Who knows something about carnivorous plants? Where sells them in N London? What should I get and why?

Owing to a slip of the finger, this thread was so very nearly about carnivorous pants.

I have a venus fly trap - it's been in the house for about 3 months, and it's still alive. However, the two mature traps who we fed flies to actually died and never reopened. I don't think they're supposed to do this.

Having said that, the rest of the plant (having been dead-headed) is doing okay, though it is only small. There are lots of rules you have to follow about maintaining a healthy venus fly trap - it seems it's fairly easy to kill it in quite a lot of ways. There are lots of good sites on the interweb that give details of how to look after them.

ha, I cann't resist mentioning my favourite comic book cover ever here. The Atom #1 (his power was shrinking very small) has our hero trapped in a venus fly-trap, struggling to hold the jaws apart, while its master gloats, saying "If my venus-fly-trap can defeat the mighty Atom, nothing can stop me taking over the world!" Can anyone think of any other superbeing that would be in any trouble here? Or why the Atom doesn't, like, just stop using his power and return to normal size? Or how Superman/Wonder Woman/Green Lantern/etc. would react when threatened with a small plant?

They're great fun. I had a Venus Fly Trap. They need humid conditions, mine seemed to like the bathroom. I decided to move it to the kitchen due to a lack of insects in the bathroom, but it never seemed as happy.

It died one winter. Possibly something to do with me feeding it boiled ham one drunken night.
But then again maybe not, I am the girl who can kill cactis.
Haven't killed one in a while though, and I've found a place that sells Venus Fly Traps so maybe I'll try again.

Celeste, Venus fly traps are bulbs, they're supposed to die in the winter. You can take out the bulb and replant it in the spring, apprently.

But also NO FEEDING THEM MEAT - the fat content *will* kill them.

Ooops.
Maybe it's thriving on some landfill site somewhere... plenty of flies there.
I'll definatly try again. I promise not to get drunk and feed it meat this time... or quorn... I was trying to turn it vegetarian.

Pashmina's pic is potrayal of the primal collective unconcious of our ancestors, when as meager hominids we were terrorized by prehistoric plants.

I once had a venus fly trap that also did this. Traps that actually caught something would always die back after digesting the prey. If you were cruel and tricked one into closing on nothing, it would reopen after a couple of days.

How many flies does a grown-up venus fly trap need? I'm worried that my flat might be not be sufficiently infested.
