Spraypainting You Furniture Gold --- Gold Itself?

This weekend I got trashed with one of my friends while we were painting her new room purple and came up with the random idea of painting the trim gold, then it evolved into painting all of the furniture gold.

I was convinced this was a fantastic idea and headed to Home Depot to buy a can of gold metallic spraypaint and it was only 3 dollars. Now safely drying in my apartment building is my bed frame, lamp, and telephone, and I intend on giving my endtable and bookshelf the same treatment as well.

What are some good ideas for taking this further, into a realm of thrift-store decadence. I want to by one-dollar jewelery and cut up cheap velvet blazers. I want my furniture to look like it belongs in a palace. I'm thrilled by it all, for some reason.

Is this a bad idea? Is this what white trash does? I don't know..

Btw the thread title should read "Your". Unless of course I was speaking directly to the furniture itself.

Which i was when i thought it up.

Yeah, but the girl has got to go.

I have an old iron bed frame that I painted gold. Got the idea from a guy who's kind of a nut that makes his home look like a museum.

Anyway, the bed is in our guest room, looks fantastic, and, sadly, has produced no comments other than it's real comfortable.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm debating putting a sealer coat on it. Cos I prayed the stuff at 3 today and it's almost 1 now and its looking kind of fragile.

Jim, is this what you did? Or did u do multiple coats? What's the best way (and cheapest, of course..)

Adam Bruneau (oliver8bit), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, Adam, I sprayed the paint into an empty quart container and applied it with a brush. (one coat on top of a previously painted surface)

Spray paints are mostly oil based and hold up quite well. Mine's been on for about five years.

Good Luck!

at my last ann arbor flat, we spraypainted the outside of the claw-foot bathtub silver. it had been painted some ugly brown color and was peeling off. it looked FANTASTIC when we were finished. i think we ended up spraying all the outlets and vents as well.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I want gold furniture now.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to make my house look museum-y also. Jim wentworth what else does your friend do to his house?

In college one of my housemates spraypainted her sneakers silver/gold and then followed that up by covering all of her furniture and walls and ceiling with kitchen foil, which she somehow wangled from the dining hall supply.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Which meant that it was undoable when she had to move out, however taking it down was difficult since it would cut your hands if you weren't very careful.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I had one wall covered in tin foil at university. It was a bit like being in a David Bowie video or something, only rubbish. I think the wall underneath was worse though.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

You can't go wrong with silver and/or gold spraypaint. It's impossible.

I wouldn't use it on furniture, but my old dog's igloo-doghouse looked a whole let better in gold.

I only did one coat on my bed frame at 3pm yesterdays and let it dry in the stairwell. Then I slept on the matress and when i woke up I put the whole thing together.

Now that it's dark ouside and the candles are flickering in my room, there's a very nice glimmer to the bedposts and I realize it is possibly the best 3 dollars I ever spent.

I wish my camera was working cos i want to post pics too! The ones above are amazing..

Adam Bruneau (oliver8bit), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey great! Yeah, it's a pretty cheap investment. I'd nearly forgotten I gave the same treatment to our antique claw-foot bathtub, too. I hand painted the exterior of it a burgundy (low gloss, maybe even flat) and did the feet with the same gold that I used on the bed. It looks like a million bucks.

Sarah, My friend's house is tiny with small rooms that are filled from floor to ceiling with local artists' paintings and photos of old movie stars and singers. Old wind-up clocks everywhere along with old phonographs, maybe a hundred coffee pots in the kitchen and other curios. Nothing that is real expensive. Just old things and lots of them. The drawback is that there's little space for actual living. Plus I'd hate to do his dusting.

The dog house sounds like the capitol building rotunda!

Spraypainting your furniture gold (or bronze) is so 1994.
