So did "Ghost Ship" suck or what?

I just rented it. Such a great idea for a creepy, atmospheric film and they just dropped the ball. And the little Kate Moss ghost girl shows us the whole story in a minute and a half with a pounding Nine Inch Nails rock video montage, one of the clumsiest devices I've ever seen in a film.

The first gory scene was pretty boss, though.

Not as scary as "Ghost Dad".

Andy go rent the film Below, which was released the same weekend and is spooky as hell (haunted sub movie).

The captain with the bogus "pepperidge fahms" accent did mention the Mary Celeste, which is a genuinely creepy ghost ship true story. I don't think they've done a film treatment of her, have they? (I just said "her" about a ship like I do it all the time.)

Copycat poster though, eh?

andy, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Thought it was an above-average Full Moon Entertainment-type film, until the "it ain't over" ending. Wish horror movies would let a sequel come organically (make your own jokes) from the plot, rather than let the last three minutes of a film negate the previous hour and a half. Second the "Below" recommendation, too - decently done, good "underwater haunted house" atmosphere.

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

that ghost ship intro is indeed boss.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

That first scene is the illest EVER

i third or fourth that emotion, if only the rest of the movie was half as good. what a dour, unappealing cast tho

eighteen years pass...

this is showing at local art theatre as a 'cult classic', showing on 35mm. does this movie actually have a following? I've never heard ANYBODY talk about it. wondering if it's the only 35 mm film they could afford this week.

Looks like it turned a modest profit:
Budget: $20 million
Box office: $68.3 million

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 18 October 2022 17:00 (three years ago)

seems like art cinema has defined cult classic as "one of our panel members really likes this bargain bin film"

stank viola (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 18 October 2022 17:01 (three years ago)

I remember an early shock scene followed by boring boilerplate.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 October 2022 17:02 (three years ago)

how cahiers did it iirc

not so sure about "cult classic", but it does seem to have picked up some traction among horror fans

While critical response to Ghost Ship was varied upon its theatrical release, many contemporary critics and film fans alike praised its elaborate opening murder sequence. Website Bloody Disgusting listed Ghost Ship's opening massacre as #13 in their list of "The Top 13 Kills in Horror Movie History," while ComingSoon named the scene one of the greatest opening sequences in horror film history.

this same theatre also shows High Tension just about every year, which does have such a following, but the host always says COME IN BLIND, don't read ANYTHING coming in, and I'm like..it's deux ex machina, don't worry, nobody will see it coming and everybody will be angry when it happens

There was a 2009 film that I found flawed but entertaining: Triangle

It's one of those repeating time-loop things that were in vogue for awhile after Memento, Donnie Darko, etc. but I found it more fun than Ghost Ship

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 18 October 2022 18:36 (three years ago)

xp yeah, the original is a Val Lewton production ... it's better than most 1940s horror movies and only 69 minutes long

if you're hunting for nautical horror Harbinger Down (2015) is decent ... it gets a few extra points for having Lance Henriksen as the crusty skipper + practical creature effects allegedly in the style of The Thing

Brad C., Tuesday, 18 October 2022 18:45 (three years ago)

lol all i've ever heard about this movie is that it has some wild opening scene and that the rest is awful

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 19 October 2022 00:22 (three years ago)

still 60+ seats available less than an hour out.

they only seat about 100.
