"I found *my* job through ILX!"

So, as I may have mentioned on another thread or two, I'm currently looking to change jobs. I've just been at my current job for longer than I'd ever have expected, there's no further incentive for advance -- financial or otherwise -- and the schedule isn't especially conducive to my "new reality" (read: baby). That's it in a nutshell, really. So, I've been sending out clips and resumes to various publications in the hopes of landing a writing/reporting postion....or at least something with a little more creative input.

So a couple of weeks back, after I sent a barrage of clips out to a certain mag, I got an e-mail back:

"Got your package. Strange question, though: Are you Alex in NYC?"

::gulp:::

As it turned out, this editor is a bit of a ILX lurker. Not that I didn't realize that there's a whole host of people who don't necessarily post that regularly who regularly lurk & read, but I was still surprised. It's a small world, after all.

In any case, my question is this....has anyone here ever benefited vocationally from participation on ILX? Would you ever cite your contributions to ILX to a prospective employer?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

so did you get the job?

lukey (Lukey G), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it was more of an informal chat, not a job interview (there wasn't a position open).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, that would terrify me. 'You don't post on ILX by any chance?'. Think of the posts they could have read!

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha awesome! ATTN ANYONE WITH COOL SOFTWARE CONTRACTING WORK, THE GMAIL ADDRESS IS GOOD AND I AM K-SMART.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"has anyone here ever benefited vocationally from participation on ILX?"

no. but if anyone's willing to hire a complete lazy twit for posting onILM, I AM YOUR WOMAN!

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"Got your package. Strange question, though: Are you ::gulp::: Alex in NYC?"

I'd say it's on the cards!

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

He's probably got a little shrine to you in his closet, Alex.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

A very prominent poster got me an interview a few months ago - I didn't get the job, though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone need a financial analyst?

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

so the editor might be reading this thread right now? hi editor!

not ilx, but i guess someone on sinister pointed me to a good job agency that got me my first job that led to this one eventually.. if that counts??

ken c (ken c), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I'm always here -- need any writing done? ;-)

In terms of freelance assignments, I suspect most of us who do a lot of writing have benefitted from ILX -- witness most obviously the infusion into the Village Voice, for instance. As yet however I haven't actually looked for a full-time job since 1996, so when it comes to the next step, who knows? (I am however likely to begin looking in earnest within the next few months.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

'You don't post on ILX by any chance?'. Think of the posts they could have read!

Precisely. I was immediately convinced that my shamelessly big-mouthed opinions about a variety of hot button topics might have shot any chances I had of being taken seriously right to hell. Mercifully, this was not the case.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I got a beer once for mentioning their song on ILM.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex - did your resume have "Interests - Killing Joke". That may have given you away...

3underscore (___), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

No

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

How did he know? I've had work people mention ILx to me without knowing I post and I have my full real name in my email address.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he just put two and two together.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

(a small part of me was hoping your real name was NYC or something, ah, foolish dreams.)

Anna (Anna), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

No you're think of Matt DC (who some people thought was American before we met him).

Pete (Pete), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I need a job!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

offer me a job, next year.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Putting two and two together:

"Please consider my submission and failing that may you be tormented for eternity in the bowels of hell.

Regards,
Alex Whatevermylastnameis"

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Matt was a big Dashboard Confessional fan.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone wnat a job in the wibbly wobbly world of TV.

Ed (dali), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

What an alarming scenario, Alex.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, what if the guy's a Scout Niblett fan?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone wnat a job in the wibbly wobbly world of TV.

Calum to thread.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I am actually serious but this isn't a glamarous media job this is a boring technical front line job, but it's there for anyone wanting a job in London.

Ed (dali), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I do I Do!
Except I'm in L.A.
Actually I'd like a wibbly-wobbly job anywhere.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Teletubbies? Bah, too late for that joke to work. Yes, I do. Or anything else. Is it very technical? I have never benefitted from ILX. I once applied to be Markelby's assistant or something.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Really??? What type of job (he says knowing that the odds of him actually being able to accept a job in another country right now are slim to nil assuming that the company is considering hiring someone from the US)?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

No you're think of Matt DC (who some people thought was American before we met him).

The first thing Phil-Two said to me on Friday was "I thought you were American?"

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

EU candidates only (or UK work permit whatever), start as soon as possible, mail me.

Ed (dali), Monday, 22 November 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, if you can get stuff into the NYer you can get stuff in anywhere.

Dan, Ed's TV company might not pay you as much as you are used to. Yes it'll be in pounds and yes the dollar seems to be on a twofer special to those of us shopping in pounds but London v. v. expensive. But it's good jobs for the tech-minded and you wear Matrix-type clothes to work.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 22 November 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

there has just been a pay rise for that job, not as much as the pay rise for my job

Ed (dali), Monday, 22 November 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

This is why I post anonymously.

asdf troll, Monday, 22 November 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

bingo!

amateur!!st, Monday, 22 November 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone need a designer?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 22 November 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, if you can get stuff into the NYer you can get stuff in anywhere.

You'd think that, wouldn't you. It's turning out to be a bit harder than that, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 22 November 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, yeah - my advice for you would mostly be stay away from a just-music magazine and you'll have more to offer them.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Try Jane or Details. I know some untalented people with big heads who write for both.

asdf troll, Monday, 22 November 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you have to be untalented to write for Jane.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ASDF, remind me again why your being anonymous on here is strictly due to employment concerns.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

But Jeff Johnson writes for Jane!

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Strictly? Who said "strictly?"

asdf troll, Monday, 22 November 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't know that, Jay. I was just going by the couple of issues I had read.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff Johnson? And who is said person?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I should probably take this opportunity to say that if there are any editors out there actively looking for writers, please don't hesitate to get in touch. I shan't say the words "Killing" nor "Joke," I promise. Or at least not in unison.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the one thing I didn't take you for, alex in NYC, was a compromiser.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't say I'd renounce anything, RJG, just that I wouldn't exhort during a job interview.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 22 November 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Anybody looking for a good tech writer/editor in Seattle?

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Monday, 22 November 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, did Killing Joke change much since "Requiem" and "Wardance"?

asdf troll, Monday, 22 November 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, did Killing Joke change much since "Requiem" and "Wardance"?

They've come full circle since then.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 22 November 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

So that new yellow one with the clown sounds like the stuff I heard way back when?

asdf troll, Monday, 22 November 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned: This column is probably Jeff Johnson's finest moment. And I don't even like football!

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Monday, 22 November 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

So that new yellow one with the clown sounds like the stuff I heard way back when?

Well, suffice to say, the new one (the fabulous album in the awful, awful, indefensible sleeve) is much closer in sound to their first album than most of the records they've put out since, say, 1983, apart from maybe Extremities.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 22 November 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

(Also, Jeff's blog)

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Monday, 22 November 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Eep, a McSweeney's link = I am greatly suspicious. Still, though...

*reads first few paragraphs of said NFL story*

...yeah, KINDA funny I guess. I dunno, I've just been reading Michael Lewis on the 1996 presidential campaign and in comparison Johnson is reference-happy hit-you-over-head HA! stuff. I'll look at it again later, maybe.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 November 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

bingo. i take it you never heard back from S**L**??

ke[hm (kephm), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a senior editor's email address for J4NE. I might get in trouble if I give it out, though.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I would rather have ILX get me laid than a job.

Actually wait, no.
I'd rather have ILX get me a job GETTING LAID for $$.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just been reading Michael Lewis on the 1996 presidential campaign
That book is great (but it gets a little unfocused after the primaries).

And I do occasionally write for a local mag because of my ILX participation. It's amazing, because I think I come across as practically illiterate on here.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, I'm no great fan of Johnson's or anything, I just thought that Nicole saying that all Jane writers were no good (which she clarified) was a bit hasty.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

ilx = nope, Freaky trigger = helped a lot, yes :o)

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

What, the squirrel article?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

indeed, that and one I wrote ages ago about something I made with peas and bacon.

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd rather have ILX get me a job GETTING LAID for $$.

Nice work if you can get it.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

You say that now; wait until Becky Lucas shows up at your front door with a bucket full of quarters and a french tickler assortment pack.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like to take this opportunity to offer the Amazing Randy a job. He's just the sort of chap we need.
