Danny McGrain obviously.

Funny but that recent "Best English Team" ever thing on Channel 4 showed that England's has hardly ever had any decent full backs.

s: paolo maldini (no-one better), jackie mcnamara (when played at right back), gary naysmith (hard working, earnest full-back non-flashy but actually a foot-ball player), lahm (current favourite, alongside setaridis).

d: alec cleland, sergio porrini, gary neville.

also, full-backs are the best players, pbs.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I take back the destroying of Fernando Ricksen. His comedy bad defending and conviction for driving into a lamp-post outside his house, together with a list of ALLEGED misdemeanours including shagging Jordan, pissing off his neighbours by naked trampolining/setting off fireworks, chapping on Alan Thomson's door the night before an Old Firm game at some ungodly hour of the morning to upset him etc, make him a top quality object of humour round these parts.

He's still got a look of pure evil when he tackles, mind.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone should have a look of pure evil when tackling.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but his is SCARY.

wait is a fullback the same as a centreback?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

um no. full-backs = right back & left back (better).

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

ashley cole was stunning in euro 2004. he is my current favourite. i like ireland's stephen carr as well. and who could forget mr.reliability denis irwin?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i see!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

are you still a full back if you go up to attack all the time? (full back sounds like you need to be like.. fully at the back?)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

S: Bridgey. Good enough to get capped while still with us... and it feels like we sold him for far too little. A key part of our sudden transformation from lucky to quality at the back.

Also S: Dodd & Benali. Not particularly great players, but all those many years of unquestionable loyalty while somehow managing to keep us in the top flight do count for a fair amount. Oh, and Simon Charlton, just because.

D: Colleter for fucking Pierluigi Casiraghi's career, van Gobbel for apparently being really good before he came to us and then suddenly... not.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

d: ashley cole.

no, well I dunno, it's a grey area maybe. ashley cole is a full-back but he plays like a wing-back. I guess 'wing-back' is a style of playing full-back.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

who can guess where I play?

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

glasgow?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

you are silly to say negative things about ashley cole.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

he put the shackles on ronaldo like no other (uh, except for those hardened greek defenders)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to play left back. We can avoid the usual gag, I hope - I was a regular first-teamer at school, though never likely to be any better than that.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

ok ok he is a great player but I don't like his impassionate face, like 'you've just done one of the best things ever, be happy OK?!' he is relentless in all he does (running, tackling.) outstanding player at euro 2004 (him Vs. ronaldo ws contest of the tournament, two of the players at the top of their form running chunks out of each other.) but still, too steely for such a flashy player. it's discordant.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think ronaldo got the better of ashley in that game, tbh. I think I said as much when the game ws finished. something like 'ashley cole's performance only bettered by ronaldo actually finally coming to fruition.'

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

no, not glasgow. close.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i did not think that was ronaldo's best game, tho he was quite good. his substitute cameo against russia and also the holland game were splendid.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

if football was like hockey - in that you have revolving substitutes, who come on for short corners then disappear afterwards - ian harte would be the greatest of all full-backs. bring him on to deliver a killer set-piece, then whoosh him off when defensive competence is required.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

'too steely for such a flashy player' => see also my hatred of puyol and others. though, oddly I love deco / zidane. something doesn't tally. (they are expected to be flashy &c. develop this point yrself.) um maybe not his best performance (backtracking like julio here) no but what am I trying to say? oh yes, he was better than ashley. or evens? maybe. anyway, I still don't like ashley cole. fr reasons above.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

puyol / nedved dislike is based roughly on same characteristic shown by both players: humility and persistence. they are so good it irks me that they don't appear to have any of the touch of ego about them. it's very frustrating.

-- cozen (coze...), June 19th, 2004.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i also like glen johnson, mainly for his attacking contributions. i hope there is room for him at chelsea.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, he's good. a right raider.

I liked, dunno why, jamie mcquilken (during his two / three game stint at celtic) and ben thatcher (anonymous, but completion point of a triangle of 'best buys' inc. richard wright / warren barton in cm2 96/97).

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

thuram and lizarazu at world cup 98 - now that was a splendid pair of full-backs.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

yes oh god yes.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

s: cafu, giacinto facchetti.

d: roberto carlos.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be able to applaud Ashley Cole more if he wasn't such diving, cheating basket

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Gary Neville's a good fullback C0zen. He's very solid. I like Winterburn and Dixon - they were uncomprising and very anti-dangle. Good to see Carlos hate on thius thread, and nuff respec for Bixente Lizarazu - I have a fancy to call one of my kids Bixente.

Danny Mills is utter crud, but look a bit like Steve Stone, who looks like Alan Wright, small and underrated ex-Villa left-back. And speaking of left backs - Stuart Pearce (all bow). He loved the Pistols, and hated the dangle. The world's first fully-functioning post-punk defender.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Lizarazu too. I used to play right-back, you know. Occasionally, I would get a tackle in.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 19 August 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Search
Danny McGrain - esp when he was getting on a bit and used all manner of cunning old fox tricks to stop young whippersnappers from legging it past him.
Jackie McNamara if he's on the right side of the pitch.
Maldini: Legend.
Possibly Carlos, when he stops fannydangling.

Destroy
Every Rangers full back in the last 5 years except for Arthur Numan. The Neville sisters (though I'm prepared to admit Gary's improved in recent seasons). Ash Cole.
Fuck it, Arthur Numan as well.

Oh and Gary Fucking Holt, though he's not really a full back (Bertie Vogts take note!).
