I'm playing a gig tonight and its my first in over a year.

i'm drinking some beers and listening to hip-hop right now.

we haven't really had time to practise recently so it could all go wrong.

what do you people do to settle any nerves before big things?

though it's hard to this when you're nervous, EAT WELL (but not excessively).

Before readings I drink, probably a bit too much, but anything to banish the bumbling blushing tongue-tied idiot who would otherwise be up on the stage.

I also put on make-up. As I don't normally wear any, I suppose that counts as a bit of a ritual and I do find it calming. Though obviously you need a steady hand, which is not always available (see above)...

slow, stoned cord-wrapping; careful double-checking; pants picking; chaos magick

Wise words. That's pretty much my system.

I have a tendency to get quite battered before redings. It's not a ritual as such, it just always seems to sort of happen.

gah "readings", I am not currently battered, I hasten to add.

Oh I find the solitary bus journey with a beer or two is perfect for grounding oneself before a big event. It upsets me if the bus is busy or noisy or if I meet anyone I know. I like to be alone with the beer and my ipod.

If I'm playing music, i generally have at most one drink before playing. But I have gotten smashed during readings. One of the greatest was a group reading I did, where there were five of us sitting and reading, and we had a huge bottle of Maker's Mark and we drank before and during the reading. That was the most drunk I had been in ages. It was fantastic.

Playing music: one giant coffee and 2 Schlitzes pre-gig is ideal. I generally go for more, though (of the beer).
