Erikkson's just downed an entire bottle of paracetemol.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

...with david james, leaving the goal unattended and the swiss goalkeeper scores with his goalkick

xpost

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

without xpost works too i guess

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. John Terry's just scored a screamer from the edge of the box - runs the length of the pitch, lifting up his shirt to reveal a t-shirt reading 'Bigger Than Makelele's Cock!' Referee Anders Frisk looks on knowingly.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

and now it's 3 all!!!!!!!! a screamer from paul scholes off a beckham corner!! the press are already thinking up headlines like "paul's goals"

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Some people are on the pitch!

They think it's All Over!

It is Now!

Switzerland win 2-1

de, Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, so I thought it was a 4.00 kickoff. AS you were...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

GYGAX

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'd like to visit Quimborough one day.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that in Fannyshire?

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

GYGAX

Yeah, I tried to see if it could be possible to assemble an ILE fantasy football team, but never got further than this.

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

IT IS NOW!!!

(xpost darn)

Kenneth Wolstenhome (mark grout), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"IT IS NOW!!!"

Loved (hated?) that closeup of wolstenholme's yellow teeth on
the c4 dream team prog...rip kw

de, Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently, following an altercation, ledley King has been confined to the dressing room until he calms down.

___ (___), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

My prediction: much yodelling in the cantons tonight.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Mm, some of the Swiss team are quite cute. < /girl>

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

sven's been sent off
all those warnings about his temper, he should've heeded them

de, Thursday, 17 June 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It really has started now Mark, btw. Nothing to report though.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

If the commentator doesn't get his 'Swiss roll' joke in at least once, I, for one, shall feel cruelly short-changed.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"James looking every inch the Manchester City goalkeeper today"

I can't imagine a worse omen than this comment.
It's like Moore: will he score? Keegan: Yes

de, Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yellow card for Rooney :/

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Wayne's World !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Five Live dude: "It was TOTALLY undeserved, but we'll take it!" (He had just been roasting the entire team for the past few minutes.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

goal, the BBC
commentators screaming loads,
my co-workers: 'huh?'

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

theme song for that goal: "Popular Thug"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

ENGLAND 1 SWISS CUCKOO CLOCKS 0

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Cuckoo! Cuckoo!

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Good to see the lad Owen getting involved.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"He had just been roasting the entire team for the past few minutes.)"

Blimey I didn't see that on the box

de, Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ! roasting - off the field means something totally different !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

gee whiz

de, Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Beckham always seems so calm.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Sven is rubbing off on him. As it were.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Dire. Two worst teams in the tournament.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

apart from you

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

England don't seem that poor e.g. better than the Dutch

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Eeeesh, I can definitely see a goal coming from our fondue-loving chums.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

we've tried being optimistic. we've tried being pessimistic. what's next?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

haha just been watching this at the cinema screen across the road and yeah eng have been really shaky, apart from a 10 min period after the goal, the scars from the france game are still there.

I think we'll have to score another one if we're gonna win this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the Swiss have barely threatened. their best chance came from a free-kick given after the Swiss player tripped over his own foot.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It must be very hot out there. I don't think either lot of pasty Northern Europeans is coping too well...

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"we've tried being optimistic. we've tried being pessimistic. what's next?"

Just be mystic

i'm here all night folks

de, Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

all the talk about what different teams "deserve" makes me think they should just do away with actual goals altogether and get a computer - the Deserve-o-tron, maybe - to just assign points based on control and energy. it would be much more scientific and everyone could rest easy knowing that justice had been done

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

eng haven't been that dangerous either but the swiss have been getting to eng area, crosses are being whipped in and I don't trust that back four to keep a clean sheet. Hope they prove me wrong.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Five Live dude: "It was TOTALLY undeserved, but we'll take it!" (He had just been roasting the entire team for the past few minutes.)

The guy's an asswipe. Chocolate consumption comparisons!!!! WTF? How hackneyed a cliche can you get?

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I fell asleep a few times during the first half.

I think England will get another. England better stop giving free kicks away, shouldn't have dropped Ledley King.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

come on jimmy!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

we've tried being optimistic. we've tried being pessimistic. what's next?

Being realistic would be a first.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

NB: what matters, today, is the win - not the performance (T Venables).

the junefox, Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Chapuisat still playing for fuck's sake. C.J. Jung was still feeling bumps when he first played for la Suisse.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It kinda reminds me of those Italian football matches they used to show on Sunday afternoons.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, but it's dull. Hakan looked the best player on the pitch, and he was about average. The move for the goal was very good, though. The move later on whereby Owen was free on the right-hand side of the are only for England to pass it, all by themselves, all the way back to David James... that was rubbish.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

just when you thought the game was free of masonic taint

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Who let Ryan Stiles referee this match?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and Gygax has come on. Bernd Haas has been red-carded. I really do not get the feeling I'm missing anything.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Beckham always seems so calm.

You'd be too, with a "perfect" family, oodles of cash and secure in the knowledge that you've England in your back pocket.

Is it me, or is Cole the most energetic player in the match?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha Gygax is a big girl's blouse

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Switzerland is kicking England's arse in terms of enthusiasm, it looks like; sheer luck that England's still ahead.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

ROOOOOONEY!!

tk, Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Busy guy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And there's three.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

GYGAX

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, they're already talking about winning the tournament

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

was the second goal as ridiculous as this text description on the guardian that i'm reading makes it out to be?

todd burns (toddburns), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

switzerland ... are, like ... not great competition ... right?

tk, Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

the knocking is every bit as annoying as the hyping. job done. end of.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

But nowhere near as prevalent tho steve

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

professional performance, didn't over exert themselves, got the job done.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

....in the end

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax played a good game ;)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i disagree. i see as much negative criticism and speculation of the team as i do positive, from the same people and outlets half the time. off to pub now tho, cheers everyone!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

cheers steve, you cheeky basket!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I just really want the entire ITV team (apart from Ned Boulting, he funny, and Sir Bobby because everyone loves Sir Bobby) to piss off.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm afraid the sir bobbie is going to die during a commentary. also he has nothing pundity to say, only coachy.

also, they were pronouncing it g-ee-gax, rather than g-eye-gax...
