Ladies and gentlemen, I believe I have a new favourite movie. I may even watch the American version tommorow.

Huck, Monday, 30 August 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The final action shot and its aftermath is some kinda perfect genius.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, i'm glad huck started this thread because there are some questions about the new dvd that need addressing.

1) can you watch the entire original unedited version on the n american dvd?
2) did they fancy up the special effects?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

the only real flaw with this movie is that the lady was totally underused

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i got the hong kong dvd for about $10 on eBay.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

you can also get it in many chinatowns.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

but i wanna know if i have to

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

why did buena vista buy this movie and cut it up and promo it for like two years and then release it straight to video?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

similar questions re: miramax and hero

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The version I rented from R0g3r5 had the "Original Chinese" and "American Theatrical Release" versions. I watched the OC of course. But there were no subtitles for the bloopers at the end, so I put on the last scene of the American version, but they didn't have any bloopers. I was very disappointed. I'm sure I missed out on some incredible laughs.

Huck, Monday, 30 August 2004 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently the weinsteins had "hero" recut and tarantino pressured them to release it as-is.

i think "shaolin soccer" got a v. brief, v. limited theatrical run, like in one theater in hollywood and one in new york or something.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

was jackie chan the pioneer of the HK blooper reel?

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

well they dropped the "ball" on that one! (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Has it still got the hilariously bad subtitles? I love this film, a friend got an import on DVD back in early 2003.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the same semi-literate dude has been subtitling HK movies since 1973

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"i am giving you a damn!"

(--from the subtitles to heroic trio)

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"I am damn unsatisfied to be killed in this way." -- Holy Weapon

"Fatty, you with your thick face have hurt my instep." -- Pedicab Driver

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

oh dont start me on these.. I'll have a giggling fit.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

When the credits rolled and it said "written and directed by Stephen Chow" I was like, "hey, I know that guy! Er, no, that's Spencer, not Stephen. And I don't really know him at all."

Huck, Monday, 30 August 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG I JUST WENT TO A SHAOLIN TEMPLE AND GOT BAKKED!

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Jet Li's Fong Sai Yuk has some winners.

"It is shit to be chased by the dogs!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Beware! Your bones are going to be disconnected." -- Saviour of the Soul

"Beat him out of recognizable shape!" -- Police Story 2

(rinkworks.com I love you)

"How dare you join a secret society!" - Fong Sai Yuk

I got my copy of Shaolin Soccer direct from HK also... I heart this film a lot and I can't bear to think how messed up the US DVD is.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 30 August 2004 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

saw it at the Capitol Hill Internet Cafe, which shows movies on Mon and Tue nites, about two months ago. brilliant, must get a copy of it (Seattle's Chinatown is a half-mile from work, yay!)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 30 August 2004 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i think "shaolin soccer" got a v. brief, v. limited theatrical run, like in one theater in hollywood and one in new york or something.

shaolin soccer played in SF theaters for about 3 years. the local chinese theater was recently pressured to stop showing Hero now that is in widescale release after about 2 years.

no one's answered my question yet about exactly how messed up it is!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 30 August 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I was wondering about that as well, since I saw a used copy of the US dvd for $5 on Saturday!

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the messed-upness can be taken as granted, then multiplied.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

As I said, the one I watched was called "original chinese version" or something similar, and it also feature "us theatrical release version" so, like, draw conclusions.

Huck, Monday, 30 August 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I should have bought it.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

brian badlbreath (badwords), Monday, 30 August 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaolin Soccer was the best film I saw in New York, and was top hole fun. best football film ever.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Great film. I picked up a region zero copy for 10 quid in some weird movie market in Camden's 'Electric Ballroom' club one day. All the movies were HK or Japanese films, so I assume I have the OC version (with subtitles).

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 3 September 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Could this be the one movie ILX can agree on? I'm glad. If they showed this movie and the RNC, there would be no more war.

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i love how whenever he sees the mainland girl on the street, man tat ng sings to her in mandarin... it's soooooo cute!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 3 September 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
I watched the original american version and it was OK.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 16 June 2005 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I just watched this last night! But I fell asleep before the final showdown w/Team Evil. Should I watch it again? Is the Chinese version better?

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 16 June 2005 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The UK version is worstest, dubbing and a significant chunk cut out (unless that's the US version). UK DVD has both on it.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i love the shaolin soccer.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
Watched the "original chinese" this weekend - the singing! the fire in the eyes! the tai chi steamed buns! I put this and Kung Fu Hustle right back on the Netflix queue. Worth buying? - I'm thinking yes.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

We saw Stephen Chow in the pub on Friday. Quite bizarre!

Pete (Pete), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

wow which pub?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Awww, I just watched this a few weeks ago. Endearing.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 20 March 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

The UK version is worstest, dubbing and a significant chunk cut out

The actual translation was hilariously bad too.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Monday, 20 March 2006 17:36 (twenty years ago)

dyao, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 12:29 (sixteen years ago)

yall should check out

1. a chinese odyssey... i've watched that movie approx 15 times because of extremely heavy rotation on cctv6... because: probably the best stephen chow movie after shaolin soccer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsRVxXyFi-8

2. flirting scholar... because: fucking funny, gong li is in it, stephen chow's wacky historical comedies created an entire genre of wacky historical comedies but this is the best one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAU4F-CVI18

3. from beijing with love... because: absurd, stolen dinosaur bones, full of cute trainspotting homages to hk cinema, funny.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCoDimnuVBg

hell the fuck yeah youtube

dylannn, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 12:51 (sixteen years ago)

dylannn, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 12:51 (sixteen years ago)

quiz show flat-track bully (darraghmac), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 13:08 (sixteen years ago)

just watched from beijing with love - not as funny as forbidden city cop (both use sorta the same premise) but definitely had me lolin'

it's an odd mix of seriousness and comedy - kind of reminded me of shaun of the dead or the host in that regard

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ (dyao), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

too bad the youtube version is chinese subtitles only ;_;
