What have you learnt from ilx?

Among many other things, I've learnt that American toilet paper is less strong than UK toilet paper because Americans wipe differently. Also countless books and music and things like that. What stands out for you?

beanz (beanz), Friday, 26 November 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

well, ilx wasn't exactly the place i "learnt" it, more like a place that confirmed this embryonic vague doubt i already had -- that the world is indeed samll, and - in a few peculiar aspects - positively flat.

...oh yes, also that other thing -- that russians love their children too.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 26 November 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I learned how to love again.

I learned about the spirit of Christmas.

No-one learned enough about Dunnocks, though.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 26 November 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

On a similarly scatalogical note as Beanz, I learned that people wipe in different way - even within my own family. I would have expected siblings, at least, to develop similar techniques when toilet trained. Thank you ILX.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 26 November 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 26 November 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Things learnt:

* I'm not sure if I feel comfortable with discovering too many people liking the same things as I do, a few people is okay mind. I always have a sense of relief when my nominations don't score too highly in those top 100 etc lists, and finding that I don't particularly like the winning choices. Oh dear. I might've known this already.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 26 November 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I know why digital radio is that little bit slower on the uptake than normal radio. I have yet to learn how to use this to my advantage.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 26 November 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I learned that politics are still silly. Especially on ILX forums.

Spinktor, Friday, 26 November 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Questioning peoples' musical tastes is best left to the British, or at least pepople who use words like "dire" or "rubbish" as often as possible.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 26 November 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I still dont understand the terms "big up" and "(insert noun) Massive".

Spinktor, Friday, 26 November 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I learned that I'm much happier staying away from anything ILX-related

Gator Magoon (Chris Barrus), Friday, 26 November 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom, r u speaking metaphore? or hyperbole, rather?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 26 November 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Some learned from ilx, others simply reinforced:

- that there is hope for the written word

- that people I don't know are funnier than the people I do

- that many things that are important to others will remain a mystery to me

- that insularity and herd mentality are inevitable even in relatively anonymous 'communities'

- that only the most dilligent, skillful and careful writers can make a point without someone misinterpreting it or seeing it as a basis for judging that person as a whole

- that the world is massive and I'm missing out on a shitload of fun and interesting things to do and see

- that racial/religious/national prejudice is alive and well

- that I'm not alone in having a fucked up bunch of conflicting values

- that many people hold extreme views about issues that don't directly affect them

- that I'm less willing to have my opinion changed than I thought I was

- lots of good music, reading, cooking and travel tips

Note: many of the general negative aspects above apply as much to me as anyone else. I'm not having a go.

- oh, and "fuck washing a hat"

eg.

iwhy digital radio is that little bit slower on the uptake than normal radio
hey is there a DAB thread? i wanted to start soemthing about that

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 26 November 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

- that, as in the the wider world, people are much more likely to react than reflect, and that this results in massive amounts of bullshit rather than constructive efforts at change

- that rememberances of threads of ally's ass past will make me smile always, whereas the latest thread relating to a region/class/media-based experience will make me vmoit and wonder why Ossama hasn't done more during the off-peak TV season

- that if all the energy spent on ascertaining which threads were or weren't work safe was spent on doing work, people could get home sooner to spend their own spare time looking at whatever they wanted

- that there are great minds and great asses out there and, in the case of ally and anthony, the two have united, thus casting Decartes' dualism into the abyss

Queen Gynocology was not my 1st preference, Saturday, 27 November 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Then you learned nothing.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I, for one, learned that I am lame, very lame, but that some people like me anyway.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

if that happened, then i learned the true meaning of ilx.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

You dont like us very much tonight.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

aw. i am in the least hateful mood ever. how could i hate the world, especially if i saw britt daniel of spoon perform earlier and then chat it up with a hot guy at an afterparty? right now im feeling easy breezy, elo-production style.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

you're not lame, kenan!!!

Slocki McDougal (jaymc), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

There's another thing I've learned -- assuming that I am lame, to a certain degree, makes me cooler.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

...Beacuse it's true! I am lame, to a certain degree! Everybody is!

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

oh. hmmmm.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Every time you do that "hmmmm" thing, I'm reminded of Rorschach in Watchmen, with his "hrmmmm." And I am frightened.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I've been doing it a lot lately, huh? I haven't read Watchmen, though.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it, though. It's so totally meaningless / open to interpretation. It's a good response to anything.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like, you're curious, but noncommittal.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 27 November 2004 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i have learned i like kenan lame.

bulbs (bulbs), Saturday, 27 November 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

take a deep breath and try that sentence again.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 27 November 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i got lost halfway.

bulbs (bulbs), Saturday, 27 November 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i meant: some of my enthusiasms had been in isolation for many years until...ilx.

bulbs (bulbs), Saturday, 27 November 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 27 November 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

not now.

bulbs (bulbs), Saturday, 27 November 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I learned Nico was a white noise supremacist and thus learned not to dig too deep into the lives of admired artists. I've learned to hew closer to untainted family fare like Prussian Blue to avoid such disappointments.
