I'm not talking about female circumcision or anything... just little gold earrings on a one year old. Cruel, frightening and vain - or a cultural difference and we should mind our own beezwax?

Cultural difference? What culture? Other than neds?

not my cup of tea. do they put green eyeshadows on the babies' eyes too?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

My sister was born in a Bombay hospital, and they wanted to pierce her ears before she left. My parents wouldn't let them.

It's funny that piercing the ears of little infant girls seems so barbaric and harsh, yet it's the American cultural norm to circumsize little boys.

Yes.

Cultural difference? What culture?

A lot of Hispanic parents have this done, I've noticed. Not that I've taken a scientific survey or anything.

yet it's the American cultural norm to circumsize little boys.

It's just that, though -- a cultural norm. It's not really cruelty, I don't think.

Harold Media (kenan), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you ever heard the sound of a screaming infant boychild as he's being circumsized?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i'm still traumatized by my circumcision.

For a lot of people the ear-piercing is a way of marking a girl as a girl, officially and for the first time. Sort of a ceremonial gendering. I'm not really into babies with earrings (their faces are so round and chubby, they should use bangles and rings to draw attention downward), but the piercing doesn't strike me as strange or horrifying.

In this area, baby boys with pierced ears seem to be just as common as girls. By the age of about 5, though, piercing is much more common in girls.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

They're about as annoying as those stupid bows people put on baby girls heads, but only cruel if you consider tackiness a form of abuse.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

is this to do with the pirate revival?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

They should pierce babys' noses with big brass rings, then they can tie those damn baby leashes through them.

I had my ears pierced when I was an infant. I don't remember giving a shit. Until I reached the rebellious stage when most American children want to pierce their ears and I went all loco and took them out.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

trepenation, not piercing.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)
