Chloe Sevigny justifies graphic sex scene in ‘art’ film, The Brown Bunny
NEW YORK (AP) — Actress Chloe Sevigny says a notoriously graphic sex scene in The Brown Bunny, which opens Friday in New York and Los Angeles, will make “more sense” after audiences see it for themselves.
“I knew people would not understand it,” Sevigny told The Associated Press. “It’s a shame people write so many things when they haven’t seen it. When you see the film, it makes more sense. It’s an art film. It should be playing in museums. It’s like an Andy Warhol movie.”
The explicit oral-sex scene, which has garnered all sorts of attention since the movie’s premiere, occurs between Sevigny and Vincent Gallo, who also wrote, directed and edited the film. Gallo shot the scene using remote cameras while he and Sevigny were alone in the room.
“This particular scene is the most complex, it’s the most evolved thing that I’ve ever done in my life,” Gallo said at a news conference during the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.
Sevigny, 29, has an eclectic acting resume that includes Kids, Boys Don’t Cry and American Psycho. She can next be seen in the HBO drama series Big Love and Woody Allen’s Melinda and Melinda, scheduled for release next year.
“I’ve always made films that are sort of avant-garde-y or whatever you call it,” she told the AP last week at the opening of the Hard Rock Cafe inside Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Mashantucket, Conn.

well, it is an art film.

amateur!!st, Monday, 23 August 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

So it should be playing in museums.

Huck, Monday, 23 August 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"it’s the most evolved thing that I’ve ever done in my life", this really doesn't mean anything does it?

It's an avant-garde-y film.

Bumfluff, Monday, 23 August 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

from New City Chicago:

Vincent Gallo's trekking westward, driving himself and a print of his notorious "The Brown Bunny" to word-of-mouth screenings across the country. When a rough cut debuted at Cannes 2003, the infamy began with a climactic fellatio scene involving Chloe Sevigny, followed by the inaccurate statement that it was "universally derided" and the proclamation that it was "the worst ever in competition" by Roger Ebert (who gave three stars to Gallo's debut, "Buffalo 66").

Gallo, a relentlessly loquacious obsessive who often speaks whatever colorful image comes into his head, rejoined with "an unremovable black magic curse" on Ebert's colon. Gallo called Ebert a "fat pig"; among Ebert's several rejoinders was one adapting a quip by Winston Churchill, "It is true that I am fat, but one day I will be thin, and he will still be the director of 'The Brown Bunny'."

Last Monday, Gallo's final cut was shown to Chicago critics and the duo met immediately afterward in the screening room with cameras rolling. A couple hours later, Gallo would be answering questions at a Landmark Century Q&A. A half-hour grew into an hour and longer as the film's publicist and distributor anxiously listened for any sounds of a scuffle inside. Both emerged with quiet smiles, seeming to have buried the scalpel. What the self-professed "elitist" and conservative Republican shared with the notably left-leaning Ebert stays behind closed doors... at least until the movie opens at the end of the month.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Vincent Gallo does *not* make me glad that I'm a man.

"brown bunny" = new twee euphemism for poop

It's, like, a little bit of poo. "Drop a big load there, Jed?" "No, just a little brown bunny."

Harold Media (kenan), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the film itself is kind of twee. doesn't it have something to do with a series of girlfriends all of whom have the names of flowers?

amateur!!st, Monday, 23 August 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Great, now I know how it ends.

mcd (mcd), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Gallo's vocals on his record "When" are quite twee-ish. One song is entitled "Honey Bunny" another is "I Wrote This Song for the Girl Paris Hilton." It's all really good.

herbert hebert (herbert hebert), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Amateurist, yes. All the girls have flower names. I hear he's very "sensitive" in it, but in this very self-serving way -- he plays a guy so charming that he only has to say "please," and women he's never met before will agree to drive across the country with him. The wounded-little-boy act. The whimpster, sounds like. It's the feel-emo hit of the summer.
