Is anyone else in London getting naffed off with the bluddy heliciopter hovering above the center for most of today?

You know, I have never been so glad to work in South London as I am right now... I know your pain, though. The worst is when they get the helicopters out when you're trying to *sleep*. One thing I will not miss about Central London. All the damned helicopters!

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, now you come to mention it. i think it's going away now though.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Compared to the drilling that's been taking place all morning, the chopper is soothingly pleasant.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i'm more pissed off by the big band practising downstairs, although it's marginally better than the opera singers from the other day...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

God its right overhead now.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

where in centre is this helicopter of which you speak?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Right above Piccadilly at the moment.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It'll be this.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i like how ilx is like a radar system for flying objects over london!

OMG!!! I JUST SAW IT over gower street!!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

This is connected with today's demo I assume. But it's not as if it was a very big one. Hardly copter-worthy.

(xpost?)

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not in London, but I get so cross when the helicopter is hoovering near our house during the night. it is so infuriating, but I do always have a look to see the mighty beam!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i love helicopters. but i guess our office have better sound proof windows.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

they are there again with their "purple is the international symbol of equality" NONCE-SENSE, grrr.

our windows are quite soundproof, but unfortunately our office isn't air-conditioned thus they are wide open...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

with those purple capes they seemed more like a Harry Potter fan club convention

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Stence OTM. We should.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

closing the windows has cut out most of the helicoptor noise, but not the FUCKING BIG BAND, WHO CAN GO AND EAT A BAG OF DICKS...

can we all come and live with you stence?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if you promise to go to BURRITOVILLE.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

What are the Big Band playing? Please tell me it is all Dambusters and Great Escape in order to put you in the mood for a) great England Euro2004 victories, and b) Sunday morning at Glasto.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

no, it's kind of just stings and stuff, i think they are providing the music to one of the drama plays. if it was tunes all the way through it wouldn't be half as annoying...

and it's more glen miller-y than brass band-y...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i was in the shower the other night and could hear a helicopter hovering very close by, it sounded like it was right above my house for a good minute or two. those damned papparazoo go to such lengths to snap me in the nude.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

OH GOD, THEY'RE ABOVE US NOW, I CAN HEAR THEM!!! ARRRGGGGHHH!!!!!!

Apostrophe Catastrophe (kate), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i think 10 cop cars lining broadway (around the block from where i work) with their sirens on, ALL DAY LONG is more disconcerting.

one of my co-workers asked what was going on, and a cop replied, "TERRORISM."

Responding to the Blackout of August 2003

Many buildings throughout New York City rely on steam to power air conditioning and heating systems. Since 1881, these buildings have been supplied through an intricate steam grid provided by Con Edison, the City's major power company. Con Edison uses six plants in the city to generate steam to supply facilities, like the Amex, that rely on steam generation. These six power plants supply steam over a pipeline network 105 miles long.
During the blackout last week, all six plants were shut down for the first time in the 123 years. There has never been a complete shutdown of steam. Not in the blackouts of 1965 or 1977, nor during the 9/11 crisis two years ago.

While the system is routinely depressurized on an isolated basis for testing and repairs, never has the entire system depressurized and cooled all at once. As a result, the entire system had to be drained before it could be reactivated. This required electrical power and could not be completed until power was returned.

It was obviously a rare and unique circumstance. And despite Con Edison's assurances, to the contrary, they were unable to anticipate such an occurrence in time for the Amex to make alternative arrangements to begin trading earlier on Friday.

When the historic blackout hit on August 14, the American Stock Exchange immediately implemented emergency procedures and set up electrical generators outside the Exchange. By 1:00 a.m. on August 15, the Amex building and trading systems were fully powered and operational.

Con Edison discovered they could not restart steam power for parts of Lower Manhattan, which provides air conditioning to many businesses in the area including the American Stock Exchange. With help from the City of New York Office of Emergency Management, the Amex obtained steam-generation boilers on August 15 so it could resume trading.

With steam generators in place, the Amex was able to reopen the Exchange trading floor, which requires a climate controlled atmosphere to maintain the functionality and integrity of the systems and technology. While forced to conduct a delayed opening, the Amex was able to establish firm closing prices for its products on August 15.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

What are Fathers 4 Justice? They want breakfast in bed on Sunday? Flowers like moms get on Mother's Day?

Maria D., Friday, 18 June 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

they are separated/divorced dads who don't feel they get a fair deal on access etc from the courts.

JtN (who works for an NGO in that field) posted a link when the flour-bombing happened to a v good article basically saying they are doing no one any good at all...
