I'm going to Bonnaroo and wanted to hear stories...where to go, where to eat, where to avoid...i've never seen the place but my friend checked it out and gave it thumbs up so hopefully i'm all set :) any advice would be great

Spinktor au de toilette (El Spinktor), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never been either, but say "hi" to my dad if you run into him while you're there. He's already got tickets and everything. He'll be up there with my sisters and one of my brothers.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

*mind boggles*

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend in Nashville is from Manchester TN, I'll ask if she knows anything. I suspect she'll probably just start haranguing me if I bring up the festival though.

Hey Spinks, tell these people I'm not lying about the psychic barber, while you're here:

what is the most any man should ever pay for a haircut?

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Water is expensiver than fuck.
You will be walking for like 72 hours straight so wear good shoes.
Do not for any reason whatsoever expose yourself to the music of Widespread Panic.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I will avoid Widespread at all costs, and hope to be in a deep coma the duration of "The Dead" set. Dave Matthews too. But its all about the 12am-3am sets with Primus, Danger Mouse, and Ween.

Spinktor au de toilette (El Spinktor), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot about Danger Mouse!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"Do not for any reason whatsoever expose yourself to the music of Widespread Panic."

My brother's fiancee was over at my house last week while I was hanging out w/my brother and our friends and she played some Widespread Panic, it was like "I can't say anything but I want to scream..."

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Widespread Panic makes me want to eat my own shit. With my hands.

Spinktor au de toilette (El Spinktor), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I would go out of my way for Taj Mahal, Del McCoury, Los Lobos (who can be great or boring live), Sam Bush, and Burning Spear (because I can see Ribot like any weekend). Then again, I've spent money to see Widespread Panic more than once, so ymmv.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

If Ribot sat in with Medeski, I'd definitely go to that.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

But that happens like every night on Norfolk Street . . .

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

For anyone interested the artist lineup is as such. I hate how they have all these fuckers I'd love to see playing sets against each other, but then give Dave Matthews Band an uncontested primetime slot. Fuck a bunch of that.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Doh, link fucked.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I had completely forgot that Femi Kuti was playing also!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

him too

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

*mind boggles*

It is relatively well-documented that my dad is cool, though my mind occasionally boggles as well. To be honest I'm not sure how he'll like a big music festival like bonnaroo, but he's all psyched about going.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Dead should be really good cept stupid Joan Osbourne is with them i think.

chaki_burger (chaki), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I should add as well that I'll be 30 in a couple months. My pops is definitely baby boomer age, though his interest in music has nothing to do with anything remotely resembling any kind of weird midlife crisis or whatever.

My mom would probably never be interested in attending something like that, but she is cool too.

I have the best parents ever.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

joan osbourne's good, for real, if you've seen her live you know.

i have no idea what this thread is about

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i wish i were going to this.

buy a lot of drugs. widespread panic sucks, but their fans have good drugs.

if possible, bring back a few sheets of acid for me. and a jar or two of keef?? cheap ounces of headdie nuggs???

omg.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude my friend is taking my mp3 player which has a built in mic/recorder and is going to record some shit for me! I told him to bring me back adequate chunks of Praxis', Femi Kuti's, and either David Byrne's or Medeski Martin and Wood's (depending on who he's at in that contested timeslot) sets. RADICAL.

Oh yeah JaXoN, it's just this thing.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The Dead should be really good cept stupid Joan Osbourne is with them i think.

Shut your fucking mouth. Joan Osborne or not.

Spinktor, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

They have designated recording areas for people to bootleg...no video though.

You are encouraged to bring a balloon to mark your campground...I got an inflatable goat from a gay-sex shop thats going to get filled with helium. And twine, but that was from Home Depot.

Spinktor, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha balloons! You may see some hippies chugging down some nitrous balloons while you're there, or as I've learned heard 'em call it "hippy crack".

"Fatty for $3, twofer for $5!"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

fewer things make me madder than parking lot hippies on nitrous. proportionate, huh?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

One time I watched this girl Candace chug down an entire balloon in one suck and see her friend Sarah across the road (which was gravel) who she apparently hadn't seen in awhile (as evidenced by her freakish gas-induced baritone yelp "SARUH I HAVN"T SEEN YOU IN FOREVAR"), stand up, waver (obviously she was to the point in the nitrous buzz where everything's all like CHEEOO CHEEOO CHEEOO cheeeooo cheeeeooooo cheeeeeeeeeeooooooo), attempt to run across the road into her friend Sarah's waiting-for-the-hugging arms, and plant her fucking face in the gravel. That was the most entertaining moment I ever witnessed at Glowwoods Campground.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

not like they can't fall and smack their head on the gravel just standing in place

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, nitrous = best to be lying down to start with. (I once, stupidly, wondered what it would be like to do a nitrous hit and put the Sex Pistols on full blast in the headphones. Waarrrgggghhhhlllll. Not recommended.)

I keep wanting to go to Bonnaroo and not doing it. Maybe next year. I know some of the people who put it on, and I have a lot of Tennessee friends who go and love it. The playground's supposed to be nice.

I would make it a point to see The Bad Plus, myself.

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, im off. Going to meet some friends in Virginia before the haul to Tennesseeeee. I'll make sure to remember parts of this hippie-ass stank music love fest. Think of me while im passed out puking in a crowd either at the stage watching Ween or Robert Randolph & the Family Band. Just depends on how mobile i am.

Spinktor, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

There are some time slot conflicts...help me decide:

Bob Dylan vs. Chris Robinson vs. Mike Doughty = ???

Wilco vs. Neko Case = ???

My Morning Jacket vs. Beth Orton = ???

Steve Winwood vs. Galactic vs. Jazz Mandolin Project = ???

Taj Mahal vs. Bad Plus = ???

David Byrne vs. Maroon 5 = (Joke)

Spinktor, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Doughty would be my bet but I'm not to familiar with CR
2. Neko Case
3. Beth Orton
4. Galactic
5. dunno, take spittle's recommendation and then if they suck you can justifiably hate him
6. ha ha

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Water is expensiver than fuck.

So, clean your teeth in fuck.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow...if I only could. I would save mad cheddar.

Spinktor, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oo, I didn't see Taj and Bad Plus in the same slot. That's tough. I personally would still go see the Bad Plus, but that's because I've seen Taj and I've never seen them. Maybe the first half of Taj and the second half of the Bad Plus, since I'm guessing the Plus guys heat up as the set progresses.

On the other ones:

1. Dylan (but then I'm a sucker, I never turn down Dylan even when I should)

2. Neko, although even a Wilco skeptic like myself has enjoyed them in concert

3. Beth Orton, fer sures

4. I've actually been told by several people that Steve Winwood's worth seeing these days, he's doing the whole Traffic-style epic groove thing (NB, only worth seeing if you like Traffic, which I do)

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Word...thanks all.

Im out.

Spinktor, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob Dylan vs. Chris Robinson vs. Mike Doughty = ???

??!!!$@&#(@)%*????!!!!!!!

Steve Winwood vs. Galactic vs. Jazz Mandolin Project = ???

I'd take the 3d over the 2d, easy.

Taj Mahal vs. Bad Plus = ???

Robert Christgau tells you not to die without hearing a certain song by Taj Mahal.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Bonnaroo was fucking insane. I will write up a pseudo review when I get the chance.

William Hung was there.

Fucking insanity. I have to be at work in < 3 hours, and i just got back from BF'ing Tennessee. Fuck.

Spinktor, Monday, 14 June 2004 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Friday's Lineup half-assed review

Calexico - This band started out my Bonnaroo experience, friday afternoon. The sound was great, and they played incredible...added bonus was that I met Pat Sansone and John Stirratt of Wilco while Calexico sound-checked.

Wilco - This was the only main stage act I intended to see, considering it was in a large barren field lacking anything resembling shade. It was a good mix of YHF material with a few new ones of the upcomping ghosts record and a couple off Summerteeth.

Gillian Welch & David Rawlings - Fucking incredible. They always do a great job...this time with a Townes VanZandt cover thrown in there. Funny thing was that this was during the String Cheese show which was about a 1/4 mile away, but it was still annoying. It really pissed me off when 'Revelator' was obscured by the SCI's obnoxious cover of 'Give it Away Now'. Wow, I really hate that fucking band.

Black Keys - The sound sucked and they werent loud enough. Plus dude shaved his beard. Dissapointing, Eh.

MOFRO - I didnt see it, but i heard them in the background talking shit. "You know what Bonnaroo means in chinese?...it means 'change your shirt, you stinky fucks'" I about shit my pants it was so funny.

Chris Robinson and R.L. Burnside - Oh, hell yeah.

X-Ecutioners - 4 dudes on turntables making serious noise. Good idea in the studio that just didnt work out live.

Danger Mouse - Jefferson Starship's "White Rabbit" with Wu-Tang's "CREAM"...."Fistfull of Dollars" with something dope....PJ Harvey w/ Naughty by Nature....Jay-Z w/ White Stripes....Amile soundtrack mixed into something incredibly beautiful....It was all amazing. Nice mouse outfit. The white kids loved it.

Ani DiFranco - Yeah right. Like I'd see that garbage...

Spinktor, Monday, 14 June 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Indie fuck.

Allyzay, Monday, 14 June 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

My Morning Jacket's show was by far the most amazing shit there...it was all while an evil storm was barreling into town, ripping down all the wind-netting, shooting shit 100 feet in the air. Incredible.

I thought I was going to be one of the only dudes there not intending to see the typical acts like Dave Matthews, SCI, The Dead, Vida Blue, Trey A, Govt Mule, etc...but I wasnt. I was blown away when a good couple thousand people sat through Gillian Welch's performance that she extended an hour into the main stage's act, Dave Matthews and Friends. People actually wanted to see her! Awesome.

Rumors were going at a tremendous rate regarding the last minute possible Phish show, considering 4 of them were there playing in their respective side projects...me? I didnt give a shit.

I blacked out saturday night at either the Primus or Ween show. I dont know which. I remember someone wearing a "HIV/AIDS" shirt, so it was probably Ween.

Spinktor, Monday, 14 June 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Indie fuck.

-- Allyzay (ga...), June 14th, 2004.

Maybe so, jerk.

I did almost have to kick this dude's ass for not getting out of my way to leave the campground. He just straight up refused. Someone on a horse convinced me not to hit him or pee on him...against my better judgement. This does however lead me to belive that everyone from Cleveland, Ohio is an asshole. Sorry...he ruined it for you all.

Fuck Cleveland.
