and feel guilty for perusing the net all day, what else can you do?

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i literally have nothing to do right now.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I have plenty to do, I just am avoiding it because I hate it.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

me too.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I have lots to do but I'm not doing it as there is no management to be seen and hasn't been for three days.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The week's been busy at many points but now I'm all (temporarily) caught up. So now I have nothing to do, yay!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

wanking at work - is it good/bad/right/easy/nice/etc?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really have anything left to do today except (wo)man reception. I figure that next week I'm going to be busting my ass though, so I can't be bothered to feel guilty.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Having not much to do has been my summer basically. It's soul-destroying. I guess you can always sort out a draw for the hell of it or water the plants or doodle.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. I have re-labelled all my files this week.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i will sort through my inbox.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Archel's point about looming work is well noted -- in a few more weeks I'll look back on the lackadaisical me of the present with complete envy. So frankly, I'm happy to be doing nothing!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I have very little to do today. I could do a whole lot more, but that would be overstepping my (self-imposed) bounds.

Huck, Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i have calls to make but i really dont want to, especially when i can hide behind the less imposing veil of email.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just listening to Teenage Shutdown compilations on headphones pretending to work by emailing people and working out my budget for the month... afternoon's still going painfully slow today.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

what else can you do?

Last time I was in this situation, I got the hell out of the company, and it was shuttered six months after I left. The reason I didn't have anything to do was because the owner was bleeding the company dry, it wasn't a very well kept secret and our customers were going the other way fast. So...get your CV updated? I guess not all companies have this happen to them, though.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Adam, you should fax me.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Or better yet, I'll fax you. I have a radical press release that I think you need to see.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll send faxes to anyone who wants 'em. Email yr number to naamme @ yahoo dot com.

n.a. (Nick A.), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i have no idea what its like to have an office job!

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

LUCKY!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

you are fortunate.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i feel like im missing out on a lot. like water-cooler talk, and office politics, and boning secretaries, etc.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I've found a new job, slamming the door of the capture room to encourage people to close it of their own accord, so fra only one person has taken the hint.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't imagine how awful office jobs must have been before the internet. It would have driven me insane.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The internet has been a great way to alleviate boredom, but before we had PCs in the office, the whole work environment was different. We used to go to the bar next door and drink a pitcher when we were bored.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

We have a water cooler but no one gathers around it to gossip. Also, there are no males in my office so there are no skeezy sexual exploits. Actually all of my co-workers are quite square and like working. Last Thursday we had a power outage for about 3 hours where we couldn't do any work and they were SOOO BORED. I was having a blast taking a nap under my desk.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i used to work in an office where i was completely alone with a computer that didnt have the internet.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, what's the point of a computer without the internet?

I will be alone at work tomorrow, I don't ILX from work...I weened myself of it, and I can't let the rot set in again...but tomorrow is going to be a long day :(

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i need to ween myself off it. in fact i need to ween myself off it when at home doing work too. ilx = schedule rotter.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't imagine how awful office jobs must have been before the internet.

At one job where they hadn't yet set up the computer and didn't yet have work for me to do, I read a phonebook [1] for want of something more entertaining to do.

[1] Scads and scads of characters, but not much in the way of plot.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I have nothing to do at home today. I've spent the morning retagging my mp3s.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"I can't imagine how awful office jobs must have been before the internet. It would have driven me insane...."

They used to have ashtrays at their desks and three martini lunches! And you could chase your secretary around the office... It wasn't so bad.

andy, Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone ever felt like this for 6 months? Because I have!

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell yeah. Guts required to look for actual interesting (although almost certainly lower-paying) job.

My favourite way of non-net time-passing: download PG Wodehouse (or indeed, literature by a number of other authors) books from Project Gutenberg and spend the afternoon quietly giggling to yourself and getting square eyes from scrolling in Notepad.
