tell me about fort lauderdale. i have to know

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the worst places on earth.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not kidding.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Why, gareth? Why?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

this is what someone else says, but why? i find it intriguing

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been a few times. lots of american (and canadian) frat-boy types playing drinking games by pools. and i may be mixing this up with daytona, but i think people drive on the beach there, which is just crazy.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, a hell of a lot of canadians there during winter. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It IS intriguing, I guess, but make sure you go somewhere else, somewhere nice, in Florida to counterbalance it.

A large part of my family decamped there from manchester in the early 80s. It is full of expats, retired East Coast folk, and bored kids. Nice enough beach, but endless strip malls, condos, weird atmosphere, almost like some eternal leather-skinned swinger's party.

xpost yes, lots of frat boy assholes too.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I just have memories of going to visit my aunts and uncles there and watching my uncle Terry drink whiskey every morning and show me his gun, which he kept in my aunt's underwear drawer. I went to see a hockey game, though. that was good.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

HOCKEY DOES NOT BELONG IN FLORIDA
christ i'm bitter about the stanley cup final last night...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

This sounds incredible, like the sort of place where they don't bother enforcing the drink-drive ban and Poison are playing EVERY NIGHT!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

you can't get alejandro off your mind, can you?

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, so this is daytona, but pretty close:

having a lane for cars to drive up and down a beach is just wrong. this lane exists BETWEEN where you hang out on the beach and the water, btw, so you have to cross it to go swimming. it's usually driven on by loads of teenagers in pickups or lame attempts at lo-riders blaring crap music. god bless america.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

oops - there's no driving on ft lauderdale beaches. my mistake. i am an idiot.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

tell me about florida electro

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Booty Bass?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

a huge goth scene dowen there and the place for spring break kids to go vomit

kephm, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What, that rabbit in the moon DJ Icey electrobreaks shit? Jesus lord is there any worse techno on earth? It's like warmed-over SoCal breaks and the worst parts of trance, jesus god gareth please just start a thread about random street violence, these topics make me uncomfortable

NB if I had to visit a spot on the Atlantic coast of Florida I would go back to St. Augustine, everything tends to get worse with proximity to Miami in my experience (Miami = so bad it's like wow)

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Miami is great! (in parts)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Having never been, the parts of FL that pique my interest (most are:
1) Amelia Island and St. Augustine (and Cumberland Island, GA immediately to the north)
2) the Everglades and the Big Cypress preserve
3) Apalachicola
4) Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral
5) the Keys

I'm not sure I'd go to Ft. Lauderdale on purpose.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

gabbneb's #1 locations are all wonderful places as I recall.

Amelia Island is where I broke my nose the first time, jumping backwards into the condo swimming pool.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Florida mostly blows. St. Augustine is my favorite place I've been there.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Bad teen movies would be much poorer without Ft. Lauderdale.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

My family used to stay here

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

That looks like Gareth's kind of scene.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, maybe I would

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I was going to say that Miami/Palm Beach area is interesting at least for the old hotels (how many outside of Miami Beach?). That goes on the rest of my list with Daytona, Spring Training, and maybe the Ocala Natl Forest.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

can anyone give me some dining recommendations or anything else i should see while down there that isn't swarmed by spring break-ers? hanging out for a weekend with family and wondering where i can get some good Cuban food, for one. also found a killer tiki bar that i wanna check out. anything else?

mikebee (BATTAGS), Sunday, 1 March 2009 10:07 (seventeen years ago)
