New Fucking Jeans

OK. I need new jeans because the one pair I really like are kaput. So I go out looking in a few shops and I CAN'T FIND ANYTHING I LIKE. All I want is some very simple, straight-cut (I could handle boot cut) jeans in very dark denim. And preferably the dark denim that leans more towards grey-ish than deep blue. Y'all know what I'm talking about...

Now you would think that in London I could find something of this sort but no siree! Nothing! I tried a bunch of stores and all the jeans had this crazy fading shit going on. I know it's cool with the kids and all that but come on. I particularly hate all these 'pissy pants' as I call them - the ones that are faded very light in big spots (like the thighs) making it look like someone wearing light jeans has pissed themselves.

I thought I had found what I wanted in one shop, then I saw that there were these intentional horizontal 'crease-fades' in certain spots. I mean, WTF? Man o man out of desperation I even went into the GAP against my better judgement and they had tons of styles but nothing even close to what I'm talking about - most had the fading business going on, or were just lame colours/cuts.

Surely finding regular ol' dark denim jeans can't be that hard in this city. Any advice? I'm not fussy about brands at all, but I don't want to pay a fortune, so fancy designer-brand jeans are probably out...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a levis store in covent garden, and maybe also on regent street...they should have a better selection than some places.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, get a life granddad! j/k

no, maybe you ought to go shop in Stevenage.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I have returned to levis. GO FOR IT.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

also, i've heard that zara does ok jeans for boys.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

h&m dude.

they will be slightly bootcut, but they do plain jeans (that fit, not hanging round one's arse) at a v reasonable price (£13 or so)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Levis thirded.

Also, Debenhams have a surprisingly good (and cheap) range of decent jeans.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

primark had TONS of jeans. i love primark.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I heart Primark's "they're jeans, but they don't look like jeans" jeans which I can get away with wearing to work!

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

rob, do not buy your jeans at primark, kids will laugh at you in the street.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm definitely cool with levi's, although i didn't see their store in covent garden. i am intruiged by this H&M idea. the price certainly wins me over...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

looks like i need to get myself to a 'mall' or at least a big department store-type place...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

h&m either oxford circus or long acre (there's about eleventeen on oxford street, but i'm not sure how many of them have bloke's clothes...)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Mens H+M on High Street Ken is good as well.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

tescos value jeans are £4. those are a bit bright blue though. they do some darker ones for a bit more

last time i was in h&m, all the mens jeans had those horizontal crease marks printed on. i just try and ignore them, as i cant find any other option.

maybe try uniqlo on regents street. that'll be the cheapest, and they dont normally bother with keeping up to date with 'trneds' (like having creases on yr jeans)

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Levis 529 Low-Rise etc etc. Good jeans. Cheap too.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

the levis store is on longacre. it isn't giant. i think there may be a huge levis store on regent street, but i might be imagining things.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

there is

rob has the ideal figure for zara clothes, tall people don't seem to exist in spain

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Levis store in Regent Street. Also try department stores like Dickins & Jones (Regent Street) and Selfridges because they have a range of brands. Also try the Lee store in Carnaby Street. Oh and Uniqlo as suggested above. Muji do jeans as well..never tried them on. Start at Piccadilly Circus and weave northwards. If in Covent Garden there's a Levis store in Long Acre, Diesel in Neal Street and Interstate in Endell Street (good range of imported American stock - Levis, Carharrt etc.).

David (David), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

H&M twenty-fifthed. Supercheap, last for years, really good cut, as dark as you like, gajillions of styles, all good.

Primark seconded for jeans-that-don't-look-like-jeans, too - under a tenner, it's bloody ridiculous.

Otherwise try Mash at 73 Oxford St - quite trendy but don't let that put you off, they're nice too!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys are amazing. I now have many options. The purist in me wants to get some Levis - I'll look for those 529s. But I think an H&M visit is in the cards...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

What's this Zara place all about? Sounds kinda Euro to me...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the spanish h&M

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

their jeans are not bootcut, probably one of the only places that has straight-leg jeans in trendy colors

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

If you can handle the shame, Brent Cross has a few ok shops- Fenwick's has some surprisingly good stuff in amongst the cardies

beanz (beanz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you have Goodwill/Salvation Army/equivalents in Londonium? You must. I've found stacks of Lucky Brand, Levis, C. Klein,in L.A. as well as mountains of Gap and other knock offs, for $10 or less. You have to wade through junk, spend a bit of time, but it sounds like you've been spending time at this already.

Skottie, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

We have charity shops which are the equivalent, yes. But I really want to buy NEW jeans. And preferably new fucking jeans. I have done plenty of searching for cool 2nd hand old-school jeans/cords/etc in my youth, but the time has come to move on...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I looked at some Levi's tonight which were pretty close to what I want, although I'm not super-keen on the bright yellow/gold stitching - I like jeans that have the more silver/grey type stitching. Yes, I'm being picky.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

That kind of fades out after they get washed a few times anyway.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
hey how about those G-Star jeans?

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I was going to suggest G-Star or the massively expensive Paper Denim Cloth jeans (go on Rob - you're worth it). These are both on the 2nd floor of Selfridges. There's a section with Diesel, G-Star, Levis, Lee's, off to the right as you get off the escalator. Be warned though, the people who work in the changing rooms are very bitchy and you can take only 4 items in. You probably will need a lady friend to go with you to bring you a fresh batch of 4 items to try on every 6 minutes.

marianna, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

wow! i forgot about this. i never reported back on my success! thanks to the trusted advice of ILX, i found my ideal jeans at H&M. 15 quid!! hooray! i'm still curious about this zara business, which i will investigate later.

i can't believe this whole thread went by without some wise crack about "they make jeans for fucking?" etc.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

are g-stars good for girls and can I mailorder them? My favorite jeans at the moment are men's 501s so I guess maybe I should just go for men's sizes anyway.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought some kind of trendy ripped jeans with a black design on them. They were quite expensive and I wore them about twice. :-(

What's the best style of jean at the moment? I generally wear very baggy jeans but I'm getting too old to look like a skateboarder. Plus I don't skate, so I'm not exactly allowed to ;-) I'm not a huge fan of tight jeans either because I get the whole "big feet" issue that Ronan mentioned. Flares? Are they in or out this week? Any colour? Style? Brand?

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I need to get some more jeans, and much as I love H&M, a) I live in them and b) the quickness of crotch-dissolve is putting me off going there again for a while. So I'm changing tactic - I'm going to look at actually expensive jeans in the hope that I'll find something that fits really well and lasts a long time*.

I also want to find 35 inch long jeans. Anyone know which brands make these as standard? 34 is too short, 36 too long.

*or just lose some weight on your inner thighs you carb-faced bastard

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I got Diesel jeans at Filene's Basement for $30 yesterday. They're dark, dark blue and heavy.

j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

They will never open a fucking H&M in Minnesota. :(

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 11 February 2005 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

dkny jeans label jeans (this is not a typo fyi) go on sale really frequently, and they're comfortable and flattering for un-assed males with (shock, horror in the US) waists a bit smaller than their inseams.

Remy (x Jeremy), Friday, 11 February 2005 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Oi am loving my new New Look jeans, which are a bit bootcut to detract from chunky thighs and have nice stitching on the arse pockets. They are drying from their first wash right now, so I'm slightly trepidated however.

Down with the fading thing, although it's somewhat passé. Looks ridiculous if there's an enormous patch of it like you've been on the slide in a playground a few too many times.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 11 February 2005 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got some awesome fancy indigo Lee jeans.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oni Denim from Japan. They have them at Stackhouse on Lafayette in NYC. Amazing jeans.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got some XXTYPEII from denime from japan.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

xxpost: For no good reason, the pockets are lined in like green felt = pretty cool.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I have purchased two pairs of CK jeans but their idea of "long" isn't quite the same as my idea of long.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I just checked and I'm wearing levis 505 straight leg, relaxed fit. Are you supposed to remove that big tan tag from your levis?

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

New Yorkers: BEACON'S CLOSET, people!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 12 February 2005 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 12 February 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

laurence youy leave the tag on so the person behind you can be impressed by your waist size/leg length.

stephen. s (yaye), Saturday, 12 February 2005 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i got some gstar "low loose" jeans today marked down $150--->$58

WOOOOOOOOOOOH!

in bad news, energie has for some inexplicable reason lowered the rise even further on their previously-perfect "loose morris" style. which means that at 30x34 it is too-tight at the waist, but at 31x34 it is baggy at the ass. does anybody know a reputable source for energie jeans?? because i may be reduced to scouring the net for last season's.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 12 February 2005 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

American Eagle sells surprisingly great jeans. Everything else they sell is crap, but the jeans are relatively cheap ($29-39), soft and cut better than any others I've tried.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 12 February 2005 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 12 February 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Why have Levi's fucked with the cut of their 501s? The shits have made them looser. Anyone know of a good substitute for the original cut?

Ben Dot (1977), Saturday, 12 February 2005 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone think I should keep wearing my Paper Denim & Cloth jeans in dark navy with all sorts of whiskering and fading stuff going on? The style is kind of played, but they're the only dark pair I have that are actually long enough, and I like them. And I don't live in anything like a fashion capital.

I saw all these people at teh Fashion Week doing the jeans tucked into boots thing, and I keep telling myself, don't try it, don't try it, you'll be sorry...

daria g (daria g), Sunday, 13 February 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

DAMN IT. I just now made the same scanning error whilst passing this thread by!! Maybe I too should "honour the crucifix" or something equivalent (um, DON'T "save a prayer 'til the morning after"?).

Anyway. Favorite brand of jeans: Lee jeans. Comfy. Like putting on the bottom of a pair of sturdier, better-to-be-seen-outside-with pajamas. Plus they don't discriminate when it comes to the sizes of their potential customers, which is AWESOME (and sadly, what a lot of jeans manufacturers do end up doing, MOST ESPECIALLY the "fine" people at Old Navy).

Surreal Addiction (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 13 February 2005 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't hold your breath. Actually, on second thought, do hold your breath.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 February 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

On topic, the wife convinced me not long ago to try a pair of entirely expensive Earl Jeans (after years of seeing me schlep about in entirely unflattering, boxy Gap jeans). I quite liked them (although paying for them was a painful experience), but after barely a year, I've managed to wear away/rip them -- and not in a cool Johnny Ramone sorta way either. The crotch is all shredded, and the back pocket (wallet pocket) is in severe disrepair. This wouldn't bother me so much if I hadn't practically sold my apartment in order to pay for them. Had them stitched up at my local dry cleaners joint (after the wife convinced me that no, a Killing Joke patch over the back pocket would not, in fact, look cool). Am also a bit turned off by the exclusive nature of Earl Jeans' advertising (although, I heartily applaud any/all photographs of Giselle sans shirt).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 February 2005 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

My skinny jeans that I bought in 2001 fit again, so it's like new jeans. I think I look good in them. (Old Navy low rise & flared)

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 14 February 2005 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

H&M, haha, I went in there for the first time a few weeks ago and realized there were absolutely no jeans in my size, and half of the store's racks were marked "slender fit." Some of the clothes looked fantastic, but I guess it's not for me.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 14 February 2005 06:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex I had a similar experience with some Marc Jacobs corduroys I got at Century 21 for what was apparently a bargain ($50 new). Two belt loops have popped off on their ends, and a top corner of each of the back pockets has begun to rip the fabric it's stitched to, in the seat of the pants. The material they make these particular corduroys with is like paper. My mom stitched all of it up (bless) but the back pockets are going again, the material is just too thin.

I got new jeans in london. they've got trouser-style diagonal-slash pockets in the front and deep pockets in the back. there's no logo anywhere on them. i fucking love them.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 9 January 2006 22:35 (twenty years ago)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 9 January 2006 22:36 (twenty years ago)

at the LIBERTY SALE!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 9 January 2006 22:38 (twenty years ago)

i had a shirt from liberty that emma b grudgingly allowed me to return since the sleeves were just a leeetle bit too long (i think emma b was annoyed not at me but directly with my arms themselves; couldn't they THINK themselves longer to accomodate this obviously grebt shirt??)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 9 January 2006 22:40 (twenty years ago)

Levis 527. I'm on my 3rd pair. Loads of people ask about 'em. They're extinct now though (ebay!), but they're a great straight cut, not too baggy, and one of very few makes I know that don't have any 'distressed' shit (so tired!) or general grain in the denim. Just real solid natural denim. Mmmm. Natural.

Mestema (davidcorp), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 11:03 (twenty years ago)

I bought some Eden Park jeans, very dark blue, no frills, just classy, from the Dickins and Jones clising down sale. Does anyone know anything about the brand? Their logo (not on the outside of the jeans, fortunately) is a pink bow tie and a pair of rugby players entangled.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 11:23 (twenty years ago)

I'd love to get some Seven and/or Rock & Republic jeans but of course I can't at the moment. As soon as I have dropped the baby and lost my excess weight, I'm going to buy some. I don't like the low-cut jeans anymore but then again I don't want them hiked up to my midriff either. I think I'll have a hard time finding the pair I want. As is always the case. I'm very picky when it comes to jeans...

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:18 (twenty years ago)

I may never fit in my 26" sevens again. that's probably okay though. Now I need a pair of jeans that highlights my ass rather than creates one for me.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Are Sevens as great as they claim to be? I'm obsessed with jeans.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:41 (twenty years ago)

I like mine a lot, although the bells are probably larger than is fashionable (now that I haven't worn them for a year). I don't like all the distressing and fading that sevens have, but there are one or two finishes that don't have that. Jeans are so tough to recommend because of different body shapes though. You've just got to go try a ton on.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:49 (twenty years ago)

seven seem to be best for fairly slender people.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:55 (twenty years ago)

i was going to revive this thread, and lo and behold...

i have been in desperate need of new jeans, since the H&M cheapies that i bought (as a direct result of this thread), are starting to look a little more rugged than i like. anyway, the H&M here in toronto had NOTHING i liked - all stupid patterned/faded business again. grrrr...

anyway, i lucked out and found some kenneth cole jeans (which i've had before and loved) - dark denim, no pocket/fading weirdness, nice and plain. they fit perfectly, and were only 60 bucks. and then when i got to the cash to ring it in, the total came to about 40 bucks! THEY WERE ON SALE AND I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW! i love that shit.

so hooray! i have new fucking jeans! i'm still looking for some more 'straight leg' ones that i can do the fancy big fold-up thing with. i wonder if club monaco still make those 'selvedge' style jeans with the nice stitching on the inside...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 16:24 (twenty years ago)

For unslender people, I say stick with the cheapies: my favorite two pair are both Lee Dungarees (in two different sizes for choice of arse-age) and the shape is EXACTLY RIGHT which is nothing short of mind-boggling because I NEVER fit in pants.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

I got new jeans (H&M) and I think I hate them... :''''(

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 16:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm not really unslender but I wouldn't describe myself as slender either...should I try Seven?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 16:47 (twenty years ago)

i'm not sure if they do jeans for men.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

(okay)

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 16:55 (twenty years ago)

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 17:02 (twenty years ago)

so i think you would look kind of weird in them, based on what i remember you looking like.

Yeah, he only wears ladies' pants, seriously. Or so he claims, he could be lying about that.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

All the ladies' jeans at Liberty were too expensive. If you're a skinny guy lookin for girls' jeans, get lo-riders with a small waist and usually the butt won't be too baggy. It's always obvious they're not for men, though, because of those two stitches in the back that go down in a V rather than straight across. My friend Michele was like "oh my god it's you! I saw you bend over and I'm like 'who's that chick with the skinny butt?'"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Why would guys look for girl's jeans? Girls have been coveting guys’ jeans forever. Much better fit, yes?

I’ve had a nice run of jean luck over the past few months:

Back in September I scored the last pair of violet low rider boot cut cords from Gap and I’m still heavily smitten with them.

In November, I ventured out into a new Levi’s number, which I THINK is 517 - Non stretch slim fit bootcut. They are actually flared at the ankle about one and a half inches more than the average bootcut. The non-stretch is great too but the best thing is the vintage denim wash with white stitching. Classic. Unfortunately, I already have two major holes in them. One from stabbing myself in the leg with a large serrated knife while I was trying to fix the vacuum cleaner and the other one just appeared. Dog or Cat claw most likely. I’ve looked around for a replacement pair but it seems like they stopped making them.

Last Saturday I found a pair of Mossimo vintage wash (very) low rider flares for $22.50 in the juniors dept at Target. They are just about perfect as far as denim goes. Non-stretch, slim cut to the knees; followed by a nice triangle line to the ankle where the jeans are flared like no jeans I’ve seen since the 1970s. Just beautiful.
