We rented it to see the swing dancing. I suspected I migth encounter the type of melodrama that emotionally molests you and leaves you feeling depressed. i was not disaapointed. Thank you "Swing Kids" for ruining my evening. I hate movies like this! Why cant all movies be pleasurable!
I dont really hate drama, I just hate this type of pornodrama that is forced down your throat. I cant help but fell very sad and I dont even want to!

You lost me after this sentence, man.

i think that i took an english pomo/feminist-typa class w/ this course title when i was an undergrad.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

SWING HEIL!

TheNewJMod (JMod), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw them making this. It was the bit where a young chap opens a little box to find it full of human ashes. Poor fellow had to do it over and over again.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a hilarious movie. What better way to subvert than Nazis than to swing dance?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the fact that I guessed the tone of this thread before I read it. PJ has also made me completely lose my shit.

Another movie like this is "When A Man Loves A Woman", which was billed as a gentle romantic comedy and ended up being all about Meg Ryan's disturbing drinking problem.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

IT DON'T MEAN A THING IF IT AIN'T GOT THAT SWING!!!!

*is shot dead*

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I just say how happy I am that the neo indie hipster swing craze is dead and buried?

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

rent Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz and tell us how it is three days later when you finish it.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It's really good!! Everything you want from a movie!!!

Gear, you are a wise and good man.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

hear hear, gear and ned!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I am sad to have missed out on it, it seems like my kind of scene!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It really wasn't. I thought the same thing until I saw it in action.

"Swingers" has much to answer for in my book.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

combustible edison is OK -- though i preferred 'em back when they were christmas.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, I heard "Mambo No. 5" on the radio the other day and it sounded way better than I remembered. Never noticed all the hip-hop sounds. In fact, if neo-swing had done more of that kind of shit I might have dug it more.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(christmas -- now THERE'S a pretty good "lost" 80s indie band)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked Urge Overkill's crushed velvet suits and big gold medallions. But that was a slightly different kind of thing.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Imagine expecting to go into a club filled with likeable Jon Favreaus and Vince Vaughns and discovering LEGIONS OF COCKFARMERS WHO THINK THEY HAVE THE CHARISMA OF JON FAVREAU AND VINCE VAUGHN BUT ACTUALLY HAVE THE CHARISMA OF FRESH CAT SHIT.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

you lost me at "likeable Jon Favreaus."

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"FRESH" cat shit

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Best thing about Swing Kids was the commercial that Frank Whaley did for IFC a few years ago where he said something to the effect of:

"I don't understand why Hollywood keeps coming out with remakes of good movies. I was in this terrible movie called Swing Kids. They should remake that only make it good."

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 17 June 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

you lost me at "likeable Jon Favreaus."

It's a high hurdle, that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 June 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG DAN LIKED "Swingers" REVOKE HIS CRED CARD NOW!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

:-P

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

You ridiculous man, we only speak of the one actor! We said nothing of Vince Vaughn!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 June 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I just say -- I love Frank Whaley? Specially in CAREER OPPORTUNITIES.

Homosexual II, Friday, 18 June 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I like him in that and as a young Archie Graham.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

for some reason for the first four or five posts in this thread i kept picturing newsies.

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

They're pretty similar in their cheesy awfulness and in their Bale-yness.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

And they both had gimps in them.

Jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Pulp Kids (vs. Pulp Newsies)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck all y'all. This film rocked. The part where he finds out the boxes have ashes in them - I get shivers every time. The suicide in the bathtub, the "swing heil", the swing music (taken as a diagetic thing, and not a pop phenomenon of the 90's), Kenneth Branagh...it's just plain awesome. You people are too goddamn jaded, burned, or cynical.

Girolamo Savonarola, Friday, 18 June 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

or not gay.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

You know I gotta say that whole swing craze thing had something noble at its core but then it just turned into a bunch of ex-frat boys glomming onto the hype after Swingers (epitomizing the worst aspects of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack) and a whole lotta former theater students who wanted to wear funny hats, and of course they'd never buy a Benny Goodman CD or go near any real swing, not while Cherry Poppin' Daddies were around singing about zoot suit riots.

I blame that goddamn Gap ad more than anything, and it says a lot that the shitty Brian Setzer remake of the Louis Prima tune from that ad got far more play than the original in the ensuing mess.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 18 June 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the plural is "Favreaux."

Paul Eater (eater), Friday, 18 June 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Favrii
