Fuck YEAH!!! My name-sake!

(I may be high on coffee)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 14 June 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh. There were all these posters all over Hackney advertising a band called "Something For Kate" and I was not sure if I should go see them or not. (Besides, none of them were DDB's so I think they're lying.)

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Monday, 14 June 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"Something for Kate's Weekend"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 14 June 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I heart this band. Especially live. Last time I saw them, two wildly drunk girls (whom I'm pretty sure did NOT know each other) started spinning each other around. It got pretty aggressive but they were laughing so I think all was cool.

Je4nne Ć’ury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 14 June 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

First time, I rocked out to Spacemen 3 for the hell of it...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 June 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Best McLusky song ever? Hmmm... I don't know... But right now I have Collogen Rock stuck in my head.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 14 June 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I just bought my first McLusky album last night! McLusky Does Dallas. Haha, maybe it's a comment on my life but I thought to myself as I grabbed the record "I wonder if that ILX McLuskey likes this band", and here's the answer.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 14 June 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I have met members of the band Hester, tho I never got to see them live.

But I wouldn't mind seeing McLusky as they're fun to jump around to (well, at least, the song that goes "my love is bigger than your love" is, anyway, don't know anything else by them).

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 14 June 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

lucky! what i wouldnt give to see Lightsaber Cocksucking Blues performed live...

chrisco (chrisco), Monday, 14 June 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

you can live without it, believe me.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 14 June 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The Difference Between Me and You Is That I'm Not Gonna Get to Go to the Show.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 14 June 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you seen them live, lauren?

The new album is really good, but I haven't gotten to listen to it that much (damn my lack of a car stereo!).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 14 June 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, i've seen them a few times. i'm not a reliable source of info, though, because i'm apparently the only person on ilx who loathes them! if you like their records, then you'll almost certainly like the show.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 14 June 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw them last wekk and it was a fuckin' blast. Enjoy the show, Sarah!

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 14 June 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

they are fucken AWESOME and you're in for a treat. "don't go fuckin' in the barn... because the barn's on fire!"

emsk, Monday, 14 June 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"Our ex singer..."

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 14 June 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Ms. Brown I was at that show too but did not spy you. But yes, that show was a fucking blast, indeed. The loudest concert I have been to in a long while. Plus, shirts that say "shitrock" = classic.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Monday, 14 June 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes indeedy. As are shirts that say "fuck this band"

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Mclusky are very fun live and say funny things between songs. And during them, obviously.

Fergal (Ferg), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

That bassist guy is so much more of a cute geek than I expected.

Fergal (Ferg), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes indeedy. As are shirts that say "fuck this band"

Ah, so that's what that shirt was all about. I was wondering.

martin m. (mushrush), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Although, come to think of it, a shirt that said "shirtrock" might be even more classic.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a tough call. How 'bout some pictures?

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

why is this on ILE?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

is there anyone else besides me who hates mclusky?

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I love McLusky!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i have no idea who these dudes are, but i get them mixed up with that pre-stereolab marxist band.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

uhh.. you mean mccarthy?

not the hardest name to remember, in its context, is it?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i have no idea what it refers to, so yes.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think you'd like mclusky.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

cutty, ILE is where I hang out because I love EVERYTHING. This thread is about me being excited about seeing them. :-D

I also love music, but not critiqueing it so much.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

ever heard of someone named joseph mccarthy?

xpost

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

they named themselves after the reactionary us senator? why?!

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

sigh.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

can you explain why you've chosen to sigh?

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

do these words have anything in common:

marxism
left-wing
communism
mccarthy

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, i've gleaned the connection, thanks. it still doesn't seem obviously apparent to me why you'd want to name your band after someone so wretched.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

anyway, sorry for thread derail.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

is there anyone else besides me who hates mclusky?

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I suffered through 15 minutes of their live set, awful...they were wearing RAVE pants!

if anyone even says anyhting about them including the words, LIZARD and JESUS...it's GO time.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah's poor thread... sheesh!

Aaron A., Monday, 14 June 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Bizarre, this has got more answers in a couple of hours than any Mclusky thread on ILM managed in its entire run...

Jason J, Monday, 14 June 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

McLusky is not for everyone, but they are very much for me. They're not, I don't know, Beyonce!?

I just think it's funny, lauren, that you would worry that everyone likes them. OH NO! They might take over the world! ha ha j/k :-D

What should they wear instead of raver pants? Matching costumes? I really appreciate their unattractiveness in general.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 14 June 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

He seems to be enjoying himself.

Jon, Have you heard McLusky?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 14 June 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Do they sound like Idlewild like AMG claims? (I used to dig on Idlewild a lot.)

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Monday, 14 June 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

NOOOOOOOO

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 14 June 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

http://listencloser.youshouldbehappy.com/archives/000616.html

contains one of their best tracks.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 14 June 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

They're Pixies-influenced, but more like Gouge Away than Where is my Mind.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 14 June 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The requested URL /Mclusky-She_Will_Only_Bring_You_Happiness.mp3 was not found on this server.

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

she will only bring you happiness doesn't even sound like mclusky, so why bother introducing someone with that song? it's a les savy fav ripoff.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

RAVE. PANTS. PEOPLE.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

word!!!!!!!!!

ddb (ddb), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, the drum production i did with a firealarm buzzer mic, a directional vocal mic, a keg and some plastic jugs sounds so much better than this.

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

its like a parody of the pixies/nirvana

THINNEST PRODUCTION EVER

so obv. british and crap

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

haha it was produced by albini wasn't it?

ARL (Adrian Langston), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, albini.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

what is WITH you people? Willfully destroying Sarah's happiness @ the upcoming Mcluskython, while being an ILX hallmark, is just not nice

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

RAVE. PANTS. PEOPLE.

also, eyebrow ring.

sarah, i'm sorry.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

yea, Albini did record it! wow

http://www.n.ethz.ch/student/schmitzj/download/covers/B/Bush%20-%20Razorblade%20Suitcase.gif

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, Morley.

Also, I like Alibini's production in general, but I realize that's pretty dangerous territory, especially since McLusky is apparently so contraversial.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

They're about as controversial as Bush.

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll admit I saw Bush in concert because Veruca Salt was opening for them (VS has also used Albini). This was several years ago, because I was still in college. Anyway, Bush had these huge screens showing scenes of drug use and graveyards running behind them, while Gavin took off his shirt and ran from one side of the stage to the other (instrument-less) posing and dodging undies. It was pretty hilarious.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay Veruca Salt! They were fun live.

Thankfully I didn't have to see Bush to see them.

"Dodging Undies" would make a decent band name.

martin m. (mushrush), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Is the guy in Jon's pic wearing his jeans backwards?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

it's called IRONY, amateur!st, you should write a paper on it

-- cutty (holle...) (webmail), June 14th, 2004 11:53 AM. (mcutt) (later) (link)

i don't really know how to respond to your posts, with these sort of jabs and rhetorical questions. i understand the notion of irony, as you might expect, but i don't see the sort of irony in calling your band "mccarthy" (after joe mcc.) having much purpose beyond being, well, textbook irony. that said, it's not an issue that matters to be much--being pretty much stereolab-indifferent--and further, i don't really see why the tone of your emails is so--seemingly--brittle. i don't even know who you are, much less do i wish to rile or offend you.

i'm also not sure who i would write a paper FOR, so i'm sure of the provenance and meaning of that part of the joke. presuming it was a joke.

also, jon, when you post oodles and oodles of images on threads, it has the potential to crash people's computers. especially those using modems, like poor old me. so whatever amusement you get out of it, just consider that, if you care.

(sorry for the longwindedness but sometimes utter, exaspering sincerity is the best method.)

so anyhow:
have fun at the show sarah!

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

So was it good?

Jason J, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Awesome. My ears are still ringing. Their touring opening band (Oceansize) is pretty dreadful, total Radiohead wannabees, complete with three guitarists and laptop. But McLusky was awesome, and they were indeed hilarious on stage. I won't transcribe the jokes, but at the end of the show, the bass player (who is the coolest guy in the world) called the roadie out on stage, handed him the bass and showed him which note to play, then started to walk offstage, but turned around, ran, and jumped onto the roadie, who carried him around for awhile before falling over, and then they wrestled for a while.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude if your computer can't handle like 8 animated gifs at once, try oprading to Netscape 3 Gold.

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

At the ATP gig, the string holding the bassist's glasses on snapped not long in. He got some gaffer tape and stuck it around the back of his head, but it wasn't quite long enough, so he took a bit twice as long again and taped it so it covered the back of his head and wrapped around to cover 80% of his glasses.

It was at around this point that the wheels came off.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I would totally marry that bass player. His eyes were closed for the entire show as far as I could tell.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

He sure shook his oatmeal brains around a lot.

Yeah, this was one of the most enjoyable shows I've been to in a long time. As Nick said afterwards, I wasn't ready for them to stop playing. Most shows we've been to lately seem to go on too long. You'll start off liking a band and grow to hate them while you're standing there.

Alan-is-a-cowboy-killer!
