last night i went Mobile Clubbing at Victoria Station. the idea is you turn up at a certain time and start dancing, by yourself, to the music on your headphones. there were about 50 of us last night and we had a marvellous time and got a pretty good audience, some of whom joined in. heartwarming stuff. it's kind of like flashmobbing, except fun.

anyway this is more a recommendation than anything else, it was grate and the next one is at Canary Wharf, July 22nd. dance dance dance!

Have a squeeze of this fad.

ha ha, a club promoter i know in Brighton touted this idea a couple of years ago (also touting a night called Stop Making Friends in which people are encouraged to turn up alone, listen to great music and not dance or talk to each other) but i guess heads just weren't ready (thank you Flash Mobs)

everyone last night turned up alone or in groups of 2/3 and you don't interact much while you're dancing. no-one really talked until we went to the pub afterwards.

the idea is you turn up at a certain time and start dancing, by yourself, to the music on your headphones.

worst idea ever.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I find this interesting because dancing always seems kind of self-absorbed to start with, people concentrating on how they look, how they're moving, how other people perceive them, etc. The idea of mobile clubbing just removes it one step further from being a communal activity. But mine is an admittedly indie whiteboy point of view.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm an indie whiteboy and I think this is shit. You don't wanna interact with people, stay at home.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It removes the communal-aural aspect of dancing, making it purely visual, essentially turning it into a fashion show.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm talking out of my ass here.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I am reminded of Gillian Wearing's "Dancing in Peckham" wherein she did just this, alone, and photographed it. Can't remember more details.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

But it proves my half-assed point.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

no no no, it is an intensely communal experience because of the setting. in a club or wherever, everyone there is united by the fact that they are in a club, that they are dancing to the same music, that they like the same music, that they are wearing similar clothes.

at this event, the only thing you have in common with everyone else is that you are dancing, and you are surrounded by people who aren't. it makes the act of dancing something to be shared, as opposed to a collective individual experience.

this is a half-assed argument formulated in response to hstencil, i didn't think about it at the time, it was just hilarious fun and everyone was very nice.

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot give my own PoV on this as pete b. is my new best friend.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You can find me in the club, headphones flaked with crud
Look dorkface I got no social skills if you into geekin' up
I'm into hating people, I ain't into making love
So come leave me alone if you into getting mobile clubbed

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, you are white.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never denied it. What would be the use?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

haha mark it's ok, don't hold back

hstencil i told you, we all went to the pub afterwards and everyone got on very well. dancing in a public place to music no-one else can hear is a lot of fun, don't knock it till you've tried it.

dancing to music only you can hear = you are paranoid schizophrenic. This reminds me of people walking down the street and it seems like they're talking to themselves until you realize they've got one of those cellphone ear socket dealies.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

no drugs were involved

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

exactly! you need medication.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

those people are weird, yes. but these people are radically re-defining the way people perceive public space! or something!

x-post perhaps

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I kind of wonder if this will turn into everyday behavior for the whole world before long. Put a lot of buskers out of business, for sure. It would also make the aliens really, really confused.

I do the headnod/funky walking thing to music in my head all the time. Paranoid schizophrenic, I dunno.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

But DOOOOOD how psychefriggindelic is it when people are dancing to what YOU'RE listening to! Woah.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Dudes, the new gameboy is going to have multiplay wireless connectivity. Imagine the possibilities for collaborative dance music listening or even compostion in public spaces@!!!@

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

they've done nights like this at clubs too, haven't they? i swear i've read on ILX or somewhere how there are these iPod nights where people just turn up and dance to whatever they want, but hang together and drink, etc.

at least the club doesn't have to worry about noise complaints...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

guess what everybody it's time for mobile clubbing, again! they've changed the date!

6.11pm, this evening, at Euston. i will be there dancing to talking heads.

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 18 June 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean the band, talking heads.

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 18 June 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)
