jogging

so, i've been developing a beer belly which is bad because i'm otherwise skinny and i just have this bulge that appears out of nowhere - i look a bit like a skinny woman a few months into a pregnancy. so i've taken up (regular) jogging to put an end to this sorry situation.

do you jog? do you feel self-conscious jogging around on your own? i had a friend with me today so it wasn't too bad, but i'm planning to jog more regularly than him, so solitary jogging will be the order of the day.

jogging!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 30 August 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i prefer going alone. talking while running makes me pant and that's not cool.

gem (trisk), Monday, 30 August 2004 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, I don't like the idea of jogging, you get all sweaty and stuff. Going for a long walk that takes in shops is probably much better.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 30 August 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

you should not jog unless you have some freak heart rate and it ends up between 65% to 75% heart rate... this is the best zone to be in for burning fat...which is speed-walking

dancefloor (+dancefloor), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

unless you just like jogging, aspire to burn muscle along with fat, or are doing it for endurance trainig

dancefloor (+dancefloor), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I jog because I don't have the time or patience to spend an hour + exercising, so I'd rather jog for 20 minutes and burn as many calories as possible. Also, I've grown to enjoy building up some endurance and teaching myself how to do it without hurting something.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm totally going to get a beer belly soon. :-(

Also, I heard jogging is bad for your feet..? At least, that's the excuse I use. I do a hell of a lot of walking though.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I was running/hiking for five miles a day, 5 days a week for awhile there, then I started working two jobs. I feel out of shape now.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i wouldn't worry about muscle burning. my understanding is that it would take quite a prolonged duration before your body would 'switch over' to that state. but, if you're really looking to change your body shape, you can't beat lifting weights. do the jogging for aerobic exercise, but then lift to tone & re-shape your body.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

make sure that you get properly fitted for running shoes. it makes all the difference....not just in your feet, but your whole body.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I've tried jogging a couple of times and can't get along with it; I find it boring. I have got my mountain bike out over the last couple of days though - cycling is much better, you can go much further and see much more, plus IT HURTS MORE so must be better for you. And I just find peddling and having the wind in my face much more fun than jogging.

To tone yr beer belly, surely less beer and more sit-ups = the best way?

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Jogging just feels like much more of a full-body thing that biking (to me).

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

cycling won't tone your middle, but i've found that since i started biking to work, i run much better than i have. better = going longer without getting so tired & keeping a steady pace. running is really a pretty great all-body workout. and you can focus on your abs & lower back while you're running to make them work a bit harder. you can't quite do that the same way with cycling.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't be a stupid hippy like me; jogging in flip-flops is stupid and you WILL regret it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

how do you focus on your abs and lower back while running?

there is a good thread on marathon running with lots of good advice (you wouldn't think it: skipping ropes! amazing) in the archives, you should search it out kilian.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

running marathons.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually do feel like I'm getting some ab workout while running, if I tense them sometimes (there's that side-to-side swivel motion that happens naturally, you know?).

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i focus on my abs by making certain that my lower back & abs are pulled tight by straightening them while running. maybe it's just my tendency to be lazy & let my posture go a bit & when i'm actually paying attention & keeping it engaged, then the muscles get a little bit more from it. i think i just explained this in a very sloppy manner.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I find it helpful to take a deep breath every 10 breaths / strides.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

listen to techno

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Are people (on here, not REGULAR people) who jog disciplined enough to jog in torrential rain? Or HA is this laughably Not Done?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 30 August 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the best time to jog!!!

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 30 August 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I am currently wearing underwear that is too small for my ginormous ass, so today I went to the gym and did the elliptical trainer. MY GOD MY LEGS.. MY LEGS! THEY ACHE!

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Monday, 30 August 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I will run in most weather except extremely windy days.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 30 August 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

love love treadmills dude. can bang out a rad work out in a half hour and then come home and do the 10 pushup/10 sit up/9 push up/9 sit up deal....

brock (brock), Monday, 30 August 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

For the last two years, whenever I jog I hear Royksopp's "Eple" in my head!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 30 August 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Jogging is the devil.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 30 August 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I jog (haven't in three weeks, but swear I will start again Thursday), but always outside because I just hate treadmills. I don't jog with anyone because all my friends who do are Fast Runners who don't want to go for only two or three miles and don't want to do it at my pace, and also I can take headphones and it's kind of fun, so I suggest you do that.

Rain - no fun. Snow - no fun. Really cold weather - best time ever.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

make peace with your beer belly. it's your destiny. i'd much rather have a washboard face.

joseph pot (STINKOR™), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

bleck i'm dreading the run tommorrow. had three ciggys and a lot of whisky. gonna hurt dude.

brock (brock), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Solitary jogging is the way to go, unless you feel the need to be paced by someone else.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
i have been jogging a lot. jogging is very good.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
My new favourite thing is called jogging!

Yesterday we jogged for about 40 minutes along the Berkeley waterfront and down the pier. It was A-mazing! Our reward was seeing the sun set behind the Golden Gate and seeing tyhe lights of San Francisco flick on "like a Journey song". I listened to Rex The Dog and Superpitcher and Nathan Fake and watched people fish. Itis also funny to see people sat in their parked cars in the marina watching the sun go down - young couples, goth kids getting high, people who may or may not be having illicit affairs, PLUS two Mexican dudes with their windows rolled down drinking beer and singing along to Latin ballads at FULL volume. Jogging is awesome.

adam... (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 November 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i loev jogging too adam!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 29 November 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

It's too cold here to jog and see silly people, which is why I've been almost stubbornly unhealthy lately. I'm going to join the gym after New Years though, then I can jog around a track and make up stories about other gym-goers in my head and listen to my iPod (which I can't find right now).

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 29 November 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

eight months pass...
i always get side stitches when i run. if i get them early enough (in the first 3 minutes or so), i can just stand up straight and they work themselves out. but i usually get them about 19-21 minutes into my run. they're incredibly painful and i need to stop running. it's frustrating. how can i make it go away?

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

just running a bit slower for a while normally works for me

Matt (Matt), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

i hear it's wild.

Ron Burgundy, Friday, 29 July 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Swimming pwns running, that is all.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

No it doesn't. You can't listen to techno.
Caitlin, Matt's probably right, but it's not because of the speed - it's your breathing. If you're breathing shallow, slow down and take deeper breaths. Ideally, you shouldn't notice your breathing at all. Also, if you get through that, most runners say that the first 20 minutes are the hardest / least fun. From there, 20 - 70 or so minutes is relatively easy (then it gets hard again after that)...

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Yes Jim, cos when I'm running I'm forever contending with shouting, divebombing children. Enjoy your municipal playground.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Friend of ours - a near professional triathlete - advises people to take up jogging twice a day (in the beginning for example 15/20 min). In the morning and evening. This way you'll burn more energy.

nathalie's body's designed for two (stevie nixed), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

where do they find the time?

N_RQ, Friday, 29 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

For real.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Run to work and back?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

xpost yeah i used to be able to run for an hour but i'm getting fat now. sometimes i can run for 40 minutes, but i get the cramps every third time or so. i'll try focusing on breathing deeper.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Apparently if you try and blow outwards as hard as possible, then hold yer breath a bit and blow out again, this is supposed to work. Maybe it gets you breathing more deeply. Or if it's really bad, stop, arch your back and stretching your tummy and put your arms up high, concentrating on breathing deeply. Forget what the theory is for stitch, but watch what you eat before you run too. Maybe certain things are triggering it?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

No it doesn't. You can't listen to techno

Yes Jim, cos when I'm running I'm forever contending with shouting, divebombing children. Enjoy your municipal playground.

Yeah yeah, enjoy your overstressed joints Fallaize ;)

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Re cramps, careful what you eat before hand. The least you can eat while still having enuf energy to exercize the better. unless it is something simple like a granola bar, that is fine. I noticed I got cramps the other day and all I had was a smoothie.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 30 July 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

haha pertinent thread revival - i've recently taken the unprecedented step of trying to take regular exercise. classic i've-turned-30 health PH34R stuff. I've never spent so much on trainers in my life, but man, they're the most comfortable things I've ever worn!

And even though it's only been about a month, I'm slacking wildly already. I wanted to run three miles a day, three times a week, but it's more like two miles a day, twice a week if i'm lucky. Grrr. I hate having no motivation.

I currently run 100 paces then walk 50, and so forth, cos I've literally had fuck-all exercise since I was 18 (drug-fuelled all-night clubbing aside) and my body just can't deal. Hopefully cutting smoking from 10 a day to 5-10 a week will help.

But yeah, the breathing thing: I tend to fall in with my paces when I breathe, so I'm breathing in for two paces, then out for two, etc. Is this wrong? I get the feeling there's a method in all this, but I don't know anyone else who runs so haven't bothered to ask before.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 30 July 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

Yeah yeah, enjoy your inexorable development of webbed feet, Parker

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 30 July 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

I (now) love jogging. It took a couple weeks to get past the painful/awkward stage, but it's crazy how fast one can improve endurance and speed if you keep at it regularly. Mp3 player helps a lot with getting over that 20 min mark - and then comes the amazing endorphine rush! I prefer the treadmill b/c running in the city causes more stress than necessary. Treadmill is a nice zone-out of life blahdeblah, zone-into body experience.

I also took up swimming several weeks ago and it has really improved my jogging endurance. Now I swim one day, jog the next. And my abs! My abs! Oh, they're still covered in some womanly fat but they are showing through as it (slowly) goes away. Yeah, the only thing with swimming is no music (and the waterproof case for my iriver costs over $100! rrgh. well, maybe one day.)

(Also, from that H20 audio site:
"In the frozen tundra of Tofino, B.C. - Canada, Sepp uses H2O Audio listen to his favorite music, and mask the numbing cold. Check back later to see what Sepp listens to... "
- haha, Canada in being totally misrepresented yet again shockah... Tundra? It is rainforest, PR people. Please send me your waterproof audio device free of charge for this valuable information, thanks.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 30 July 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

apparently I have the knees of an 70-year-old man, so I've pretty much replaced jogging with swimming, which has been great for cardio and building muscle. But, yeah, the no music thing sucks. Also, chlorine is teh blecch... When I was on the west coast last year, I noticed a lot of hotel pools were using saline rather than harsh chemicals. Very nice.

Will (will), Saturday, 30 July 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

why does it take 48 hours for the post-jog muscle pain to come thru?

blueski, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

It's called delayed smug on the part of THE WORLD. Serves you right for trying to get fit.

Swimming pwns running, that is all.

-- Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:27

Right now, I totally agree with this. Although my belly ain't shifting through swimming and I suspect running does it more good.

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 10:36 (eighteen years ago)

It seems the most boring thing in the world. This is why I have taken up tennis again: as though I have a valid purpose to run. A goal. But of course it's silly as well: I mean ffs who runs after a little ball that keeps coming back?

stevienixed, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 10:41 (eighteen years ago)

why it takes that length of time for the pain to kick in i know not. do know that a good post-jog warm down and stretches are more effective at keeping the aches at bay than those you do beforehand.

stevienixed is right of course but you need another person. or a wall. to borrow from mitch hedberg, them motherfuckers are relentless.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 10:45 (eighteen years ago)

it's not pain so much as just this incredible sense of stiffness. i woke up with it (posts out of context thread can have this freebie if it wants)

blueski, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure i'm familiar with what you're talking about. do you go regularly? my recovery time was always longest when i hadn't gone jogging for a while but the less time i left between runs, the less time it took for the aches to subside.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 11:25 (eighteen years ago)

no it's because i hardly ever run in any way, but the time delay just seems weird. used to happen a day or two after playing football too.

blueski, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

then in my expert medical opinion your body is just weird. i guess it's just a tightening and your muscles take longer to settle down. if you do the stretchings afterwards you shouldn't get it at all though. probably.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 11:39 (eighteen years ago)
