Obscure Children's Cartoons

This weekend, Pam mentioned The Raccoons, a Canadian childrens cartoon that screened in the UK in the early 80s. Rich Little did the voices, and it was a favourite of mine and my brother's - my dad taped a couple of eps and we watched them incessantly. I remember them being hugely, *hugely* funny, and they are now available on DVD - YUSSS!

I just told my brother about this, and we started talking about other favourite kids cartoons... One was 'the phantom tollbooth' which, criminally, is unavailable on DVD.

The other is Orbit The Astrodog, the adventures of a bumbling dog astronaut. He was vaguely neurotic and Woody Allen-esque (the one thing i remember about the vid clearly is a joke about something disappearing into thin air, and Orbit noting that the air was particularly thin up in space. I have searched the net, and as far as i can tell there is NO reference made to this cartoon anywhere... Did I dream it???

The oddest cartoon of the 1970s?

Den Dadaismus in seinem Lauf hält weder Ochs noch Esel auf... (Dada), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Quote:

"It concerned the adventures of an ovoid crystalline entity which liked to play music and draw things from inside an egg shaped outer shell... The Egg shaped character was called Ludwig, a name given to him by the weird man with the binoculars and hat, who hangs out in the bushes spying on Ludwig and the forest animals"

I remember seeing The Raccoons on video about four or five years before it started appearing on British TV - our class at infants school was shown it as an end-of-term entertainment.

(it was, indeed, classic)

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Raccoons = classic. Was it Cyril Sneer? Did I make that up?

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it was Cyril Sneer

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Astro Boy, anyone? This is admittedly not that obscure, but the version shown on Canadian TV was translated and dubbed out of Montreal. I understand there was an American translation, too, but I never got to see it.

I was also a BIG fan of the anime series Force Five. This was my first exposure to the "giant robot" anime genre, and it predated the Transformers and Gobots by a good three or four years.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

animalympics!

I adored this! And the Graham Gouldman songs weren't so bad. It wasn't until many years later that I discovered the folks behind this were also behind Tron!

Billy Crystal imitating Howard Cosell was only appropriate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, lauren (from up there). animalympics! no one ever remembers this. there was some part of it, the lovey dovey scene with the long distance running cheetas(?) i think, that made me feel all funny inside. in an uncomfortable way. oh, and what ned said.

also, fuck transf0rmers and fuck go-b0ts.

The Mighty Orbots!

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

the lovey dovey scene with the long distance running cheetas(?) i think, that made me feel all funny inside. in an uncomfortable way.

It was actually a female cheetah (with, in retrospect, a disturbingly hot body) and a French goat. INTERSPECIES BESTIALITY.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Raggety Ann & Andy's Musical Adventure
Ultra-psychedelic shit with a giant living candy swamp and some some of 2" king of chutes and ladders? Only saw it once decades ago...

damn philip beat me. best theme tune ever bar none. i have the cd, but spent years and years looking for the 12 inch.
thank god for audiogalaxy else i'd have gone bananas.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost) Yeah, same here. (Though it did not have a variant of my name in it. ;-) "RAGGEDY" Ann, etc.) A very strange film, I remember the 'rag dolly' song and a scene where that king blows up into a huge balloon and then explodes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i spent many years thinking that i'd dreamed/hallucinated animalympics, until i found expensive bootleg copies on ebay.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

It actually gets rerun from time to time on the Disney Channel, I gather. At least that's where I last saw it by chance years ago.

Man, remember the main commentator being a Henry Kissinger turtle? Strange stuff. Also, the Noah's Ark disco.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The Raccoons wasn't obscure - it was on telly every saturday morning, right before Going Live. OK, maybe it was obscure if you, unlike me, you had parents who let you lie in at weekends. I had weirdo parents who objected to their children being in bed, but didn't mind them sitting in front of the goggle box for half the day, stuffing their faces.

This is the Evergreen forest, quiet, peaceful, serene... that is until Bert Raccoon wakes up! Luckily he has some good friends to help him out. Life would be simple in the forest except for (dum dum daaaaah) Cyril Sneer, and his life would be simple except for... the raccoons!

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

more weird animalympics memories: one of the atheletes (i can't even remember what kind of animal he was) getting stranded in a snowstorm and singing an impassioned song while having hypothermia-induced visions.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

That was the weiner dog skiier, wasn't it? And I think he didn't sing it, the song just showed up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

jesus. what a strange cartoon.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved how the weightlifting competition was staged as a beauty contest.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, that raggedy ann with frenchie from grease was some crazy shit. i remember a black and white scene where the sound goes weird. though it's made me want black and white checkerboard tiles in my kitchen ever since. if anyone can find a copy of this - insta-FAP!
wait, i'm bidding on this on ebay right now. THANXOR A LOT ILX!

i think i must've watched animalympics on the then-new Home Box Office. then they'd show the making of the theme to Home Box Office, with the little model town and the camera swooping down over it and the sparkly stuff and all. and then they'd play Video Jukebox and show "Mickey" or "Fishheads." ahhh.

i was a big The Snorks fan. i wouldn't call it obscure, but no one i ever mention it to remembers.i did an excellent Occy impression.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw the snorks on ice.

animalympics = hbo. totally.

what about the disney channel's video jukebox? they'd always show "private eyes," by hall & oates, with a bunch of mickey mouse animation synched up.

I had it taped and watched it continuously. it was so great. ..wish they'd DVD that.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

wasn't a cartoon (though it was "animated"), but i was completely weirded out and fascinated by Clyde Frog. total mid-day PBS fare. stuff i'd watch while home sick. Clyde, a cheap cheap cheap marionette, was a real dumbass who would always do the most dangerous and wrong thing. like, get hit by a car or something. in this way, kids could learn lessons about life and whatnot. don't get hit by cars like Clyde here! i liked it when you could watch his feet "walking." totally bizarre. no one remembers this stuff either. (except lauren and ned perchance?)

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

with the exception of some south park character that i can only assume was inspired by MY clyde frog, there's only about 8 mentions of the show itself, Clyde Frog Show, apparently, on the entire interwebiverse. i wish i could find a picture to show. there is a program guide from ETV, mississippi public television (which is where i saw it as a kid, me being a mississippi boy) but it's a huge pdf. maybe later. here's a brief video catalog description. how fun is this?!?!

Early morning tv for me in a Canadian suburb was starting the morning off with Tales from the Wizard of Oz, followed by a good dose of The Hilarious House of Frightenstein (which was just a vehicle for Billy Van, RIP). And occasionally Rocket Robin Hood.

I loved Animalympics - wonder if it would stand up to my cynical scrutiny now however.

I had a Richie Rich cartoon video when I was young and I watched it every day. I came across it in a box of stuff recently and overcome with excitement and nostalgia I put it on, swearing to Kev that he'd love it. It was shockingly bad. It went in the bin.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

animalympics - it was quite desolate, wasn't it? i remember the russian acrobat character sighing at one point and staring off camera, musing wistfully "I pine for my younger, simpler days". did this happen, or did my dad somehow score a bootleg copy with the score from a Bergman movie accidentally soldered on?

This show is about a teenager who got into a really bad accident with his car and became fused with it. He turned into a sports car when he got hot. The only way he could change back to a human was to cool down.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The Egg shaped character was called Ludwig, a name given to him by the weird man with the binoculars and hat

And I thought it was Beethoven, cause he played a violin and stuff. Should've known it was simpler than that; a weird man gave him the name.

revive, inspired by the release of the miyazaki stuff on DVD, especially Vally of the Wind, which i remember being unlike anything i'd seen at the time and couldn't even remember the name until the recent re-release news.

and a few others (level of obscurity kinda low, probably):

G Force: Battle of the Planets was awesome!

and a couple from Nickelodeon:
The Mysterious Cities of Gold (feat. esteban, mendoza, etc.)
Danger Mouse

never cared for Inspector Gadget, but i did watch quite a bit of Turkey TV, which was sorta the forerunner to Comedy Channel (later to be re-dubbed Comedy Central) and it's Short Attention span Theater. just short bits from stand up routines and stuff. actually, caught A Fish Called Wanda on tv the other night and was reminded how often they'd show the kevin kline/michael palin fish eating torture bit on SAST. every fuck1ng day several times a day! ugh.

and how about the Herculoids? Wasn't that connected w/Frankenstein Jr?

I remember fighting w/my sister over cartoons in competing time slots. TS: Underdog VS The Beatles.

Haha, Dangermouse is like the least obscure cartoon ever over here(I am assuming that you are not from the UK due to your spelling of theatre...). Undeniably great, however.

I think I said the Space Sentinels last time we did this, and was relieved to find that someone else could verify its existence, as every time I have had this conversation in real life (and I was at university for four years so that would be a lot) no-one ever remembered it.
