Oh God I'm So Knackered vs. I'm Absolutely Full of Energy And Feel I Could Run a Marathon!

My experience of talking to work ppl and starting with the dull but inevitable "Hi, how are you?" is that the 2nd fave response after the equally dull and similarly inevitable "Fine" is "I'm completely knackered" or "I'm really not at all awake today" or somesuch. After this kind of exchange in the pantry a moment ago, I asked my colleague why it is that you never, ever hear someone respond "I'm absolutely bursting with energy and raring to go!" or somesuch. Well, why don't you? It must happen sometimes!

My first thought was "coz ppl would punch them".

There's that, plus if you say you're full of energy more may be expected of you above and beyond what a "knackered" person might be expected to do. A friend of mine from here who worked in Oxford for a few months claimed it was easy for Canadians to get jobs in England because it was assumed we would work harder. Maybe he just made that up, though. It did come from the guy who thought so little of Sam and Frodo's arduous ascent of Mt Doom that he said, "it was like watching old people shop".

if you say you are full of energy you are sort of admitting that you dont go out enough, or that when you do go out, you dont stay up late enough.

I just don't ever really feel that enthused at work. Plus it's always early!

your friend is right. I am English and work in Oxford. In theory.

I always use the stock Mike Dickin response, i.e. "How are you?" "My health is not in question!"

"I'm okay, I've been thinking about Zeno's Paradox, I still don't get it"

Does anyone over 20 ever say/feel the latter?

Probably Fridays around 4:30-5 pm, or on the weekend. Or when they're on vacation.

I'm always tired at work. So are all my co-workers, except for my boss who I swear is on speed right now as I can hear her talking at a million miles a minute and she always tromps around the office like walking at a normal speed just isn't gonna cut it and she SHOUTS on the phone and I just heard her exclaim with glee, "OH MY GOSH YOU GUYS WE DID SOMETHING SOMETHING SOMETHING" and even though her door is closed I can hear every word she's saying with absolute clarity (sorta... I guess I just didn't care about the OH MY GOD WE DID SOMETHING SOMETHING part so I didn't pay attention).
