LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A number of local ABC television stations have decided not to broadcast an uncut version of World War II film "Saving Private Ryan" on Thursday, Veterans Day, because of concerns about its obscene language and graphic violence.

The 1998 movie by Steven Spielberg, a critical and popular success which won an Oscar for the director, has already been shown twice by ABC in its unedited form.

The Federal Communications Commission (news - web sites), which declined to comment, defended the showing in a 2002 letter to the American Family Association, ruling the film was not profane or indecent.

[...]

Citing stricter FCC (news - web sites) standards after the Super Bowl show at which singer Janet Jackson (news)'s breast was exposed, channel WOI-TV in Des Moines, Iowa, said on its Web site that it was now unclear whether "Ryan" could air before 10 p.m., which is considered the kickoff for mature content on broadcast TV...

there's like 20 stations that won't be airing this.

here's the AP article on it

said one of the station managers:

"We regret that the FCC, given its current timidity in dealing in this area, would not grant an advance waiver, which would have allowed stations like ours to run it without any question or any concern"

Saving Matt Damon

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

also, the contrast between conservative folks who'd really like to see the flick, vs conservative folks who don't want "harsh language" broadcast at a non-safe habor time.

also, it's fun how all the fears focus on the use of "fuck" inthe movie. nevermind that it's a REALLY fuckin' gorey flick, too

kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

So the FCC won't say what the rules are in advance,
you just have to go ahead and hope you don't get fined?

peepee (peepee), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

guess so!

kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

well otherwise it would be prior restraint.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

and thus against the first amendment.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's vaguely distasteful to show anyway. It seems direspectful to show a hollywood war film.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Especially when it features Meg Ryan and lipgloss.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

They're showing 'Das Boot' or 'Cross of Iron' instead

dave q (listerine), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

'seven years in tibet'

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

They should show Man of Iron

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Soldier of Orange?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I still like the first half hour.

Also, I think Stalingrad just came out on DVD.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

They can't show Das Boot, it lasts longer than Veteran;s Day itself. Down Periscope, with Kelsey Grammer, would be a better choice.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

(I have Stalingrad on DVD. x-post. Vanilla, though, I got it for Christman)

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Because it would lead to an angry mob storming Grammer's palace?

x-post

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)
