4 laptop.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're going to wait until the "next, better model!!!" you are going to be waiting until Domesday. Wait a long enough time that your old computer no longer meets your needs, and buy the best you can afford - it will seem like the most powerful computer on earth by comparison! This is how Pursey feels to me, still, six months later.

(Though I'm getting spoiled. "What do you mean, I can't have Cubase, Reason, a Moog simulator all open at once, and then try to surf the web and answer email at the same time?")

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It's always worth waiting till after the end of january or june with Apple, if you are close to either, as that's when major new model announcements come.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but I'm talking in general.

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

New G5 line up announced: 1.8, 2.0, 2.5

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Gah. The Russian judge always marks low - it should have been at least a 2.1!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

holy ballz

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

SO I was wrong about release dates. I'd still wait till after the 28th to see what mr steve pulls out of the bag. General macrumors opinion on the new G5s: good but not an earthshattering upgrade, graphics cards are ancient and underspecced.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Liquid cooling on the 2.5 = step closer to G5 powerbooks?

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

liquid cooling in a powerbook would be sooooooooo xxxpensive

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yea, the power draw on the G5 is insane.

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it the G4 or the G5 that lost the either-endianness of the earlier processors.

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

can you re-word that question please

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I know what the question means but can't come up with the answer.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

thank god for new models at last. but liquid cooling???! WTF?!!111

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

End of next year for G5 laptops folx
