WHERE ARE THE FLYING CARS?

It is 2004. In 1983, politicians voted unanimously for flying cars by the year 2001. So where the fuck are they and where can I get one? It's that George Bush is what it is.

According to tomorrows world we should all be riding around in hovercraft by now! I'm still waiting!

will flying cars ever happen, and when?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a sort of breezy calum-esque nature to my earlier posts...

we were talking about this in the pub last night, skidmo' sez the 21st century doesn't start until he gets his personal jetpack...

When I was a kid, the future was all "we'll all be travelling in space rockets/flying cars/supersonic aircraft" and all that. My kids do not have that. and why?

Truth is, travel is getting slower, concorde is now not available even to very rich people, space travel is a thing of the past.

We are devolving, people.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

'Devolving'... I think more 'growing up' - focussing a bit less on sparkling impracticalities and a bit more on not-so-glitzy breakthroughs like cancer cures.

Anyway - HELLOOOO? PERSONAL HELIPACKS? THE ANTI-BEAR SUIT? Not to mention that glitzy phone tech. Not owning a mobile myself I'm constantly amazed by how much people nonchalantly pack into them now without even realising it. 'Let me call you back on my global-communicator-gameconsole-ipod-watch-pda-camera...'

I prescribe reading all of Warren Ellis's columns where he says something like 'I'm on a mountain in Kilimanjaro and sending in scripts on a computer no larger than a thimble while dialing into the global-weather-service on my own foot using a special sock etc etc etc'. That'll future you up more than you can stand!

We have made one pretty startling development in the last thirty years. And I'd rather be talking nonsense to you people than have a flying car.
