Has anyone ever set up a music venue of any kind - legit or not - in the UK?

If I was to rent out a commercial space and then put on some sort of club there then what regulations (fire, max number of persons, regs to fo with the use of a space etc) would I have to conform to and what laws could they bust me under? I'm in the uk and The criminal justice act doesn't apply as it doesn't apply to buildings so I'm stuck as to what to look at next. Has anyone done this kind of thing before? Has anyone set up a venue of any kind who knows what kind of things apply? Is it possible to do this legally without too much official stuff? How badly could I get busted assuming that I conform to all of the relevant safety regulations? Alcohol will not be sold or even given away.

Obviously I'm debating about how legit I can make this. I prepared to do it if it can't be done 100% legit. I just don't want anyone to get hurt or to get arrested.

I wasn't sure whether to put this on ILM or not but there are issues here which go beyond just music and I reckon there are people here who may know about this stuff who maybe don't read ILM.

It depends entirely on your local council's planning regulations, I believe. Contact their planning office and ask them for information.

Thanks. Do you know how variable the regulations are between coucnils?
