57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

underneath, apparently

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

What if you could fit your whole life — all your music, all your photos, all your movies, all your email — in a computer as fun and useful as an iPod?

Well, my iBook does that already. :-) Of course it isn't a G5. :-(

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a laptop with a ball and chain. Well, a stand. And a keyboard that falls off your tummy.

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there elves that hammer spikes into your forehead? I'm not getting one unless there are.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The speakers are in your head, zombie

Frank Swedehead, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's lovely. And it has a digital 'out'.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

how much are they? do they look cool? should i get one? huh?huh?huh? i've been holding on to my ancient ancient imac for so long, delaying the inevitable. i dunno, mebbe it is pc time.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

They look like a white flatscreen monitor, basically, that's a bit fatter in order to house all the gubbins.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, okay. gotcha.

http://www.imac.com/

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I would totally put one on a chain and wear it around my neck.

Flavor Flav (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

They're making a play of it having the same angles in sideview as an iPod in its dock.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

it looks really pretty. i think i want one.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

though it swivels too, it just looks pretty when it's the same as the pod dock

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had the same computer since 1999. I think I'm ready for something new.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Then I'll get an igloo and I'll feel all new age like Momus.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

NEW AGE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Fake folk, s'il te plait.

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

oops, I think i meant new wave. Or maybe i didn't, i can't remember. I think new age in its purest sense is a good thing though. I bought that album by the books that you were always going on about, M. See, that album playing on my new imac in my igloo would make me feel very new age. i would need a haircut too though. and a shave. and some new wave eyeglasses.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

no more slot loadign drives for me, thank you very much.

:|, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i always thought my old imac was fine for removing my facial hair, don't know why they'd have to change it.

mms (mms), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man, that's pretty sweet.

this looks much better than the last one.

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

MAC OS 9

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

*slobber slobber drool*

This is actually a pretty decent bargain, too.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

where is the keyboard?

supercub, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

it's also in the monitor!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

it's in your brane!

i think i'll wait about 6 months to make sure this isn't a lemon, and then i'll buy one.

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is it that these things look like they'll break really easily when they get knocked over by accident?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"They were especially opposed to the lemon flavoured chews, which 'undoubtedly show a green figure having sex with a lemon.'"

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

This looks pretty cool! Although i like my iMac because it looks like a little person.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I am waiting for another speedbump, price drop and 10.4 to come out before I buy one of these. And then I will buy it with the 20" screen and it will be my first desktop computer in almost a decade.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

not that kind of lemon, dan

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

pretty tempted, pret-TY tempted

c/n (Cozen), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

weeeellll wellll

I'm bad and dirty and going to hell (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

£460, hm.

c/n (Cozen), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

The iMac G5 is a beautiful machine. I can confirm this. I'm on one now. 20" screen, 2gigs memory, a 160 Gig hard drive, 1.8 processor...

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

I am now officially saving up.

c/n (Cozen), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

NB. advertised iMac is the older model with the inferior graphics card.

Ed (dali), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I decided to buy a new Apple instead of switching back to Windows (the price difference just wasn't big enough). My little Sharp LCD is crap, so I need a better monitor anyway.

Now I'm torn between a 20" iMac G5 for $1800 w/ Applecare, I'll upgrade to 2GB of RAM aftermarket, or a dual G5 2GHz and 20" Apple monitor for $2800, which would necessitate selling off most of my Criterions (no big loss now that I have Netflix) along with my current computers.

Am I really going to be bumping against the limits of the iMac with Photoshop (files up to scanned 4x5 film at 200+MB but mostly in the 20MB-50MB range), some inDesign (teaching myself) and maybe GarageBand? Also looking at MacDraft for light 2D CAD at work.

I don't do video editing (though I might do a little for a class), no 3D rendering, don't play games at all. For the price difference I could get a nice Spyder calibration kit and a good Intuos tablet, plus I'd save room, but part of me is worried that I'm going to regret not going for the dual processor unit later on.

What say the people who know more about this shit than me?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

that was an xpost - Kenan you use it largely for design work, right? Any problems there?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

which graphics card did you spec the dual G5 with?

Ed (dali), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

9650/256MB RAM, it's only $50 more than the 9600 on the student program

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Kenan you use it largely for design work, right? Any problems there?

None at all. It runs Creative Suite like a dream. And with 2 gigs of memory, handles huge files with no trouble at all.

which graphics card did you spec the dual G5 with?

I didn't. It's just the standard 64. Perfectly adequade for anything except... well, I can only imagine. Some kind of super gaming.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

They seem to have stopped doing the Nvidia 6800GT and 6600 cards which were a good half way price between the Lower and higher models. When Quartz 2D Extreme hits you are going to really appreciate the extra VRAM that that the 9650 has, shame there isn't something in the $200-$250 price bracket to recommend getting.

Ed (dali), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

I want one now.

c/n (Cozen), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

They cut the price of the 6800 DDL upgrade to $400 and added a $400 ATI X850XT option
