Understand that I do not mean to make fun of the Amish culture at all. It's just that this Web siteis making my eyes hurt.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a thread for pictures of and/or experiences with uber-modest clothing.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Their heads are not covered they are not TRUE AMISH.

They've allowed themselves to be photographed they have lost their TRUE AMISH SOULS.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It's just so.....sad somehow.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't know that modest was a synonym for FUGLY.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

[These clothes] began in response to the need for women and girls to return to principles of modesty and femininity — to truly dress like women of virtue and principle.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

They're deffo not true Amish, that shit is FLOWERED and LACEY.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to say, I like their swimwear, though. I would much rather go bathing in one of those! That is, if I bathed. Which, obviously, I don't believe in.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh. My. God.

I mean, yeah, I'm a big believer that most women and girls these days are exposing way too much skin (the world is not your OB/GYN!), but damn, this is SO SO SO not the way to go about rectifying that! God. I mean, talk about swinging the pendulum toward the OTHER extreme! And the family pictured on the front page -- dude. Though the boy on the far left and the girl on the far right of the picture both look like some of the Amish kids from "Amish in the City", so....

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(Maybe these people are just regular Mennonites.)

(Or ultra-extremely conservative Christian-ish.)

(The swimsuits look rather cumbersome for swimsuits, though, Kate! You don't want to do the whole normal one-piece thing with the frilly mini-skirt attachment?)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

sexaaaay!

stevie (stevie), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't swum in years, but the last time I did, I did so in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. If I could find a bathing costume that covered MY ENTIRE BODY, I might think about bathing again, but until that day, no no no no, one-piece with skirts or no.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post, Man, I like those bloomers.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I very seldom see women exposing their vaginas in the street, Dee.

I know it's bad but I just had to click on the "lingerie" link. And boy was I glad I did! Hubba hubba!

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing that frightens me is their whole religious reasoning behind the clothes... that somehow, if you change what's on the outside, you're making yourself more pure on the inside. It's all so stifiling.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think these folks are Amish either. I think there is a fairly big Mennonite population somewhere in Kansas, so Dee is probably right about that (although she is wrong about women/men/anyone exposing too much skin as that is just not possible, unless it is too cold or something.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, btw did the Lord say anything about wearing lots of clothing in the bible?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't it say do not worry about what you wear?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

God gave us shame, and it was seen as a bad thing, right? So why is shame so in for these sects?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Those clothes look terrible. they're not even charmingly old-fashioned or anything. they make the people wearing them look like gilead is their utopia or something.

(x-post, I don't think it does, I mean, you'd have to make a real effort to consistently dress in such a way)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Thou shalt look just FABULOUS in those pants"

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Bloomers for Girls

These bloomers are worn under dresses as either legs warmers or for modesty when climbing trees, etc.

Climbing trees?? Am I missing something here, ladies?

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, sometimes we climb trees. It's truly outrageous!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe that's where Dee's seen all these flanges?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I get it. Upskirt modesty.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

that is deeply sad. i can't help but feel i should spam them with pictures from la-senza and ann summers.

maybe they will start stocking canes and belts so children can be disiplined in the old fashioned ways.

just out of interest Je4nne ƒury - WTF where you searching for to come across this... this.... this freak show?

L.P.D! Webmaster (letpandasdie.com), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Another thing that bothers me: How will these young women EVER feel comfortable with their sexuality!? I mean, it's tough enough dealing with all the freakish and frightening biological things that happen to your body during puberty WITHOUT being taught that your body is the gateway to eternal damnation. Gah.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha, I was searching for "girl's jumper" so I could show Markelby what the American version of a "jumper" is.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a friend at my first high school who was on the debate team with me. She had hair down to her ass. She was very tall and skinny, but had to cover every inch of skin. She'd wear these skirts that covered her ankles. I don't know what church she went to, but they definitely put the fear o' god in her. My friends and I were shocked she had never donned a swimsuit before (or gone swimming at all for that matter), so when we were away on a tournament, we let her borrow one to go to the hotel pool. She was ecstatic. She looked like a little kid. Also, we let her borrow a pair of jeans to wear one day. Naughty!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet there was a lot of self-flagellation later though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope she cut her hair eventually. It was frightening - probably took a REALLY long time to wash thouroughly.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think they are Mennonites, Mennonites and German Baptists usually wear clothing very similar to the Amish, but have zippers and normal socks and everything. I think this may be unique Kansas bible belt fundamentalism gear. $18 for a pair of cotton bloomers is a rip-off anyway.
"Great for horseback riding." I wonder if they must ride sidesaddle to prevent any funny feelings while astride a beast.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i especially like the title 'mother/daughter look-alikes'

eww.

my uncle's family dresses like that, actually. i think his wife was really christian before they got married, and she and their two daughters dress like the family on the front page.

my dad's siblings are messed up.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a site for the men of radical Christia sects?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 11 October 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"I don't know what church she went to, but they definitely put the fear o' god in her...."

Sounds like a Pentecostal. I went swimming at a swimming hole with a Pentecostal once, and he swam fully clothed!

andy, Monday, 11 October 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Our customer base includes traditional, homeschool, missionary, and military families in the USA and internationally.

you don't say.

g--ff (gcannon), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

'What makes this nightgown so special is that it is so comfortable and roomy, giving you plenty of freedom for movement. Yet it is nice and long and provides ample coverage. Perhaps best of all, it has an elasticized lace neckband, making it so easy simply to pull down to nurse your baby.'

Nothing about 'or so your hubby can grab your love puppies, hubba hubba'. Hummmmmmmm.

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Monday, 11 October 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yay! reinforcing ascetisicm thru clothing!

i dig the Edwardian vibe of the guy's shirt & vest, tho, but i can't tell if the vest has pockets or not. WHERE AM I TO PUT MY WATCH & FOB?!

Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Monday, 11 October 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Modest without the FRUMP!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

not as hot as that one girl in Amish In The City that i had a huge crush on.

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

This thread is interesting. All this "omg amish/fundamentalist man what horrible clothes" etc. Which they are, but you know, I see plenty of Jewish families around dressed this way. Not as frilly and flowery (whats with that?) but certainly skirts to ankles, long sleeves - and many women wear wigs. Apparently showing ones real hair is a no-no to a hasidic (or lubavicht? not sure which they are) Jew.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

Man, that shit still looks pretty frumpy to me.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

The other funnything is, by the definitions of modesty (long skirts, covering tops, feminine) then goth ladies totally fit the bill =)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

These sites are obviously just a clever ruse that some textile manufacturers are using to get rid of ugly old sample swatches.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

The number of children in that picture suggests that the man and wife have been doing some serious Lord-honoring.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

I don't know... most of the tops on that site are cut like tops I wear on a regular basis (i.e. loose & with 3/4 length sleeves), though I almost exclusively wear pants so maybe I'm not what this site would consider "modest". And I certainly could see myself wearing some of those dresses, but definitely NOT during the summer. So maybe I like the frump. Or not.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

I dress what you'd technically call modestly a lot of the time - long (ankle length or below knee length) skirts, long sleeves etc. But I do wear jeans and mens boots and things, I suppose they frown on that.

Even when I wear short skirts I always wear black hose underneath, I hate the sight of my bare legs. No one sees them!

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

See, I'd consider that kind of wardrobe/physical appearance "modest". There would be no problem with you walking in from work or hanging out or whatever to my or any other church I can think of. I would think even the most conservative priests in the church I go to would have nary a problem with your mode of dress. And yes, I'm remembering that you have dyed hair and a nose piercing -- those things, though, are minor to the point of being negligible, especially considering that you probably dress more conservatively than about half the congregants I see at church on a regular basis.

Anyway. I'm rambling, aren't I?

AaronK (AaronK), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

although i gotta say, those tops looks a bit clingy.

AaronK (AaronK), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

...and that nursing slip is decidedly risqueeeeee
