Many of the Konfabulator widgets are pretty useless, but I use Gmail check, BBC Radio Tuner, and Sputnik all the time.

No. This article gets into the nitty gritty, but basically:

Konfabulator = (Custom XML format) + (Custom JavaScript engine)

Dashboard = (HTML & CSS) + (JavaScript in Apple's Web Core routines)

Dashboard can take advantage of a LOT more OS-level stuff and in the long run will be a Pretty Big Deal.
