The first gory scene was pretty boss, though.

The captain with the bogus "pepperidge fahms" accent did mention the Mary Celeste, which is a genuinely creepy ghost ship true story. I don't think they've done a film treatment of her, have they? (I just said "her" about a ship like I do it all the time.)
― andy, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)
this film is almost entertainingly terrible

this is showing at local art theatre as a 'cult classic', showing on 35mm. does this movie actually have a following? I've never heard ANYBODY talk about it. wondering if it's the only 35 mm film they could afford this week.

Looks like it turned a modest profit: Budget: $20 millionBox office: $68.3 million

seems like art cinema has defined cult classic as "one of our panel members really likes this bargain bin film"

I remember an early shock scene followed by boring boilerplate.

not so sure about "cult classic", but it does seem to have picked up some traction among horror fans
While critical response to Ghost Ship was varied upon its theatrical release, many contemporary critics and film fans alike praised its elaborate opening murder sequence. Website Bloody Disgusting listed Ghost Ship's opening massacre as #13 in their list of "The Top 13 Kills in Horror Movie History," while ComingSoon named the scene one of the greatest opening sequences in horror film history.

this same theatre also shows High Tension just about every year, which does have such a following, but the host always says COME IN BLIND, don't read ANYTHING coming in, and I'm like..it's deux ex machina, don't worry, nobody will see it coming and everybody will be angry when it happens

There was a 2009 film that I found flawed but entertaining: Triangle
It's one of those repeating time-loop things that were in vogue for awhile after Memento, Donnie Darko, etc. but I found it more fun than Ghost Ship

xp yeah, the original is a Val Lewton production ... it's better than most 1940s horror movies and only 69 minutes long
if you're hunting for nautical horror Harbinger Down (2015) is decent ... it gets a few extra points for having Lance Henriksen as the crusty skipper + practical creature effects allegedly in the style of The Thing

lol all i've ever heard about this movie is that it has some wild opening scene and that the rest is awful
