Amazon recommends c/d

I actually find it ok -- i have to keep telling it "no, i bought that some years back" and so on -- and i've bought stuff off it on spec. But suddenly i've found the LuvMeLuvMe Shaggy single in there, nestled between "Music has the right to children" (NO, i have that you fool!) and "Alive to Every smile" TrembBluStrs (i'll think about it).

Am i a corporate sucka?

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Of course it's not that classic -- i'd rather have friends recommend me stuff -- but it does send the right stuff my way more often than not

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It used to come up with things I already own but now whatever I put in it's stuck on this list, which is a bit boring and predictable really:

1. Dog on Wheels [SINGLE] - Belle & Sebastian
2. 3-6-9 Seconds of Light Ep [SINGLE] - Belle & Sebastian
3. Tigermilk - Belle & Sebastian
4. This Is Just a Modern Rock Song [SINGLE] - Belle & Sebastian
5. Fever - Kylie Minogue
6. Y'All Get Scared Now Ya Hear - Reindeer Section
7. All Is Dream [LIMITED EDITION] - Mercury Rev
8. The Peel Sessions - Kenickie
9. The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane And Other Favorites - Jeffrey Lewis
10. Glee - Bran Van 3000
11. We Need a Resolution [SINGLE]- Aaliyah
12. To Bring You My Love - P.J. Harvey
13. Let It Live [SINGLE] - Haven
14. The Golden Age - Bobby Conn
15. The Joy of Sing-Sing - Sing-Sing

I've spent hours trying to budge that B+S.

Graham, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HA HA HA. I'm sorry, that was cruel of me.

I think it notes only the last couple of purchases I ever did for me. Which is why I get recommendations for the Cult and Asterix.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you can tell it to forget those tho (if you can be bothered)

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Boring, boring, boring. I put a C.S. Lewis book on a wish list, and suddenly it's all C.S. Lewis books. I put a Philip Dick book on there, and suddenly except for one C.S. Lewis it's all Philip Dick books! Variety is good, not bad.

Maria, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sounds dud, I actually have a bad habit of buying music on the packaging- marketing techniques. I usually end up liking what I get because I am pretty good at figuring out who is going to package in that way. I have also bought a cd (moog cookbook) from a review which said it had the best version of are you going to go my way ever performed.

amazon however, oh I can do without their lists, they turn up on every damn search i make anyway. I'll stick to the second hand stores thanks..

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have to use sites like Amazon for my job, so it's a good way to waste time while looking like I'm doing research.

Kerry, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cdnow's recommendations are more interesting, as I recall. I used to spend hours clicking on 'Don't want that' or 'Already have that' even when it wasn't true. I think it ended up recommending ELO albums.

I swear amazon.com just recommended the Bulletin of the Bangor Theological Seminary, Fall 1999. A special issue on Mary. Has it lost it's mind? Actually, this is probably closer to something I'd be interested in than most of what it normally recommends, but I am quite startled.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 5 July 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I see, it's about Mary Magdalene (who is kind of hot right now--but I guess she's always been kind of hot), and I once ordered a book on sacred prostitutes; so they think there's a connection.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 5 July 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i got recommended ann coulters book, now i do read a bit of politiics and history, but never that one. EVER.

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 6 July 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The tendency to constantly recommend Harry Potter or Lord Of The Rings stuff to me is dud to say the least.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Sunday, 6 July 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep getting recommended books that I own AND that I bought from Amazon. Sheesh.

DVD Recs:

1. Dr. Strangelove (own it)
2. Amelie (I should see this)
3. Band of Outsiders (own it)
4. Three Colors Trilogy (looks good)
5. Citizen Kane (loved it)
6. Blade Runner (I remember not liking this when I was 12 or 13, probably bumped up because of my Philip K. Dick purchases)
7. Metropolis (great)
8. Solaris - Criterion Collection (I'm torn)
9. Full Metal Jacket (own it)
10. The Killers - Criterion (another I'm on the fence for)

So the DVD recommendations are classic, or close to it.

CDs:
1. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (feh)
2. Mr. Life - Emergency Rations (hmmm...)
3. Sigur Ros - () (double-feh)
4. Ryan Adams - Demolition (feh)
5. New Pornographers - Electric Version (own it, not as great as Mass Romantic)
6. Whiskeytown - Strangers' Almanac (own it)
7. Binary Star - Masters of the Universe (what the fuck?)
8. Jedi Mind Tricks - Violent By Design (who?)
9. The Shins - Oh, Inverted World (somewhere between hmm and feh, I don't think I smoke enough pot)
10. Stephen Malkmus - Pig Lib (just 'cuz I ordered three Pavement CDs...)

I'm gonna go with Dudsville here, especially since this is followed by a bunch of Coldplay/Travis/Britpop-clones.

The books are all terrible, because I haven't entered enough to get past "oh, you own one Irvine Welsh/Alan Warner/Tim O'Brien novel, here's all of them."

The books are all terrible, because I haven't entered enough to get past "oh, you own one Irvine Welsh/Alan Warner/Tim O'Brien novel, here's all of them."

That's what I hate. Plus, there's a tendency to recommend every edition of a book you already own. That's just irritating.

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 6 July 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Lately I've been going in and responding to the recommendations (clicking on "Why was I recommended this?" and then letting them know if I don't want it). I realize this lets them collect information on me, but at least I am getting more interesting recommendations. I started doing it because I got sick of seeing Captain Beefheart CDs (plus a biography with an ugly picture on the cover) recommended. (I bought one Capt. Beefheart CD through amazon.com.) Then I had to clear out some of the boring generic Latin music recommendations, including stuff I already have and don't like too much (like the Spanish Harlem Orchestra CD). Oh yeah, books about knee problems. I had a knee injury a couple years back and ordered a book about knee injuries. I have no interest in reading entire books about knee health at the moment.

Head has a new book out now, Mindless: Why Smarter Machines Are Making Humans Dumber. You may have seen an excerpt from it about Amazon in Salon last month. I’ve read the whole thing now, and I can tell you it’s almost certainly going to be the most important book I’ll read all year. In essence, it is an update on Head’s earlier work on Walmart. Rather than just use the computer to dictate when your employer needs you to work, technology is now powerful enough for management to use it to dictate exactly how workers do their jobs. For example, here’s a bit from that excerpt about what Amazon warehouse workers do all day:

Amazon’s system of employee monitoring is the most oppressive I have ever come across and combines state-of-the-art surveillance technology with the system of “functional foreman,” introduced by Taylor in the workshops of the Pennsylvania machine-tool industry in the 1890s. In a fine piece of investigative reporting for the London Financial Times, economics correspondent Sarah O’Connor describes how, at Amazon’s center at Rugeley, England, Amazon tags its employees with personal sat-nav (satellite navigation) computers that tell them the route they must travel to shelve consignments of goods, but also set target times for their warehouse journeys and then measure whether targets are met.

All this information is available to management in real time, and if an employee is behind schedule she will receive a text message pointing this out and telling her to reach her targets or suffer the consequences. At Amazon’s depot in Allentown, Pennsylvania (of which more later), Kate Salasky worked shifts of up to eleven hours a day, mostly spent walking the length and breadth of the warehouse. In March 2011 she received a warning message from her manager, saying that she had been found unproductive during several minutes of her shift, and she was eventually fired. This employee tagging is now in operation at Amazon centers worldwide.

...she had been found unproductive during several minutes of her shift, and she was eventually fired

NO job on earth is worth that kind of harassment. It is better to starve slowly in a fetal position than live like that for more than a couple of days.

(Aimless adds Amazon to his list of companies to boycott forever.)
