H & M - Classic or Dud?

A big H & M clothing store just opened here in Toronto, so I went and had a look. I'm not the most fashionable guy in the world, but I do pay attention to what people are wearing, and I saw a few things that I'd consider owning, none of which were outrageously priced. What's the word on these guys? Are there clothes well-made or do they fall apart after a few weeks?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 9 October 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I went up there during the grand opening actually - bought two tees (that fit pretty well really) and a sweater - good price, and no complaints on the quality so far. I really wanted some pants, but it was completely mad in there so I'll give it another try later.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 9 October 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, Kim. Also, please read "their" for "there" in my opening post. I cannot type.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 9 October 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, I didn't even notice.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 9 October 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, duh.

Remy (x Jeremy), Saturday, 9 October 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, duh.

Do tell.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Sunday, 10 October 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

in a series of haikus:

I was in england
on a sherwood forest train
my clothes were stolen

insurance covered
replacing all my luggage
to one thousand bucks

once at h & m
i told the store manager
my predicament

she gave me almost
two thousand dollars
worth of merchandise

Remy (x Jeremy), Sunday, 10 October 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

most of my wardrobe
is comprised of h & m
trousers and jumpers

i look slightly queer
(but metrosexual is in)
so it's not too bad

to be seen wearing
a bright teal rollneck sweater
and tight-ass denim.

Remy (x Jeremy), Sunday, 10 October 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for sharing!!! That's a ringing endorsement if I ever saw one.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Sunday, 10 October 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it like C&A? If so I'll give it a miss if I'm ever in Toronto...

C&A were a UK company that spent over 25 years selling low quality goods for extremely cheap prices, but it finally got the better of them in 2001 and they went bankrupt. Now unused C&A bags can be seen in landfill sites across the country!!

JTS, Sunday, 10 October 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the quality is good actually (though for the price who cares if it falls apart after a few washes) - the only concern is that sometimes it can be embarrassing to see 10 people in one day wearing the same cheap but nice jumper as you.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 10 October 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

jed OTM.

Gigantic [something] (nordicskilla), Sunday, 10 October 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Dud because there's not one within 2000 miles of me.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 10 October 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Their suits are crap, though, But what do you expect for 50 pounds?

Gigantic [something] (nordicskilla), Sunday, 10 October 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i like their stuff, just wish some of the cuts for the large were a bit roomier. whoever is their head buyer in philadelphia tends to get the tackier, sluttier stuff. i actually prefer to go to the H&M's in nj over the ones in town for this reason.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 10 October 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you thought to see where their clothes are made? Bangladesh, Indonesia. Sweatshops, basically. So dud.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Sunday, 10 October 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

well, they could be paying a living wage in those countries of course (i have no idea whether they do or not). that aside (and show me a high street shop who doesn't produce clothes in asia), the clothes are great and cheap, and approx three quarters of my "wardrobe" is from there :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 10 October 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.hm.com/uk/hm/social/coc.jsp

corporate social responsibility stuff, looks reasonable...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 10 October 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The matter is not so simple really, but they seem keen to improve.

From http://www.ethicalmatters.co.uk:

H&M is cheap. Suspiciously cheap. Their website quickly explains this does not mean they sacrifice their workers. They say they have a thorough Code of Conduct, and an extremely enlightened policy on child labour.

But are they a model fashion retailer? Transnationale -an NGO collecting information on large companies reports H&M’s factories in Bangladesh don’t allow trade unions, or give their employees contracts. Nor do they pay minimum wage - an unbelievably small 8 cents an hour. On top of this they may impose overtime of up to 80 hours a week. In Europe H&M do not put the country of origin on their clothes because they are not legally bound to do so.

In August 2001, 24 workers died in a factory that makes H&M clothes (among others), in Bangladesh. The building’s two emergency exits were locked when a fire began, trapping workers inside. A panicked rush for the exits led to people crushed to death trying to escape through the unlit, too small exits. H&M have since made safety improvements, paid for hospital bills and provided counsellors for their workers. They have also liased with the Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) to find ways to ensure the protection of their labourers in a building where their clothes are produced only on one floor.

There are contradictions, but H&M's work with the CCC does imply they are trying to improve their working practices. Their comprehensive Code of Conduct explains while they do not tolerate children working in their factories, if they find any, they financially compensate their families for their loss of earnings after the kids are removed. This makes sure the children won’t be forced into worse forms of work. They back this up in Bangladesh with a training scheme for young people to give them alternatives to full-time employment, set up with the ILO. Indeed H&M have a bewildering array of campaigns. They sell bikinis to raise awareness and money for Water Aid, donate un-sellable clothes to charity and give money to Terres de Hommes, a charity working for children's rights and development.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Sunday, 10 October 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

fair dos, wasn't really having a go, but saying clothes are produced in asia therefore they must be sweatshopped is a little reductive unless you knit your own knickers and live in a yurt...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 10 October 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, yes. Agreed. Wasn't trying to be holier than, either. 'Tis tough to come to ethical grips with globalization, isn't it?

Guymauve (Guymauve), Sunday, 10 October 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the only concern is that sometimes it can be embarrassing to see 10 people in one day wearing the same cheap but nice jumper as you.

Haha, yes. There was one infamous FAP where four out of the fifteen or so attendees arrived wearing the same H+M top.

RickyT (RickyT), Sunday, 10 October 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Sweatshops: C or D?

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 10 October 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

H&M's new ad on TV looks pretty cool. i went to the H&M shop near Oxford Circus when they started doing men's clothes, but it was all three quarter length trousers and tees with dopey dragon prints. i hope their clothing's improved.

(the guilt involved in buying cheap sweatshop-derived goods is implicit in this message, not unacknowledged. i buy fairtrade groceries, but i know that isn't enough)

stevie (stevie), Sunday, 10 October 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

don’t allow trade unions,

All the more reason to shop there.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 10 October 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't stand their men's clothing... it all fits like crap.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 10 October 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The sleeves of yr standard H&M XL male longsleeve top/shirt invariably stop about two inches up from my wrists which is infuriating, also their stripey jumpers barely cover my naval. I am not remotely squareshaped enough for most H&M clothes, I guess this is something that I feel bad about.

Also their various jeans-cut-styles are totally beyond my understanding, making jeans that are specifically designed to be worn low maybe undermines the whole point of wearing jeans low (because otherwise they tend to be too short?). Basically these bastards completely have it in for me.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 10 October 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"don’t allow trade unions"

All the more reason to shop there.

isn't this british for "labor union"? i thought i had heard about them not allowing their workers to unionize. i'm pretty sure this doesn't mean something like a free trade agreement.

caitlin hell (caitxa), Sunday, 10 October 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it means "the union of the snake" which is why I'm foursquare behing Mr. Noodles. I don't want to think about someone's soft, naked butt getting pushed into a stack of khakis in some dingy third-world factory when I'm doing my clothes shopping!

Or maybe I do.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Sunday, 10 October 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

There was an H&M advet on tele this mornign and the soundtrack was "Three Girl Rhumba" by Wire (couldn't tell if it was the original or a faithful cover). wtf is that about?!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 10 October 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought some jeans there once, they were horrible. They ain't no Uni Qlo.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 10 October 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

C&A were a UK company that spent over 25 years selling low quality goods for extremely cheap prices, but it finally got the better of them in 2001 and they went bankrupt. Now unused C&A bags can be seen in landfill sites across the country!!

They weren't British, didn't go bankrupt, and - although pulling out of the UK - are still operating across most of Europe.

(I think they're Belgian, but I could be wrong).

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 10 October 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i like h&m clothes and they're cheap but the quality is pretty junky, they're likely to fall apart rather quickly. they're like the fast food of clothing

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 10 October 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the H&M website flash commerical has had 3 girl rhumba up for a few months now to advertize the fall/winter line.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 10 October 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought this nice jumper from there once and i saw two people wearing it in college the next day. I never wore it in the end.

Oddly, i find their white t-shirts fit really nicely and seem to retain quality better than other white t-shirts. I have about 12 of them now.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Sunday, 10 October 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"tear me asunder" isn't the best line to use to advertise notoriously fragile attire

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 10 October 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The only H&M thing that broke on me was a great pair of khaki trousers that had their poscket torn asunder by a cellphone aerial.

Ratchet (nordicskilla), Sunday, 10 October 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

poscket is Swedish for pocket

Ratchet (nordicskilla), Sunday, 10 October 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

my friend & i decided that 3 girl rhumba would be a great cell-phone commercial song "from number to number!" also that gang of four song that goes "please give me evenings and weekends!"

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 October 2004 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

we're going to start a post-punk ad agency.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 October 2004 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i braved the toronto store today, not really sure why. i mean i was out clothes shopping like everybody else or whatever so it's ridiculous of me to complain like this but the sight of SO many people clamouring for $7 t-shirts in such tight spaces absolutely made my blood boil. it was an unreal scene, just a total pigfuck orgy of capitalism. then i saw a really nice brown tweed blazer and briefly forgot about the whole pigfuck orgy thing while i contemplated buying it. i didn't, which was good, cause i counted three different people wearing the same tweed blazer within a two mile radius of the store. fuck you h&m!!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 11 October 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i have had a belt and a shirt from london two years, that have held up perfectly, when my money comes in, this should be a FAS (fancy a shop)

anthony, Monday, 11 October 2004 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

also mark, can you email me ?

anthony, Monday, 11 October 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like H & M as you can get really good quality clothes (esp basics) for very little cash. It's odd when you think things in their are overpriced. In the sense of high street shops they aren't just in comparison to other H & M products. The only thing I hate about H & M though, is that they cram so much into their shops that it is a nightmare trying to find anything.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 11 October 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Hennes & Mauritz - does it fucking rock or what?

H&M is still much worse than it used to be. Top Man is where it's at.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

They ain't no Uni Qlo.

Thank christ for that. We had one of those in Brighton for about 6 months until it shut because the clothes were just so borrinnggzzzzzzzz. It was like the stuff you'd buy at M&S or something.

Top Man is where it's at.

Top MAN? Top Shop is good for the ladies, but Top Mans clothes have such nasty horrible shapeless cuts and are so middle of the road.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

No, you are wrong. They have some awful tat, still, but having been recommended nu-Top Man by style mags and stylish friends for some time, I finally went there last month and wow, some great stuff. Mostly on the expensive, designer rails, but not exclusively. I did spend £79 on two T-shirts, which obv. isn't cheap at all, but they're cool.

Apparently, Mark One is the latest cheapo clothing store to draft in cutting edge designers for men's clothes. I haven't been there yet.

Uniqlo is rubbish, yes.

TK Maxx is the other place to be, of course.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought some great jeans there for 15 quid.

Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode is in new H&M ads.

Thus, classic.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

HE HATH NO CHIN!!! DO YOU THINK I'M GOING TO LET HIM TELL ME WHERE TO BUY MY CLOTHES?!?!?

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

You leave Dave alone. He's been to some dark places and he looks kinda spiffy in H&M:

http://www.davegahan.com/news/h_and_m_400.jpg

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

As I said on the other thread, UK H&M did men's clothes back in the late 80s. I used to buy them. I was thrilled at discovering the (small) department, aged 15. They then stopped doing them for a while.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i agree that Gahan looks good

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 11 October 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I live in fear of seeing nine people at a gig wearing the same black-and-red stripey zippy top as me

Haha OTM, this happened to me the other day wering my black-and-red stripey zippy top.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 11 October 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Top Man is where it's at.

Didn't Top Man's chief executive once say that his target market was 18 year olds who needed to buy a suit for their first court appearance?

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

You can all scoff as much as you like. More clothes for me.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in there, recently, by chance. there was one sweater that looked OK but nothing special and that was it.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe the Oxford Circus one is a different proposition to the rest.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Cult Clothing dressed the nation

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, well, that is possible. you should check out the one at the top of buchanan street and report back.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I will.

Among all the Kevins in the Oxford Circus one, there were a sizable minority of scary hipster types.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Aha, yes. The bigger one's sell clothes from boutiquey labels too. Oxford Circus is an amazing place (albeit horrendously busy) and the new one in Birmingham's Bull Ring is also quite good. However, there is usually quite a price premium on these.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Are they different to normal hipsters, or do you find all hipster types scary?

(xpost)

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Top Man that is, not Hennes.

(x-post)

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

All are scary. Actually, I wasn't scared by them at all, really. In fact, I may even have been one of them.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of the non-boutiquey Top Man own brand jeans looked good, too, though they didn't have any 28s or 30s in.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i gave the first lecture on the post grad course i've just started running on friday. three of the students were wearing a suit jacket and t-shirt/jeans, as was my co-lecturer. i too was wearing said jacket, but felt vindicated because i was also wearing a black flowered cowboy shirt and black Ben Davis slacks - more Galllon Drunk than Strokes chic. i felt less vindicated knowing that i was wearing exactly the same clothes the night before (hadn't had time to shower/change after my gf's party), and that one of the students had seen me out the night before in the same outfit.

stevie (stevie), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i felt less vindicated knowing that i was wearing exactly the same clothes the night before (hadn't had time to shower/change after my gf's party), and that one of the students had seen me out the night before in the same outfit.

i'd feel more vindicated.

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, yeah, i felt kinda cool, if i'm being honest.

stevie (stevie), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Felt cool or *smelled* cool? ;-)

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i agree that Gahan looks good

I'll take that backhanded compliment, ta!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i smelled okay, having liberally coated myself in CK1, though i enjoyed a long-assed bath when i finally got home...

stevie (stevie), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugh, until you got to the CK1 bit, I was thinking all "woo, Stevie sounds like he turned into a dirty rock boy!" and thinking I'd lick you, but ugh, taste of cologne. ;-)

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

my armpits were quite fruity by the time i got to the tube home, if that's any help!

stevie (stevie), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

ass baths, classic or dud?

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Look you just asked for this, it's not my fault I had to post it, I was provoked by Tracer up there.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

oooh, looks cold. my bath involved scalding hot water, candles, bubbles, a doobie and a Richard Pryor album...

stevie (stevie), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm really wrestling with my libido right now.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I popped into Top Man this lunchtime. They have a decent shoe selection - now that I'm attempting to buy adult shoes instead of trainers all the time, I'm a bit in awe of the selection but tried on some crackers. Is Jeffrey West (I think?) a good brand?

The clothes, on the other hand, were pretty nasty, apart from a pair of washed out green cord, which they didn't have in my size anyway. Grr.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you look at the Raygun rail, Mark?

I guess they are not good for sensible, useful clothes, in the way H&M and Zara are. But for flashy fun... I want more.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

As for H&M, I like it a lot. I like all the variety and the chaos because it's more like looking for buried treasure. I don't like the crowds so much though. I always have to stand in a REALLY REALLY long line to try clothes on, and everyone has like 15 pieces on clothing in their hand to try on.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

my bath involved scalding hot water, candles, bubbles, a doobie and a Richard Pryor album

aside from the scalding, that sounds likes the king of baths.

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

it was!

stevie (stevie), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I also bought a Stevie Trousers style charcoal v-neck sweater from Muji. I somehow feel this is a confession.

N., no, I didn't see the Raygun aisle (what is Raygun? Is it good?) - I wasn't in there for very long but what I was after, grown-up, stylish gear, was in very short supply.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Got me a great pair of bootcut chords in H&M two years ago, but they're kinda falling apart. I did wear them an awful lot though.
It's very hit 'n miss is H&M. Basically go for the Divided range which is a bit hipper than the Logg stuff, which is all really straight and dull. That said, there can be some rather nasty Divided items that are trying to be kinda kooky and look a bit rank. Oranges and browns and such like. Their shirts aren't much cop, but you can get some decent jumpers, zip up hoodies and the like.
Top Man has got much better - some brilliant funky suits which I'd buy if I had money and wanted to look spivvy. Great range of Seth Cohen polo shirts. My blue and brown hooped polo has been my favourite shirt this summer. Some of their cowboy shirts are nice too - got a good orangey/red/russety one in the Jan sales. No floral ones though. You gotta go to Flip for that. Another place in Glasgow I've never had the courage to go into is the cowboy apparel store in Partick. Might well be the place for awesome western shirts.

Stew S (stew s), Monday, 11 October 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear Quiggins in Liverpool is getting knocked down. The pop boutique in there was great. Sniff sob.

Stew S (stew s), Monday, 11 October 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Top Man is not the place for grown up smart casual gear, no. Maybe I should grow up.

Another place in Glasgow I've never had the courage to go into is the cowboy apparel store in Partick. Might well be the place for awesome western shirts.

My ex gf (I seem to be talking about her a lot today) hired a red indian dress from there once. She took about three weeks to return it and they didn't seem to mind. I think she got one of the members of staff there in trouble, by telling the manager that she had tried to return it the day before but it had been closed (which was true). "Oh it was, was it? That's very interesting." I don't think it's a scary place.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I've bought quite a lot of nice-fitting shirts in H & M and none of them have ever fallen apart. I did see somebody wearing the same shirt as me once but it was in an Oik club that I wouldn't normally go to. And apparently it had recently gone on sale for like five pounds or something. I bought it when it was EXPENSIVE.

I also got a REALLY NICE winter coat in the Bull Ring one for £35 earlier this year which I'm still happy about now.

There seem to be a lot of unnervingly attractive people in there during the day. Lots of greasy Federico-haired suit jacket types as well, obviously.

Michael Philip Philip Philip Philip Philip Annoyman (Ferg), Monday, 11 October 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and if its brown i'll buy it. doesn't matter what it is. i was once accused by an NME section head of 'looking like a bar of galaxy', on the day i absent mindedly wore my brown silk shirt, brown cords and brown suede sneakers...

stevie (stevie), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing wrong with brown - I too could dress up like a Galaxy bar if I so wished - it's just that there are some pretty minging colour combos such as orange and brown, purple and brown, cerise and brown. Well probably not cerise and brown, but you get my point.

I saw Federico in the hospitality area at T in the Park this year. Came across as a right fanny. I heard a brilliant story about what a tosser he is, but I wouldn't want to land anyone in trouble so my lips are sealed.

Stew S (stew s), Monday, 11 October 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought some lovely trousers from there this weekend. Saw the 'made in Bangladesh' thing (and that code of conduct on their web-site isn't very all-encompassing, really) and decided I couldn't justify buying sweat-shop goods, then went away, thought about them all day and went back and bought them. So much for principles.

There was a nice jumper there, too..

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw a nice H&M jumper, it was brown and yellow and you wouldn't be seen dead in it. Is this the one everyone likes? It reminds me of The Goodies. I didn't buy it because of the FAP incident referred to above.

I turned down a job in M&S. Hooray me! I would turn down H&M too.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Would you turn down an M&M?
