They're coming from Castle Blunkett, he'd be watching you if he could

Ol' Dirty Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm pretty certain it was the oxford street xmas light switching on thingy.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

saw these all the way over in west london last night (i was in west london, not the lights). and sudddenly remembered something i'd seen on the news about the Oxford St christmas lights that were going to change between red, green, blue and yellow in support of london's olympic bid. (although how that's going to help as opposed to, i dunno, actually building something, is beyond me). so...

last night, i was mesmerised by them. they move.

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

They are coming from Oxford Street, as a trip to Argos last night confirmed.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

They were very pretty. I was rubbernecking and constantly ran the risk of walking into things and looking like a right plank as I headed over to the swimming pool after work last night. I'm sure the actual lights aren't nearly as nice as the search lights, which were actually improved by it being a bit cloudy, as they bounced off the underside of the low cover.

i was on the 55 at Holborn and ahead you could see a single ray from the ground shooting up flashing intensively. looked very freaky, felt like i was in Neo-Tokyo.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

*now imagining biker gang whipping past the 55 smashing windows, chucking grenades etc*

robster (robster), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The thread title makes me hum:

...Spotlights in the sky in Birmingham
I wonder to myself
Burn down the disco
Hang the blessed DJ
et cetera.

I just thought I'd share that.

They are not a patch on the green laser that used to shoot out from the Millennium Dome to the Old Royal Observatory right along the Greenwich Meridian.

Do you hear me Ken? Christmas LASERS next year please!

I expect my taxes to pay for better alien defence than that.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you been attacked by an alien recently? Have you? Have you?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Greenwich laser is still on? Fantastic. On Millennium Eve, when fears of overcrowding meant Greenwich town centre was closed to anyone without a special wristband (we lived too far down the road to be issued with them), a crowd of proto-ILXors gathered on the waterfront directly under the laser to greet the triple-zero. We had the meridian, they had the Eurythmics. Fair enough.

I was watching these lights from the balcony of the Royal Festival Hall, which is a great view of London at any time, but they made it even lovelier.
