Fire!

There's a fire in the top flat three doors along. I walked past it five minutes ago and noticed nothing, then a minute later I heard screaming and sirens. There were flames leaping out of the window and people crying in the street. I've come indoors again because I feel like such a fucking rubber necker. I'm not too worried about my flat because it's on the ground floor and the wind's blowing the other way, but the roof beams have just caught so it'll travel my way, if more slowly.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't recall ever being this close to a house fire. I've seen smoke from a distance and the aftermath of fires, but never one blazing so close.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Just enough time to take out a new improved totally ace insurance policy then?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Insurance policy renewed a couple of months ago. Glad I got my own and am not relying on shitty factor insurance.

I've put my photos, passport and jewellery box in a bag, just in case. I hope this is a stupid over-reaction, but better safe than sorry, eh?

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Cripes, Madchen, I love your flat!

I bet it was a chip pan. I hope everyone's OK.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Be thankful that the Celtic match is at Pittodrie not Parkhead in half an hour so there is some chance of the fire brigade actually getting there...

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed. The fire brigade were there before I realised what was going on - double quick. I don't know where the nearest fire station is, but I'm guessing it's quite close.

The flames aren't leaping out of the window any more, but there are huge clouds of yellow smoke billowing out.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, from the front it looked under control, but from the back it's scary. There's a huge heat haze coming off the roof and all you can hear is the banging and cracking of the roof beams. I've been talking to my 3rd floor neighbour, who is getting very edgey.

(somebody has left their washing on the line at the back - that'll smell lovely when they bring it in)

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I can hear the banging and cracking from my flat.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a fire station just across the other side of Celtic Park from you - not far from where I usually park my car on matchdays. As I said, if there had been a match on, the traffic just now would have been horrendous and getting from there to yours could have taken a LOT longer.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

: (((

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, totally. I was down on Duke Street half an hour ago and there was hardly any traffic - just people out walking and enjoying the sunshine.

A fireman has just emerged carrying a fluffy cat. I am assuming (hoping) this means there are no people in there that need saving.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG, will you tell Ally I might not be over to watch the marathon - depends what happens here. Ta.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I commented to my third floor neighbour that it looked like it was under control and she pointed out the leaping flames reflected in the window of the flat over the road.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got his answering machine--I'll try again, in a minute.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to go to the pub to watch said Celtic match. Take care, Madchen, I hope the wind stays in the other direction from your house x

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Ailsa

Flames now leaping from roof of flat next door (one flat closer to my block). Press photographer has arrived, police interviewing people on the street.

There's no way to get a fire engine around the back - it's a closed-in block of tenements, so they have to get what equipment they can through the close to the drying green at the back.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

They're now spraying the whole corner of the block with water from a raised platform (3 high-ceilinged storeys up - not sure how many feet/metres that is). There are lumps of lead falling from the roof into the street and people are starting to move the cars that were parked in front of that block. We all got moved away by the police, so I'm back indoors for the moment.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought he might be upstairs but it's just as well I didn't bother checking because he is out with his lesbian.

he was very concerned sounding but I put his mind at ease, that you were not in any immediate danger. perhaps I understated it, too much, and he won't even telephone, to check you're okay. sorry!

he said to call him if something happens, I think. I don't know if he meant something other than what already has or what.

crosspost

12 or 13 metres or so.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The flat next door to the one where the fire was has now totally gone up and there are mini explosions coming out of the windows. There are five fire engines working on it now.

I'm pretty sure the fire won't get into my flat. The absolute worst that can happen is the flats on the 3rd floor in my block or the one next door will go and then there would be tons of water damage, but it's still four flats away from that. I think (hope) they'll put it out before that happens.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking a couple days ago about starting a thread asking who has been around fires, not that that's exactly what this thread is. (I hope that doesn't make me somehow responsible for the fire.) The last house I lived in with my parents was next to a funeral parlor, and there was a fire there once. I woke up knowing something was wrong, but not quite what. It must have been the flickering light from the flames. It's a good thing that our house wasn't on fire, because by the time my parents got themselves organized and made it downstairs, they would probably have been dead. The funeral home lost at least one hearse, as well as a couple corpses, as I recall.

I also lived in the top floor of an apartment building and watched a couple buildings across from me while they were on fire (with fire fighters up on a nearby roof). Actually, I benefited nicely from that fire*, since the buildings were torn down soon after, giving me a view of Rittenhouse Square, when I was paying a fraction of the rent most people with that privilege were paying.

*Which I don't mind thinking too much, since as far as I know, nobody was injured.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

All the flats west of the one where it started have gone up to the end of the block (that's the direction the wind is blowing in) but only one flat to the east (my way). It's only the top floor that's burning, but all ones below will be inundated with the horrible brown stuff that is also cascading down the front of the buildings.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Ailsa, I hope you are enjoying the match, with lots of good beer.

the bellefox, Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Pinefox, priorities??

The police cordon is now up to the path to my front door.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

My God, this is starting to sound like a conflagration worthy of the national news. And Oor Luce is the middle of it! Are you sure they're using water?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

:(

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

'is in the middle of it'

Note to authorities: I am not suggesting Madchen is a twisted firestarter.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

First bullets in your window, now fires next door. They're closing in, Madchen.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

'bullets in your window'?!

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

forget it, jock, it's dennistoun.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

denistoun?

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

denislaw

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

why did you type "denistoun?"

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

momentarily, I forgot how to keep my mouth shut.

will this be on the news?

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

you type with your tongue. that is newsworthy.

come back, madchen.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Two ns.

There is a TV crew, yes. Still wearing Access All Areas passes for the Great Scottish run. Did you see me in the Daily Record yesterday as well? (Alba, if you can scan it for me please do - don't have my own copy)

It isn't half noisy out there. I have a headache.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Three, I mean.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Bullets through my window

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

You have three headaches? Jesus, can't someone go help this woman?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

cookie has a copy of yesterday's record.

actually, he has copies of lots of yesterday's records.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Did he? Good. What do I look like - did they use the one of me unhingeing my jaw to get the burger in my mouth?

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

nick and sink, on that thread, are great.

I think you look just fine and cookie looks as insane as in reality.

the write-up is by one "tam cowan".

I think he says they have shitty tables but he might have just making it up, as he went along.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

A woman has just walked past me, sobbing. I think she'd just got home to find the devastation.

(They did have shitty tables, with great big cracks in. The candlewax poured through and ruined Dave's friend's shoes and trousers.)

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

that's what you get, for being friends, with dave.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(I already made an "ad-lib" joke, in case you were wondering)

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

oh my goodness! I think you'll need a stiff drink once this is all over, and the reality sets in...

Vicky (Vicky), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Hehe, Madchen comes to the aid of hunky firemen by refilling their drinking water bottles in her kitcen :)

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I was wondering how long it would take for the firemen perving to start ;)

Hope it all works out okay for you.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The firemen are not perving, they are being very professional.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I was trying to recreate the spirit of the Mastermind thread with Sinker.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

somewhere high in the desert near a curtain of a blue
the sane man skirts under the wind
but down here in the city of the lime lights
the fans of santa ana are witherin'
and you can’t deny that living is easy
if you never look behind the scenery
it's showtime for drag lines
and bedlam is dreamin' of rain

when the hills of los angeles are burning.....
palm trees are candles in the murder wind
so many lives on the breeze
even the stars are ill at ease
and los angeles is burnin'...

omar little, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 00:45 (eighteen years ago)

Survivor has an atmospheric song named "Santa Ana Winds" that refers to a disastrous woman.

omar little, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

yeah ok, the Santa Anas. The one time in my life I visited LA (last year) it really struck me that the climate is basically desert- my friend kept her screenless windows open (no bugs!?) etc. When I read about Atlanta's water problems I can't fathom how LA and SD get their freshwater. The whole place boggles my midwestern brane.

anyway, best of luck everybody. The pictures I've seen are pretty whoa.

brownie, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

i already had my fire since i live at the base of ol griffith park which went up in flames a few months ago (my place smelled like smoke for a week after that and since i lived just north of the evacuation line i had to get outta there).

Famous Raymond Chandler quote, from "Red Wind"

There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge.

And Pasadena's feelin' it now, from the Arrowhead fire.

nickn, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

When I read about Atlanta's water problems I can't fathom how LA and SD get their freshwater.

They steal it from up north. Not actually steal, but use way the hell more than their share. It's the desert! You don't need a lawn if you have to water it twice a day! If you want a lawn, move to Kentucky or something...

A couple of friends had to evacuate from Encinitas. They were supposed to finalize the purchase of a house today. Both homes are in the evacuation zone.

I'm so glad I moved this summer.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

A couple of friends had to evacuate from Encinitas.

i'm envisioning the owners coming back to lou's records and finding one gigantic mound of melted vinyl.

towga had to evacuate this morning as far as i can tell from bulletins i've read from sd county government sites. still can't get in touch with her, still haven't heard from her. makes me anxious and angry for a lot of different reasons.

They steal it from up north. Not actually steal, but use way the hell more than their share. It's the desert!

It's more complex than outright theft (you could make a case for Central/Imperial Valley agricultural water subsides being more of a negative affect than the Sprawl), but a few basic changes could make a difference. I can't recommend Cadillac Desert enough.

Also, SoCal can adjust to drought conditions extremely well. Droughts have happened here before and will happen again - I don't recall Georgia ever having a drought.

Walking around here today has been a strange shift after coming back from Hawaii. It's not unfamiliar -- there was plenty of ash, haze blocking the sun and the smell of smoke in past years such as 2003 -- but it's still jarring.

Good friend Stripey just passed on the word that yesterday her favorite area hiking spot, Whiting Ranch, burned up. She's quite upset and I don't blame her. I went out that direction with her some months back -- here's my photos -- and now who knows when it'll be like that again.

Couple of coworkers aren't in today -- they're from north San Diego County.

1 directly as a result of the fire, 5 in fire-related circumstances (deaths by accident at evacuation facilities, for instance).

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

Although there's also this kinda freaky incident, which almost sounds like an echo of a double-killing in the area from some months back.

I didn't realize this would hit so close to home here, but a friend of mine who lives in Edmonds is hosting her grandmother, age 87, who had escaped her home (if it's still there now :( ) in Ramona in SD county. She managed to fly up here to get away from the situation. Here's the txt I got from my friend:

grandma's at the house relaxed now and happy she's alive. my mom is flying in from boise tonight to see her and make sure she's comfortable while i'm off to school. it was really hard this morning. I freaked out because grandma was missing this morning. WHERE IS SHE? I found her outside in the rain just standing there with her arms out. she's really old and shouldn't even be keeping her arms raised. obviously she shouldn't be outside in cold wet weather she's not used to. so i brought her in and she was just saying SO FULL OF LIFE. RAIN. THIS IS ALL I WANT. ITS NOT ASH ITS RAIN RAIN RAIN. I LOVE YOU. she started breaking down in tears. I ESCAPED HELL. THIS IS HEAVEN. i started crying too. i brought her inside. she's fine now.

I didn't bother asking if she knew how her grandmother's house was. It's pointless to ask that now.

Laurel, Thursday, 25 October 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

this shit is not cool

gabbneb, Thursday, 25 October 2007 04:29 (eighteen years ago)

All still grinding away in OC -- the fire is starting to reach the Cleveland National Forest, and if it breaks out fully there, all the smoke in the air so far will have been as nothing in comparison.

Today has been even crappier already -- at least yesterday I could see the sun rise. The smoke is so thick it's essentially fog-level visual quality now. Aside from one on-campus errand and a quick run to get some lunch to go I plan on hunkering down in the library all day at work.

This map is the best one for tracking the OC/Santiago fire -- if you click on the satellite or hybrid option, you can see just how much mountainous terrain was involved. I can see a good chunk of this from UCI on a good day and it'll be nothing but black ash when the smoke clears.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 October 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

so we had been planning on buying a house or condo in the west-of-5 area later this year, or renting until conditions became a little more favorable. i wonder what all this is going to do to the housing / renting market and how this is going to break down across each geographical and socioeconomic "bracket"
