Freeware HTML editor

I'm trying to update an existing website on a shoestring (i.e. nonexistent) budget, so am looking for a freeware HTML editor that will allow me to make some basic text/image amends to the exisiting pages.

So far, I've found this slighly clumsy programme called EasyHTML by someone called TONIARTS - which is great but gives me a headache.

Has anyone got any other suggestions?

If using a mac, BBEdit (or simpletext).

Can you still get "Arachnophilia"?

vim

emacs!

The best Windows editor I've come across was called Programmers' File Editor, or PFE.

(I still prefer emacs, though)

This is cool, I've been using Coffee Cup but I'd like to switch to something else when my "trial period" is up.

I like arachnophilia myself, but the newest version is a java thing and doesn't run as well as the previous windows only version.

There used to be a beefed up Notepad called NoteTab Pro for windows that did tag colouring and had good search and replace and stuff, I liked it.

Be careful saving between unix and windows/mac if you are doing this - line breaks and control characters are different and sometimes a re-save can foul things up (if you use word wrap for eg).

Does it have to be freeware? Dreamweaver has a 30 day trial.

One of the things I liked about PFE was its line-ending handling - you just select what style of line-ending you want for a file, and there are no problems after that.

(I had an awful time in my previous job once when my boss took a file with Unix line-endings that used the Mac line-ending character as a subfield separator, tried to edit it in BBEdit, and completely fucked it entirely. Of course, I was the person who had to sort it out)

I like to write my markup on the back of roofing fliers and then scan it in.

Of course, *ed* is the *standard* text editor.

BBEdit ain't free, unfortunately. Also, if you just want to do HTML, I would HIGHLY recommend skEdit (http://www.skti.org). It's cheap ($20something) and really really good for (X)HTML/CSS/PHP. Like, REALLY good. Not the best for serious coding, but that's what vim is for anyway.

I am, of course, assuming that you're on a Mac (I mean, you wouldn't have asked this question if you were running Linux/UNIX). If you're running Windows that's your own fault.

Thanks for these. I don't actually know HTML - but can just about cope with making text amends to an existing page. I just need something that will let me do this with the minimum of fuss and confusion!
