Country music, traditionally thought to be on the right-wing side of the culture war, has begun to incorporate hip hop elements--or, rather, to self-consciously and somewhat pathetically ape the corrosive, materialistic playa' machismo of the imagined ghetto while pretending to maintain an adversarial stance.

Nice.

I also liked the bit about "Post Rock Country." "Post rock" = "limestone."

Harold Media (kenan), Sunday, 29 August 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i noticed the "post rock country" bit, too. tortoise-meets-garth brooks?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 29 August 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

what does kaus irrationally hate more, hip-hop or John Kerry?

Symplistic (shmuel), Sunday, 29 August 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Either way, this was yawnsome.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Sunday, 29 August 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

gabbneb, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

has a hang-up about economic equality rhetoric

gabbneb, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

I have a habit of getting pissed off and emailing Kaus about some idiotic thing he does, usually his clenched and clueless antagonism toward any poor people who are not white, about once every third year. He always writes back. He's terrible and I dislike him intensely and cannot for the life of me figure out why Mike Kinsley ever respected anything about him, and it takes a lot to make me question my liking of Mike Kinsley.

I like him more than Kinsley, whose contrarianism has always seemed less explicable to me

gabbneb, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

Kinsley's not much of a contrarian, I don't think! I like him better as a sort of intellectual ombudsman -- he's good at sorting out the logic behind everyone's rhetoric, and as a fan of logical fairness, I enjoy watching him do it. (Also he does it with people's word usage and grammar, which is similarly up my alley.)

nabisco, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, i often think his logic is wrong and his certainty about it kinda infuriating. at least kaus never makes a pretense at objectivity.
