YOU put something in your hair every day don't you? Don't try to lie! Your hair is not "just like that" fool!

What do you put in your hair and why?

it's all in the drying.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

You blow dry RJG!?

Dan I., Wednesday, 9 June 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

That explains a lot, actually.

Dan I., Wednesday, 9 June 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I assume too much. Are there advanced towel techniques I am not privy to?

Dan I., Wednesday, 9 June 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i prefer kms flat out relaxing balm, but i've run out so right now i'm using kanebo sala strait milky water. i also use bumble & bumble gloss spray or citre shine mist.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

See cause I was looking at all those nasty hipsters on that one thread on ILM and even though they disgust me I envy their hair. Mine's usually like all fuzzy and stuff, unless I use this "straightener" that I just sort of randomly picked out and I think it might be intended for people who are not white as I am.

Dan I., Wednesday, 9 June 2004 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Which is just to say that I think there might be more effective products out there.

Dan I., Wednesday, 9 June 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

blow drying gives the speedy, satisfying styles when you have thick hair but, yeah, I have some top secret towelling techniques, in case I am caught short.

I have some jelly stuff that I use a little of, which reduces any fuzziness/keeps it together but not so it's hard/clumpy.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

smells nice, too.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I've said it before and it's not very original to begin with, in fact quite the opposite, but Murray's pomade is awesome. It's like the duct tape of hair products. Nu-Nile and others kinda do the same thing but there's an extra tacky/grabby quality in Murray's, some kind of DEEP STRUCTURE to it. My hair is super-dry and thick though, and just soaks it up; it might be overkill on thin/normal hair. (Fucking "thin/normal"!!! GRRRRR why does dry or coarse hair always equate to "damaged" on the side of the bottle??)

RJG I can't believe you just gave away your secrets!!?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Virtually all black women to thread.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 10 June 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

An ex-gf tried straightening my hair once... we didn't really leave it in long enough before using the finisher or whatever, so it didn't really work. I think I would have to use something extra strength with my curls though.

My hair stylist (fuck you) said that this would change my life:

Fresh Hair Cream

I dunno if it's changed my life but is indeed the best product I've ever used. It's like Diehl's only better (I've never used Diehl's, but that's what she said and she's a hair stylist so I believe her).

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 10 June 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

My hairs already straight but rather thin and frizzy. Use a straightening iron on it though, and its like WO. I look like I have a glossy geisha wig on.

Which is great, but you cant iron your hair all the time or you'd very quickly have no hair to speak of.

I dont use product all that often. If I use a good conditioner and careful blowdrying, my hair stays reasonably glossy and straight hanging.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 10 June 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

So far I am not sure if any of it actually works but have only tried straightening thing and mousse once. The "wax gel" stuff is UTTERLY peonic!

I found some Murray's Hair-Glo, with lanolin and coconut oil!! I just checked the Murray's site, however, and it's all the way at the "light" end of the scale, rather than the "heavy" end like Murray's original.. I fear my hair may overpower it.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I take back everything I said about everything!!!! The Hair-Glo stuff is the bizness! Shiny and luxurious. My god. I was so foolish in my youth. Although it'll probably stop working after awhile. Dennis Miller got off a line one time, one of the only lines I've ever remembered from him, about how you have to keep your hair off-balance, you have to fake it out.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 11 June 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

that's so true, but I cant see how it could rationally be so. It's the same with skin care products.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 11 June 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

In fact that's pretty much why I started this thread, cause like the stuff I had been using went from "working" to not working at all.

yeah I don't get that. it's so annoying.

I have a bunch of stuff, none of which has that appreciable an effect on the barnet (which is naturally 70s and there's nothing I can do about it even if I wanted to). However, this

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 11 June 2004 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha yeah - when I got my hair properly cut last year after doing it myself all one length for years, I didn't have a clue how to blow dry it or what products to use. So I bought some random things and had had small pots of strange goo hanging about ever since.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 11 June 2004 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand how some stuff that is actually sold in shops, is like rubbing a bag of chips on your head, who uses it???!

RJG (RJG), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't use any hair products. And I don't blow-dry. I wash it, condition it and then just let it dry. It's about six inches past my shoulders and has a lot of natural wave. It looks good I think. I don't obsess about it.

The only time I do anything to it is when I go out. I'll gently slick some Murray's over it to keep flyaways down. (spraying hair spray on my hands and doing the same also works.)

People with naturally curly hair stop me in my tracks. It's great to get your fingers caught up in.

six years pass...

I have been emailing my sister today about dry shampoo –– which I just discovered and I would have to say it is the #1 best hair product of all time. Like if I was on the Nobel Prize committee I would be kicked off it by now for suggesting whoever invented that shit gets the chemistry prize. God bless them anyway.

BUT here is a really weird message from my sister:
"
I love dry shampoo, but here is the bad news. Before I ever bought any I read some reviews. The aerosol spray kinds had a weird reputation for having the contents in the can just kind of disappear. People wrote and believed the bottle was just some how leaking the product out so I was afraid of spending $15 on something that I wouldn't get to fully enjoy. Recently Suave did this repackaging thing and also started making a dry shampoo. Now for $2.50 it didn't seem so risky. I bought I can (aerosol!) and used it occasionally. I've been trying to wash my hair less and it was nice. One day i went to use it and it was empty. I assumed this was because I left the lid off. I buy a new can, use it once and it was empty the next time I used it, recapped and everything. Suave at least has some kind of a guarantee so I need to look that up or maybe just return it. So the moral of the story is some dry shampoos can evaporate and others can last a while (all the same brand) and why they evaporate is a mystery so save you receipt. Sorry to be miss doom and gloom cause dry shampoo really is great product."

WTF??? How does this happen?

Col. Pinkney Lugenbeel (Abbbottt), Friday, 13 May 2011 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

Huh? This is very odd. Dry shampoo is great. I'm gonna get some tonight now that you mentioned this. We will conduct an experiment and see if mine disappears.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 13 May 2011 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I paid like $18 for mine (this) but if that Suave shit works I feel a bit silly spending so much!

Col. Pinkney Lugenbeel (Abbbottt), Friday, 13 May 2011 21:02 (fifteen years ago)

Ummm sprayable dry shampoo might have a lot of alcohol/solvents in it? Which would explain evaporation issues maybe. And alcohol IS drying, so it might help cut through oil on the hair...but it's not really the effect you want. Stuff like starch that SOAKS UP the oil and can be brushed out is better.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Friday, 13 May 2011 21:02 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe it will turn my hair into a brittle husk of its former self? I don't care because in the meantime it has 100% solved my helmet hair problems.

Col. Pinkney Lugenbeel (Abbbottt), Friday, 13 May 2011 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah look, the first 3 ingreds are isopropane, butane, and denatured alcohol.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Friday, 13 May 2011 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

I love powder dry shampoos SO much and they add a TON of body, but corn starch is too white for darker hair and I'm not sure what the home version of a colored powder would be.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Friday, 13 May 2011 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

Do you have a rec on a good one, Laurel?

Col. Pinkney Lugenbeel (Abbbottt), Friday, 13 May 2011 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

No. :( My hair is just light enough to use plain corn starch on the roots if I brush it out well, so that has sufficed!

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Friday, 13 May 2011 21:07 (fifteen years ago)

People have always recommended the bumble + bumble hair powder, but it's $35 for like four and a half oz?? Which is why I say, there ought to be a home version! But at least the b+b stuff, you can get in dark colors.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Friday, 13 May 2011 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

I had pretty good luck with ground oats, just pulverized some rolled or even scotch cut in my coffee/spice grinder. I left them slightly chunky so it was easier to brush out. Adding various brownish spices (cloves, cinnamon, allspice) made it smell nice but didn't do anything toward a darker color.

Jaq, Friday, 13 May 2011 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

I've used old face powder.

tokyo rosemary, Saturday, 14 May 2011 04:19 (fifteen years ago)

Bought some last night as promised. Will keep an eye out for mysteriously missing product.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Saturday, 14 May 2011 14:07 (fifteen years ago)

oh oh oh I am a totally dry shampoo whore and have come to the following conclusions:

- not a fan of the spray stuff--I like the ones you shake in. Better placement control!
- have tried many, but my favorite is Fekkai Au Natural. Oscar Blandi has one that is very similar but with a lemon smell that reminds me of Pledge furniture polish (not my cup of tea).
- The All-Nighter makes shake-in powders in colors. IME even white powders are OK in super dark hair (like mine) if they are very finely milled and applied with care. The All-Nighter stuff has a very tacky feel, which is great when I want uber-volume, but I'm not too into it for every day. Also it is a mess if you run your hands through your hair and get brown stuff on your hands.

quincie, Saturday, 14 May 2011 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

But yeah, dry shampoo is super great stuff and I can't believe I lived without it for 35ish years!

quincie, Saturday, 14 May 2011 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

tresemme has 2 versions - one that's a spray, and one that's a mousse. i got both because they were cheap. i like spray better. the fekkai powder that you shake in makes me look like i have dandruff - 2 hours later it's on my shoulder instead of in my hair. i liked an oscar blandi spray but it ran out really fast (wonder if this was the evaporation thing?).
