War on the right to make a buck off the pain and humilation of others: "Bumfghts" boycott

Paraphrased from the Los Angeles Times:

"Protestors in Westwood ... petitioned Borders Books and other retailers to stop carrying 'Bumfights' videos, arguing that the controversial films incite violence and hate crimes against homeless people."

Title mentioned: "Bag Lady Beating," "Bumfights: Cause for Concern," Bumfights 2: Bumlife", "The Bum Show.Com." Periodically, the Bum Fight producers have appeared in newspapers, one even running for governor of California under the platform that he would be a voice for bums in Sacramento because he knew them well.

Rufus the Stuntbum was also a regular in newspapers because of the tattoo "Bumfight" right above his eyes, induced by the blandishments of alleged celebrity and a case of beer.

Tower Records, which stocks "Bum Hunts: Tales from the Bum Cage" did not respond to attempts to remove the title from its stock.

The state has tried to prosecute the producers of "Bumfights" but continually failed. Three producers were fined $500 for "conspiring to stage an illegal fight."

Legislation is in process that would make it a felony to induce people to eat worms for money, to use promises of cash for the chugging of a bottle of whiskey, or to promise stardom to people who can be declared non compos mentis at a later date.

It is already a crime to shoot "crush" video: videotape of a woman in high heels stepping on pet store-bought rodents duck taped to carpet for the purpose of causing erections in men.

That last part seems strangely particular.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

People go to Borders to buy Bumfight videos?

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't ask me. I never shop at Borders.

George Smith, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Tower Records, which stocks "Bum Hunts: Tales from the Bum Cage" did not respond to attempts to remove the title from its stock.

I have no idea what that means.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

is an attack on a homeless person really a hate crime?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're attacking them because they're homeless, sure.

Comment dits-on...eh... le NA? (Nick A.), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It means they ... ah, I don't know what it means either.

George Smith, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Bumfights are SOOO 2002...

andy, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to think that the Hamburglar came in and started knocking the videos off the shelves while employees walked around with their fingers in their ears singing "La La La, I'm not responding to you."

I threw the Hamburglar in their, because he's sort of sneaky, but in a flashy sort of way.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The whole Bum Fights phenomenon is far more entertaining to me now that I've become acclaimated to the UK usage of the word "bum".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

which is...

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, we've already moved on to videotape of Nick Berg being beheaded and the burned carcasses of mercenary soldiers being dragged around Fallouja.

"Beheadings: Cause for Concern," "Beheadings 2: A Messy Business," "Cadaver Dragging: Threat or Menace?"

George Smith, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

George, the movie's already been made about cadaver dragging -- and Troy did good business.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"TV Guide online reports Mickey Rooney voiced his support this week for a congressional bill designed to impose prison terms for the sale of "crush videos." The actor publicly condemned the porn flicks in which women wearing high-heeled shoes crush rodents and other small creatures under their feet. Rooney first became aware of the videos when he was asked to participate -- as a crushee."

?!?!?!?!?!?!??!!!?

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

You're right -- "Troy" is so high button, though.

George Smith, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It takes a lot of cash to get Brad Pitt to say HECTORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! a lot.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha having seen Troy and Riddick now I want to write/direct an action film in which the only dialog is people yelling the pro/antagonists names passionately

I have always admired the British ability to match our Yankee ingeniuty on every level.

London, England resident Brian Patrick McCann recently was sentenced to nine months in jail after pleading guilty to conspiring to publish a so-called "crush" video that shows a woman wearing high-heeled shoes and a short skirt killing a kitten by stomping on the animal.

By Animal News Center (ANC), 7/9/2003

The presiding judge, who described the video that McCann ordered as "plainly dreadful and depraved... This type of material is to be discouraged and those who involve themselves in this filthy trade of animal cruelty and sexual depravity must expect to be treated seriously," the judge said.

Crush videos have become a multimillion-dollar business, with more than 2,000 titles selling for $ 30 to $ 300 on the Internet.

George Smith, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey this is a good place to ask this!

I found some amazing outsider art done by street people. How can I exploit them for profit?

0r4l R0b3rt5 (ex machina), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't mean to be so graphic here, but when it comes to this sort of thing -- is the idea that someone would watch this type of video (of a small animal being killed) while masturbating? And the violent murder of the critter is tantamount to the "money shot"?
I am just struggling to wrap my head around this.

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ben, there's another weird porn fetish similar to this that someone sent me where a woman in high heels steps on crickets and talks about how gross they are. the film is mostly shot from the crickets' perspective

The Practice did this years ago. The Fonz was into a dentist into women crushing insects or worms. I'm fairly sure there's been a L&O with this stuff too.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i always thought that shit was an urban legend or something. guess i was wrong.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing is an urban legend when it comes to sex/porn.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy shit. The entire concept of the "crush video" is one I could have happily done without. Stomping kittens for cum, wow.
