how many ILXers post, what you might call, 'in character'?

Message Bookmarked

do you feel like a specific character when you post/respond? is it something you put a degree of effort into? do you feel that others are aware of this character, and is that good or bad? perhaps you are not aware of it all

(this, for example, is not stevem in character - it is more an impersonation of a couple of people on ILX who i feel do adopt a certain character, which in turn may constitute a character of sorts for me, stevem)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I of course imagined you posting that in your gurning grinning photo mode from Tom's wedding FAP.

I tend to think I'm much more quiet and gruff in real life. Almost everyone I know denies this (keep in mind I also think I'm an introvert, which nobody believes).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaha, Ned Raggett, "quiet in real life," hahahaha.

I love you, NED.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have much of a character, I'm pretty nondescript -- except for whatever people choose to hate on me for.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

my posts often use/utilise/feature forward slashes denoting that i am applying meaning to more than one term in a certain context, and also 'words' in single 'quotemarks' as demonstrated here. sometimes i wonder if people notice that and attach it to whatever perception of me they have i.e. 'stevem is the guy who does that a lot when he posts', if not some distinctly more interesting characteristic. i use perhaps/seems a lot rather than asserting my opinions too (making them effectively suggestions rather than opinions).

oh and i swear a fucking lot. and i sometimes think about really pointless stuff.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Hrm. I don't feel like I modify my normal personality/character much at all when I post. I suppose I may not be the best judge though. Perhaps Ned or DB or someone else who knows me in real life can tell me if I'm drastically different here.

Ned, I 'spect you are balanced between introvert and extrovert pretty evenly. I get the impression that you are equally comfortable getting your energy from others or alone.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't put the slightest bit of effort into my ILX persona.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

On the other hand, if you look up "extrovert," there is a picture of me next to the entry. And I'm giving the finger to the camera just because.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really try and be a charcter, I don't put a whole lot of thought into creating a monkier. Sometimes I'll do the West London thing, but I truly do love West London.

Am I the same offline? I don't know, similar I guess.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I say stupid things in real life too!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread was partly inspired by you jel - curious

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I am just as stupid in real life, and many ILXors can attest to that.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess my "character" is that I'm a little weirder on here than I am in real life, plus for some reason I'm less likely to engage in heated arguments on here than in real life, i.e. last night when I told my roommate she was "being stupid" for leaving for work at noon and leaving the front door unlocked so her friend could get in at 5pm to "read lines" with a friend of hers. here I'm much more diplomatic.

also in real life my Kylie Minogue love is basically unknown.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps Ned or
DB or someone else who knows me in real life can tell me if I'm drastically different here.

You're pretty much yourself, I think. This is very much a good thing!

Ned, I 'spect you are balanced between introvert and extrovert pretty evenly. I get the impression that you are equally comfortable getting your energy
from others or alone.

I think this is a perfect description of me. Thanks!

Stence is not stupid.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't seem stupid h

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

But I HAVE met Stence and he's not stupid.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I really don't say anything different here than I do in real life, except I get a chance to talk about my petty loves and hates like viking hats or beards a lot more. But I don't have much of a character.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

perhaps the acid test might be if you were to present another ILXer with five uncredited posts, all by the same author, and whether that person could guess who the five posts were by, or indeed whether they were all by the same person.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

a viking hat would definitely add character to you Nicole (not that i don't think you have any already)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to be polite, productive and serious in real life. But my ILX persona has taken over .. please, send help ...

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

but that might not mean "in character" as much as just them being clearly themselves.

fwiw I think I am fairly similar here to real life.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I ever post in character. But I have posted a few times in costume.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Have I mentioned my monstrous thundercock lately?

"VengaDan Perry" (Dan Perry), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

You're pretty much yourself, I think. This is very much a good thing!

Thanks. Now that I think of it though... The one thing I may put more effort into on here is making sure that I phrase things a little more precisely. Since a great deal of my humor is sarcastic, I think I often run the risk of being misinterpreted when represented as text only.

But then that's pretty much par fot the course on the interweb.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I will say I am much more likely to correct someone's grammar on ILX than I am in real life, mostly because you are all out of punching range.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Then again, if someone doesn't get it when I'm being sarcastic, fuck em.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

In 'real life' I'm actually quite smart.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It's okay if you think jel is a character, it's just that I don't want you to think that James in real life is a whole lot different to jel online - I do like staying in, I do like Poison, I have a small group of close friends. I guess, I do not have in me to argue with or be mean to people online, something I can do okay offline but only with people I know really well. Which means even though I've posted here for three years, I'm still not sure how well I know most ilxers.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan is full of hate.

Nicole has plenty of character!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I also have never met anyone from ILX (yet, I will soon probably)

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, like tomorrow. For instance.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

in real life CUTTY is a COOL DUDE!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

this is true. red alert in the 10th floor bathroom.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"perhaps the acid test might be if you were to present another ILXer with five uncredited posts, all by the same author, and whether that person could guess who the five posts were by, or indeed whether they were all by the same person.

Surely, that just means a person has posted a lot and has a recognisable style and range of interests?

Maybe, I've misinterpreted 'in character' as meaning a negative trait? i.e they are acting in a way that is not really 'them', which I'm not.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

jon williams is exactly the same in real life as he is online.

x-post

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

jel i think you are reflecting your actual genuine character a lot in your posts, which is also what i mean with this thread really. it's not like i've ever seen a post by you and thought 'oh he's lying' - i believe everything you say about yourself, tho often it feels like you do actually revel in pointing out that you don't like x because it's not y or whatever on threads in a sort of...unsatisfying way? as in being contrary for the sake of it, or highlighting your eccentricity, clockwork style, to make an unwarranted point. no offence dude, i just think it's interesting (and i have other examples of other people in mind, having already thought about myself).

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i wasn't meaning it as a negative trait, just an interesting trait

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

it would appear to be true tho that some people on here ARE acting in character(s) they do not resemble offline. the most apparent example may be c-mang.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

lauren are you still bitter over that fracas? i've been working out, i think i can take you.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't met enough ilxors to judge, but I'll bet that the craziest or most irritating people (like c-man) are probably just as obnoxious in real life. They may not be as overt about it, but it's still there.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm much less stream of consciousness IRL. like i won't open my mouth unlses i think the ensuing conversation will have legs. i hate small talk and don't like talking about stuff that I know based on past experience won't interest the audience. IE, I'm not gonna launch into speeches about like, T.I. around a friend that hates rap.

plate of dinosaurs (San Te), Sunday, 15 August 2010 23:56 (fifteen years ago)

A teacher once told me I talk like a book. This makes me much sought-after at parties and other social occasions.

On the other hand, I guess I'm looser and more willing to get excited about stuff in real life. Here I find myself drafting and rereading, even for boring posts like "Yay! This song rocks!".

eight years pass...

attended a funeral today, three kids (18-26ish) of the deceased all spoke. found it a bit much at times but all in all they were a credit to him i suppose

reminded (always want to say 'remound') me that the night of my mother's burial the aul fella handed me a poem to read (to myself, not perform or anything) about their travails and his feelings about events hitherto

theyd had a disaster of a marriage, id had a long few days and wasnt feeling hugely indulgent of the grosse pointe blank bully denouement at the time

i read it, criticised the scansion (which was v bad tbfttr) and suggested that hed want to revisit what he was trying to convey in two or three of the verses as hed let rhyming it get in the way of clarity imo

that is, imo, probably a notable crossover moment btwn ilx "character" and irl behaviour.

do we rly have characters anymore tho. we're all here long enough to have demo'd enough range to the place

Hey, turns out my "neediness" was untreated mental illness; ever since I got it treated (medication and therapy) I haven't been as "needy, sensitive" or "insecure"! Nowadays with so many of y'all my friends on FB and thus able to see how I am on a day-to-day basis (i.e. my "real" self), I don't even have to answer this question. Also, if you are able to present a different persona to your IRL one every day on social media, you've got a lot more energy than I do/are a better actor than I am.
