JUDE LAW HAS A TATTOO INSPIRED BY ALAN MOORE

NB the actual Watchmen movie is apparently going to be directed by Paul Greengrass instead of Aronofsky now, see here

the most important part of this is still the fact that sky captain has a rorschach tattoo.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

How did he do that? Did he fold his arm in half?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Does it change constantly as you look at it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

He should barge into the Ian Curtis biopic and insist on only doing scenes where you can see the tattoo.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be a pretty excellent casting choice, assuming Law bulks up just a tiny bit.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Empire sat down with Law recently to talk Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow.
During our chat, Law revealed that he used to be an avid comics collector — which is a surprise, given that Law is good-looking, slim and has a girlfriend. "I still go to comic shops, Forbidden Planet and look through back issues of the ones I love," he told Empire. "I was a big fan of Johnny Nemo and Strange Days, Parallax, you know those? But I haven't gotten into anything recently, not like I did with From Hell and Watchmen."

(How dare all you good-looking slim men with girlfriends enjoy comics! Out, out!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you saying he's gay?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Jude Law to play Dan Pussey.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, I totally misread that.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

My work here is done, again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I have seen nice-looking girls in Forbidden Planet. It gives me little hope, but still.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if a Watchmen movie could even be good. Nice casting regardless.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if a Watchmen movie could even be good.

I'd have to agree. Two questions in particular:

1) Period piece or 'updated'?

2) What gets pruned from the story first?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I have seen nice-looking girls in Forbidden Planet. It gives me little hope, but still.
-- B.A.R.M.S. (b4rim4_...) (webmail), November 23rd, 2004. (link)

It doesn't count if they are inthe comic.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

2) What gets pruned from the story first?

The Minutemen, probably.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I only saw part of the movie (cuz, ummm, I was really drunk and blacked out half way through, woke up on the other side of downtown walking and confused) but I realized while watching it that The Incredibles is probably as close to a Watchmen movie as you can get.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd assume the pirate comic has to go...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I realized while watching it that The Incredibles is probably as close to a Watchmen movie as you can get.

Pretty much, nearly everyone's mentioned that if they know both. And I really don't mind, it was a very clever use of the basic idea.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

(Though the pirate stroy is quite a big part of the comic, it's really just an allegory of the main story, and I think the film might still work without it.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

stroy = story

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah they'd have to get rid of the pirate comic (and basically everything that goes on at that newstand)

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Would they have the same band at Madison Square Garden, though?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to think an animated mini-series was the only way to go, but really I think its wholly unnecessary and foolish to even attempt making an adaptation. Moore uses the comic medium so well that it would take a genius to replicate it in a manner that wasn't tedious (if you try to replicate all of Moore's tricks then you're ignoring the benefits of the medium you're using). Stuff like The Incredibles, where you just swipe a concept and flesh it out with a new story, is much more rewarding.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

As an okay-looking, not-fat comic book reader with a girlfriend, I resent the implication of that article.

Jude Law would be an excellent Ozymandias, I think. Was that giant Watchmen casting thread on ILE or ILC? Or both?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

the best comic adaptations are the ones that really capture the archetpye rather than a specific story. Watchmen uses more complex variations of comic archetypes so you don't have that safety net. I doubt they'll ever actually make this, they've been trying for 15 years.

x-post I'm guessing ILC, cuz I sure don't remember having read that thread.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

uses more complex variations of common comic archetypes

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

whatever, there is no way it could be as bad as the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (which, granted, isn't even half the comic that the Watchmen is)

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(SPOILERS!!!)

I don't think they should/could get rid of the whole newstand angle. I mean, the scene right before the monster is teleported into NYC, when everyone tries to stop the lesbian couple from fighting is perhaps the most crucial moment of the comic. It's like Moore saying he hasn't gone from a left-wing anarchist to a total cynic yet.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I still really want to know about my first question and what y'all think. Would they change the temporal setting? (I could easily see movie studio argument why they would have to -- 'alternate history twenty years ago, I don't get it!' -- but also it would take some very deft work to specifically set up *all* of the alternate history implications.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Tuomas, my point is that its futile to even adapt it, as they'd HAVE to remove key moments like that.

I actually enjoyed LOEG, though I've never read the comic. The jokes were so consistently weak that it didn't bother me, since I never was disappointed, and the characters were resonant enough as archetypes that I could imagine being inspired to create my own stories for them if I was a kid. I'd be curious if some brainy kids really dug it.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually enjoyed LOEG, though I've never read the comic.

well you aren't missing much. the first story was alright, I gave up on the second when Moore inflicted a really bad sex scene on me.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I flipped through it at a store (I haven't followed comics since Sandman ended - too expensive, but occasionally I consider a TPB) and I wasn't knocked out.

If I had to write a Watchmen strip, I'd throw away everything except that a retired hero Ozymandias is trying to create a utopia and Rorshach, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre and Dr. Manhattahn get together again after the death of the Comedian. We see some of their specific flashbacks (Manhattan/Comedian in Vietnam, the riots, etc), but everything involving the Minutemen is gone (including all the Silk Spectres/Comedian fatherhood stuff).

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Watchmen strip,

SCRIPT. I do need to spell-check.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"I gave up on the second when Moore inflicted a really bad sex scene on me."
Which was fortunately interrupted by a giant mutant Rupert the Bear?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

was it? I couldn't get passed the saggy OLD MAN ASS

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes that was extremely disturbing, and I didn't like how Mina was a super sleuth divorced vampire vixen until suddenly she's all agog over some 70 year old man.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Mina/Dorian Gray bits were the only horribly good parts of the horribly bad League movie.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be happy enough if greengrass makes rorschach into enough of a bourne-type sub-superhero type that his action is exciting to watch. This is something aronofsky would have fucked up royally so I'm glad he's out, actually. They'll keep the whole part leading up to the jailbreak.

rorschach also has to be kept as compelling as he is in the comic, which will be tough since masking works almost completely opposite in print as it does on film. in the comic rorschach can have an ugly face but his mask makes him into Everyman - in a film this effect will be reversed to an extent because his FACE will have to be something we like and his MASK will make it harder to empathize with him.

the real character interaction going on in Watchmen is between Rorschach, Ozymandias and Dr. Manhattan, and rorschach is who you're supposed to pull for (blah blah moral relativism has two faces blah blah) - so casting him and handling his screen time is tricky, but so are all the scenes with Dr. Manhattan and Silk Spectre, how the hell do you explain why dr. manhattan chooses his course of action without tranquilizing the audience smack in the middle of the movie?

gah

I hope there's not a lot of time-shifting in the film
that's one thing that really helped X-Men and Spiderman not suck balls

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Jude Law as Adrian Veidt?
Naaaaw.

Though Nicholas Cage as Rorschach might work.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 23 November 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Geez, Tom.

If Nick Cage is anywhere near this movie (which he shouldn't be) (I don't even want him within 500 yards of the set) (how about shoving his ass in a bomb shelter with some beans & Zima?), he'd be the Comedian.

My suggestions here (Fantasy Film Casting -- Watchmen) are meh. Paul Giamatti as Nite Owl, though, would be the stuff. And then you get Thomas Haden Church as Ozy, and it's Sideways II!

(Tom, if you could compare me to a single-celled organism, that'd be great, thanks.)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

David R. when compared to all known single-celled organisms is quite large and complex.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 23 November 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

vin diesel IS NOT dr manhattan

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Never thought of Selleck as the Comedian, but a total inversion of Thomas Magnum would rock pretty hard. Jude Law would actually be good as Rorshach, he scuzzed up pretty well in Road to Perdition.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw a couple of minutes of "The Wool Cap" the other night -- Macy was close to The Look already.

Rorschach actually does have Kramer hair.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

If he could play the part convincingly, John Ratzenberger would look great as the Comedian.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The Norman Lear edition:

Archie Bunker = Comedian
Meathead = Nite Owl
Gloria = Silk Spectre
George Jefferson = Rorshach

Silk Spectre-Zoraxx
Ozymandias-Carl

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Brilliant. Although surely Carl and Master Shake should switch places? Carl would make a good Comedian too.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Zorak should be Ozymandias and Meatwad should be Silk Spectre!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

And the giant monster @ the end can be Glenn Danzig!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I was trying to get the comedic zing in at the end there, but Carl and Master Shake should be switched.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

And Master Shake should be Rorshach!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

(Actually Ben Affleck should be Rorshach and Jared Leto should be Nite Owl.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Rorshach = Augustus Gloop
Dr. Manhattan = Mike TeaVee

actually it would appear that Simon Pegg is going to be cast as Rorschach, so this thread is basically moot, none of the jokes were as absurd as the reality. I don't think anybody here could actually have come up with Simon Pegg vs. Jude Law IN OUR LIFETIME much less wearing funny outfits in a picture inspired by Alan Moore.

actually, if Rorschach = Tim from Spaced, Mike from Spaced would make a good Comedian and Duane (Peter Serafinowicz) would make a good Dr Manhatten (Shaun Of The Dead showed he has the build and the nakedness for the part).

Daisy and Marsha could be SS 1 and 2.

or maybe Bilbo (Bill Bailey) as The Comedian and Mike as Night Owl.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Couldn't find a way to phrase it.
(I'm amazed nobody else made a Nicholas Cage as Superman crack long before I even hinted at it. Jude Law as Ozymandias is almost as bad*.)
But anyhow...
being completely and utterly non-sarcastic...
1) William H. Macy might look kinda like Rorschach's alter-ego, but Kevin Spacey was born to play Rorschach's alter-ego.
2) Would it be obvious to point of cliche to assert that Robert Redford (with enough makeup to subtract a few years off him) play Adrian Veidt? I have this funny feeling thats who Dave Gibbons was thinking of when he drew the character. (I have no clue who Alan Moore was thinking of.)
3) As for the flashbacks of a still living Comedian...Nick Nolte**? (anyone who sez Kurt Russell, Dennis Quaid or...heaven forbid...David Hasselhoff...will get dragged away by thier topknot and beaten about the head with a solid brass Nite Owl figurine.)

* = Note, I like Jude Law, I just don't think he fits this part. Too wet behind the ears. Not "Pharoah Ramses" enough for my taste.
