Green Bay, WI

My sister, who's been living in NYC for a few years, got offered a job in Green Bay. But she's worried it's all football and college kids and no culture. Is there any kind of music/art scene up there? Is it an attractive city? And can you get around without a car?

I ain't gonna lie, there's not much up there. I've been up for a fair amount of gigs, and my one night of bar-going there was much pretty much what you'd expect from a small, football-driven college town. However, in its favor:

--There is a thriving punk rock scene from what I understand, or at least there was. My friends from Milwaukee used to go up there to play shows in basements and at this joint Rock n' Roll High School, but I remember hearing that there was some sort of crack down (Cam??).

--The downtown area was surprisingly nice, and I enjoyed walking around in the morning. There are parts that have that "restored old-world" look that are pretty charming, old movie theaters and such.

--I was playing this bar up there and a late-night taco/burrito stand set up shop right outside. Damn, those tacos were good.

--It's not THAT far from Madison

That's all I got, sorry. Oh, and I wouldn't count on much public transportation in GB.

It's a great place if you LOVE the Packers and food served in tube form, but there's really not much going on there. There are some nice areas around Green Bay, if you like to take weekend getaways, which you'd probably need to do some of. Door County's nice and fairly close. Madison's not too far. Green Bay is sort of like a village, which is great for some people, but not many.

But remember, it takes a village...to create a village idiot.

There's lost of cool chartered sport-fishing on Lake Michigan, though!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Fishing around there is great. That's absolutely true.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Green Bay's closer to Milwaukee than Madison, yes? The former has a good art museum (beautiful new wing) and tons of stuff to do. And also that makes Chicago only 3+ hours away too.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

You should just move to Chicago and commute.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

NA - Green Bay is for sellouts.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

can't believe it took me so long to post that.

there are more than 100,000 people in green bay. it's not like some kind of retarded little village where everyone has favre tattoos or anything. actually, there is more diversity in green bay and the fox river valley than anyone who hasn't been there will ever attest to. i thoroughly enjoy my three or four visits up that way every year.

that having been said,
it's industrial and cold;
ain't no NYC

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

NYC is never industrial and cold, we're all grazing pastures and sunshine here.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I do apologize for my village comment coming off so poorly. I like it there myself as well, but I can see how it wouldn't be suitable for very many. I would disagree with the diversity part, but it's really not a bad place. Just not for everyone is all.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

cold yeah kinda stence
but nothing in my years there
prepared me for THIS

chicago: colder;
madison: much colder yet;
up north: oh my gawd

it's like Cold Miser
doing Jack Frost's polar bear
(all on Gear!'s sad couch)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

NYC's been a lot colder since I moved here. Seriously, I can't remember the city having winters this cold (upstate's another issue entirely, obv.), I think I brought some Chicago with me.

I think Ground Zero should be made into one big pasture. Fuck office space, there's already a glut of it here anyways.

Is that like sport-fucking, Dan?

Btw Matt, I believe you about diversity in Green Bay, but I did not get that impression at all from my four or so visits (which were admittedly limited to the downtown/campus area and clubs/bars/festivals at night).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The potential analogues between sport-fishing and sport-fucking are staggering.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

plus the tackle's similar.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

vs.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

My grandparents ran a tavern in Door County for 20+ years, so I've been to GB a billion times. Green Bay isn't that great in itself - it's a little conservative for me. It's cute like a lot of Wisconsin towns, but I don't think there's much in the way of public transportation.

I'm not so familiar with the arts scene, but what I've seen of 'the arts' outside of Milwaukee & Madison is not so good.

However, if she's an outdoors-y person, the entire area surrounding it is really beautiful. I'd kill to live up there just for the state parks and camping, boating etc because that situation in Illinois pretty much sucks. I just got back from Door County - did a cycling trip there for a week. But DC is only good when it's not tourist season, otherwise it's annoying as fuck.

And if you hate hot summers, it's pretty good.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Washington Island is also a really great place to vacation, in either winter or summer, with summer having more tourists, obviously.

six years pass...

Dunno why but I have a compulsion to bump this thread; being in GB during the Packers recent Super Bowl win was one of the best experiences of my life.

I can see GB is getting kind of a bad rap here, I think because it has a football team everyone is expecting it to be comparable to other football cities. I mean there aren't many good shows/venues, though the local band scene is decent. But the nightlife is generally pretty decent, the bar scene is good, and there are a lot of cool specialty shops. Used to be a great record store (Amazing Records) but the guy packed up and moved to SF or something. It's a good compromise if you don't want to live in a rural area but also don't want to deal with ridiculous traffic and impossible parking, plus it's pretty affordable.

The surrounding area is indeed beautiful; I guess the real knock on the city is that it would absolutely suck to live there if you don't have a car - they have a pretty complex and kinda stupid highway system that leads to everywhere, you can't really get anywhere by walking and the bus system is practically nonexistant

four months pass...

You can live quite well up there if you're the outdoorsy type and enjoy a lot of snow. I mean with computers who gives a flying flag what type of "music scene" there is! You want to see a band Chicago or Milwaukee are a short drive away.

Yes, you will need a car.
