I guess D.C. politics aren't of much interest to ILX.

Marion Barry winning a Ward 8 council election isn't exactly a comeback

As soon as he stepped out of his van, he began to dance to a jazz combo set up under a tent.

As a throng of reporters converged upon him, Barry pointed a finger. "I told you so," he said

Only in America!

there are barely any current dc ilxors i think. i do still live here and am too cynical to care. sometimes i really loathe dc, and this is one of those days (even before i knew of the election results).

Marion Barry came and spoke to a cocktail hour crowd at an Association of Alternative Newsweeklies convention in Washington about 6 years ago. He was totally full of rah-rah shit. We were only there for the free drinks. It seemed like a fair deal.

I also have a friend who got hit on by him in grad school, in the '60s.

Anyway, David Remnick said everything interesting there was to say about Marion Barry in his New Yorker profile however many years back.

Actually, maybe I am revealing too much, but...

I have met Marion Barry. I rode in his limo with police escort, sat in his luxory box at RFK, and went to his house. I've also hung out with his son a few times. This was all when I was about 9 years old, and it means nothing beyond the its weirdness. He was mayor then.

This is no joke.

I always regretted not holding on to an old T-shirt featuring a caricature of Marion Barry smoking crack and shouting "That Bitch Set Me Up!" that they used to sell at all the crummy vendors outside the Smithsonian and the mall.

four years pass...

Washington -- District of Columbia Councilman Marion Barry found himself mired in more political, legal and personal drama Sunday after his arrest late Saturday on charges that he was stalking a female companion.

Barry's latest run-in with the law centers on his relationship with political consultant Donna Watts-Brighthaupt, who alleges that he continues to approach her even though they split up a few months ago.

Barry, Watts-Brighthaupt and police gave conflicting accounts of how the former mayor ended up in custody Saturday night after attending several Fourth of July functions.

U.S. Park Police arrested Barry about 8:45 p.m. in Anacostia Park after a woman flagged down an officer to report that a man in a nearby vehicle was "bothering her," police said.

Barry, 73, was charged with one count of "misdemeanor stalking," said Sgt. David Schlosser, a Park Police spokesman.

Barry, on probation for failing to pay his federal taxes, was released hours later and ordered to appear in court Thursday. Through a spokeswoman, Barry called the charges unfounded and asked prosecutors to drop them.

Watts-Brighthaupt said she didn't seek to have Barry arrested and did not report the encounter to police. Police pulled him over for a traffic violation, she said.

If convicted of the stalking charge, Barry could face a year in prison and a fine up to $500, according to police sources. Barry is to meet with reporters today.
