quick advice on paypal and ebay

ok, i'm about to embark on selling my roskilde tickets on ebay, probably. i'm trying to do research on paypal, but it is really confusing.

i'm not a business customer (obviously). so i was a little concerned with the part at the top of the fees schedule that says: "PayPal charges Premier and Business accounts to receive payments. Personal accounts are free, but may not receive credit card payments."

does this mean that people may have a hard time paying for my auction on ebay, or do most people have a paypal noncredit card account these days?

thanks in advance for any tips or suggestions-- the timeline is so short that i don't want to bugger it up!

You have to upgrade the the next stage of account (Premier I think, haven't got it open so I can't tell). Any Paypal payments you receive that are paid by a credit card you are charged 3% on - most ebayers put something to that extent in the text somewhere.

thanks. is it common to pass along the currency transaction fees if someone is paying from a non-UK bank as well?

(sorry, i haven't been a seller on ebay for years, and it's changed since then, so i appreciate the help)

another stupid question. i'm a 'verified' user, so presumably that means i'll actually be able to withdraw the money to my debit card/bank account. does anyone have experience with how long this all takes?

You're specifically not allowed to add on a paypal surcharge - see eBay's statement of 7th June for further details.

AFAIK you can only withdraw money to your bank account if you have a Premier account. It takes about 4 days to go through.

yeah people who pass on paypal fees are scum. the whole point is you're paying for the convenience as a seller. sellers can take it on the damn chin (and i'm a frequent seller)

well, that's why i'm asking first before just doing something that is terrible ebay ettiquette...

thanks for all your tips, any more advice is welcome, i'll sign up to be a premier member now, i suppose...

(also-- i've still got my same ebay account from the US. which is attached to an old email address that i still have, rarely use and is attached to a US paypal account. will i have problems if i ask the person to pay using my UK paypal account so i get the money here? should i set up a new, different ebay account that matches the email that UK paypal has?)

paypal do conversions for you. to be honest their rates aren't great but for foreign transactions it's way cheaper than using non-electronic methods..

If I were you I would change the email address you have registered with eBay rather than set up a new account. That way you retain your feedback record.

ok, only one more question. is it best to time the auction to end during the day when people are at work, or in the evening, when they're at home?

anyone experienced a rise in price based on time of auction?

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

There just isn't a simple answer to that. If you end it during the day you may get office worker buyers with no home access but miss the home-based bidders (and vice versa). Also US and UK bidders are in different time zones so you have to think about that too ie is the item more likely to interest an American than a Briton.

David (David), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I see you're selling tickets so the point about Americans isn't relevant in this case. Hmm.. with those tickets I'd probably go for an evening finish..quite late - younger people with computers at home.

David (David), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I try and end mine on a weekday evening. 10 day auctions are best unless it's v time-sensitive, simply because you give bidders more time to see that the auction exists.

one month passes...
Has anyone else got an email about this class action suit?

I did and already filed -- it's legit, as confirmed by the good folks at Snopes. I'm sure I'll only get, what, 2 cents out of it all -- there's a distinction being drawn between general PayPal users over the past five years (citizens of a number of countries excepted) and those who specifically had some sort of monetary problem or screwup and are therefore entitled to more. I fall into the general user category myself, never had a problem with them.

I did as well.

I can also confirm it's legit because....I errr, worked on the case myself last month. :)

Just not sure what people are going to get out of it - I'm a big Ebay seller and I use it a lot, but I'm not sure what exactly I'm entitled to.

Then kick us down some the cash! What are friends for!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 August 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a long email so if it isn't clear...I was too lazy to read the whole thing for myself.

xpost-haha! Ned, I wish I could.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Sunday, 1 August 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Quick, something we haven't earned but can suck dry! Ned, I'm ashamed of you.

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 1 August 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Hooray! It's the American way!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 August 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Paypal have always been fine with me. I don't feel they owe me money at all.

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 1 August 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Logic and reason tell me they don't owe me anything, but my inflated sense of general entitlement tells me to take every penny I can get.
