Is this a good solution?

I don't like to have my ringer on my cell phone turned on, so I keep it on vibrate. So whilst driving and listening to loud music, the only way to tell if I'm getting a call is to have my celly on my seat, nestled 'neath my "special place". I fear this may cause accidents, however.

Solution 2 involves leaving it in the drink holder-turned-"change hole", because when the phone vibrates, the change will also make a loud noise, henceforth I'll be able to hear it even over music.

Or I could just turn my ringer on. Or not talk whilst driving.

any ideas?

Maybe you should turn the music down.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep it on vibrate just because I wouldn't be able to hear the ringer over music and highway noise.

I also keep it between my legs, often. Or in my pocket, but then it's hard to get out if I have to take a call.

the last one is the best solution

or, you can go for a magical fourth option I like to call "take public transit and ditch your car"

Gear has a vagina?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I never thought I would see you post that statement, Alex.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm worried that I'll receive a call, and the sensation (perhaps not dissimilar to eating a particularly potent mint) might startle me so much that I would veer into a semi.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I usually call it a half-mast, but semi works.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear has a boat?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha. I borrowed a mobile phone recently, as it was the easiest way to arrange meeting at a gig. (I don't believe in the demonic boxes myself). So, after a while I got this odd sensation as if my fly was vibrating. I spent a while contemplating this, trying to think if it was the wind, or if something was seriously wrong with me. Obviously it was the mobile phone in my pocket, but I was really freaked out by it.

the joy of public transit is that your safety is in someone else's hands who is (for the most part) highly responsible and well-trained. Also, it's often on rails, so it can't accidentally veer into traffic. 40,000+ dead in auto accidents in the US every year! Vs. almost none in public transit (except suicides and medical emergencies that are unrelated to the safety of the system).

Hm!

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, and I'll just take my set of drums on the bus and hope it goes to the club, and picks me up at 2:00 a.m.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Believe me I prefer public transport and if Los Angeles had decent public transport I might indulge. But as is, the subway isn't near me and doesn't take me to where I need to go.

I've been in one major accident in L.A., involving my car spinning out and careening on two wheels and almost flipping. I was not talking on my cell phone at the time, but rather listening to some IDM promo.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I never thought I would see you post that statement, Alex.

Well, there are two reasons, really. For a start, I suffer from tinnitus in my right ear from years of volume abuse, so I'm often turnin' stuff down (especially in cars). Secondly, I only got my driver's license this year (at age 36) `cos I'm an idiotic slob. Suffice to say, when I'm at the wheel --especially driving around NYC -- as much as I love music, I need to stay focussed, so I'm constantly turning it down (lest I be overcome by the urge to air-guitar at some random moment).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Meaning: a car is an unfortunate necessity. Actually it's not all that unfortunate, because while I don't like spending the money and dealing with car problems, I love the freedom. And the private music-listenin' time.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow Alex, I just assumed you didn't drive. I hated driving in NYC the last time I was there, people are FUCKING NUTS.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, refrain from putting phone on vibrate between your legs on Public Transportation unless you like being pointed out for special opprobrium and ostracism.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I avoid public transportation because internet message boards have taught me I'm more likely to encounter self-righteous little pricks there. And because we don't really have it here.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Because NYC is where I learned to drive, I'm okay with it --- and reasonably accustomed to the fact that stuff might jump out at me at any minute and that my fellow motorists don't give a damn. Moreover, you're never really going that fast on NYC streets. I'm most uncomfortable driving on highways.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Sometimes I'll keep it on vibrate in my breast pocket while I'm driving, but I'm convinced that the ultra-cancerous heated vegawaves from the phone affects my pacemaker. AND I DON'T EVEN HAVE A PACEMAKER!

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought no-one drove in NY because there were too many cars, Alex?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

What about a flashing light? I'm sure my friend bought something you can stick to the top of the phone and it's like a blue flashing cop light, but not as big, obviously.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought no-one drove in NY because there were too many cars, Alex?

It's not the number of cars, it's the erratic, irresponsible manner in which they drive. I mean, yeah, there's a huge amount of cars, but I'd wager there are probably more in Los Angeles.

It's not cost effective to have a car in NYC, though, as it's too risky to leave'em parked on the street and garages and lots are fuckaspensive.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I was rubbishly stealing a joke from Futurama. Sorry.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, the thing emits *radiation*. I don't like to keep it near my head, let alone between my legs!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Believe me I prefer public transport and if Los Angeles had decent public transport I might indulge. But as is, the subway isn't near me and doesn't take me to where I need to go.

yeah, I hear that.
LA's metro is the most pathetic piece of crap I've ever been on. I mean, the equipment/stations are nice, it's just that it's NOT VERY USEFUL.

Of course that stems from the way LA was built and developed and "planned" (or rather wasn't). Decentralization makes good public transit nearly impossible and traffic congestion nearly mandatory.

: (

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

so then why are you always going on about this shit then?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

LAs mass transit it useful for drug users. It's almost comical the way the lines run from one purchasing venue to another. Gee, MacArthur Park to downtown to Hollywood. Tee hee!
