I wuv it and yet… it's kind of lame, no?

mark s, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seems sorta silly to me, but I have some friends who swear by it. I think I'd rather swear at it.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wanted to like it, I really did, but I just don't. It doesn't grab me.

DG, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It is pretty silly, but I watch it once in awhile. I like muppets, whatcanIsay? It has awesome muppets. None Beaker league, but still kewl.

Nicole, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, muppets are great, and serious muppets can work, thus The Dark Crystal, one of the best movies of all time. These muppets I'm not sure about.

Now Fraggles in space, that would rock.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

farscape rules! best thing on tele at the mo' behind the s'pranos and buffy

luv to play 'spot the former neighbours/homeandaway/matrix extra'

jon, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Farscape=classic, though all the 3rd season episodes on Moya were kinda sketchy.

I saw a great Chiana at a Halloween party this year.

I think you summed up nicely why I don't watch TV anymore.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Farscape" is fluffy fun. Too bad what happened to the sexy plant chick...

Dan Perry, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmm..Ned a question. Have you ever actually watched Buffy?

It's just that most people seem to dismiss the show without ever actually watching a single episode.

JC, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bits. I should say I don't hate Buffy, but I can't get myself worked up over it to investigate in further detail. Enough friends and coworkers of mine worship it, though, so I figure there's some sort of appeal. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought Buffy was silly WB teen crap til I actually sat down and watched an episode last season. It's so witty and humane, it really does put most other programmes to shame. Now I am an insane Buffy addict.

Nic, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was actually thinking more about the general question of why I don't watch TV (or go to movies much if it all) and something occurred to me -- I don't like being booked into a time, if you will. Over the past few years I've really been disenchanted with the idea of handing over my time to something that demands you see it then and there, obviously much more a problem with movies in theaters. For TV, VCR taping doesn't help because then you have to see it eventually anyway and in the case of continuing rather than stand-alone-episode series very quickly at that to avoid getting lost (and I gather with Buffy it's a very detailed plot structure that requires weekly attention, so I'll give it credit for its ambitions).

Quite why I feel this way is unclear to me. I can't put my finger on its origins, but it has to have something to do with my general shrugging off of things, though I won't go so far as to say it's the only reason. I think it's telling that my preferred media of music and reading can be enjoyed simultaneously, at my own pace. Hmm...this is all very curious to me, very strange.

Tell me why (or why not) I should seek out episodes of this show.

I haven't seen more than 5 minutes of it, and it looked lame. But appearances can be deceiving and I know so many people who love this show.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It is lame but it's also fun.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

the dvds seem to be extraordinarily expensive, and thus hard to come by even in video stores. too bad, because as you say, it is lame but also fun.

I have the complete set of Farscape on DVD after discovering the show on the sci-fi channel about eighteen months ago. It's a thoroughly enjoyable SF series with great acting, storylines and special effects, as well as being a highly refreshing antidote, IMO, to the sterility of the Star Trek franchise and the leaden pomposity of Babylon 5.

Farscape starts off as being fairly insubstantial (though highly entertaining) eye candy and develops into an expansive character-driven drama with many audacious twists and turns in the ongoing narrative.

So, more "pinnacle of aesthetic achievement" for me. If anyone wants to check out the series, the new "Starburst edition" DVDs currently being released (they're about two thirds through season three) are quite cheap.

god I love this show SO hard.

I get almost teary when I think back on how awesome SciFi Fridays were, back when the SciFi Channel spelled their name correctly

Crichton - Doc Martens in space!
Aeryn Sun - best female role to happen to tv sci fi since Kira Nerys on DS9

VegemiteGrrl, Thursday, 24 March 2011 04:55 (fifteen years ago)

I heard it got cancelled - is there any sort of closure? Or does it suffice in that Firefly sorta way, where everything is so witty & charming that you could watch things entirely out of order and love the series anyway?

(p.s. - i liek firefly)

Radical Adults Lick Based God Style (kelpolaris), Thursday, 24 March 2011 05:11 (fifteen years ago)

they did a movie after the cancellation which I felt tied things up well but still left you feeling like NOOOOO OMG DONT GO

VegemiteGrrl, Thursday, 24 March 2011 05:17 (fifteen years ago)

that's good enough, i guess. been meaning to pick it up for a while but i just have to finish fawning over jewel staite first. i have a couple years to go.

Radical Adults Lick Based God Style (kelpolaris), Thursday, 24 March 2011 05:31 (fifteen years ago)

you will find Claudia Black a worthy followup to Jewel :)
and Jon Crichton is definitely cut from the same cloth as Mal aka Capt Tightpants

firefly is a great stepping stone for Farscape, come to think of it.

VegemiteGrrl, Thursday, 24 March 2011 05:35 (fifteen years ago)

how many people do you suppose will watch this just because abed on community thinks it is great

j., Thursday, 24 March 2011 05:58 (fifteen years ago)

not enough!

VegemiteGrrl, Thursday, 24 March 2011 06:01 (fifteen years ago)

I started watching it last year & think I d/lded most of it. I just didn't get past a certain point, not sure how certain that point was.
Just gave up on it & left with the feeling its naffness outweighed other qualities. Maybe I should have another look at some point.

think I may have moved on to Sons of Anarchy, weeds, the wire & The Sopranos.

& now watching Deadwood & Carnivale.

Started watching Lexx at the same time as it though. & now wondering why.

Stevolende, Thursday, 24 March 2011 09:09 (fifteen years ago)

ohdear i signed up for netflix and all of farscape is available for streaming... when i first watched this show it was via friends' VHS tapes, taped off tv, so i missed much of season 1, which my friends said wasn't a big deal, but i'm watching it now and like it - more hokey than later seasons but isn't that often the case with sci-fi tv, and it's super entertaining at any rate - this show totally freakin holds up. i really need to try v hard not to watch it all day though...

hilarious how long crichton hangs on to wearing his iasa gear
(this show is possibly my biggest nerd-indulgence)

oh man this show would be even better if I was stoned. I already am hoping that someone on youtube has made a super cut of every time the little muppet spits/sneezes on someone.

You should definitely watch Dark Crystal

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 18 May 2014 16:09 (twelve years ago)

def Dark Crystal

then Farscape

did u like the Creature Shop Challenge show, Mordy?

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 18 May 2014 16:47 (twelve years ago)

yes v much

Mordy, Sunday, 18 May 2014 17:14 (twelve years ago)

Farscape dragged 1 season too long (3 seasons is some kind of optimum for lost spaceships: BSG, Voyager, Lexx, possible exception Red Dwarf). Still the whole remains the most emotionally engaging sci-fi TV of my lifetime (tho Babylon 5 beats it on space opera plotting).
